I’m sadden to say that Whiteway has gone to that big real estate in the sky. They are closed, out of business.

I go to White Way about once every 6 months. It is a prototypical greasy spoon. Simple menu, 2 older women do everything — waitress, cook, bus, and wash dishes, and little ambiance(which is the point, I think). You go to White Way to eat, bullshit for a few minutes with the ladies and possibly the guy sitting next to you at the counter, and leave. The cheeseburgers are OK. Somewhere between a slider & a McDonald’s burger in size, these burgers are thin, onions are cooked into the patty, cheese is added($.25 extra), bun is steamed, and burger is served. Pickles are on the side. The fries are crispy & hot. Yes, they’re frozen, but they’re cooked perfectly. The food is fine, but the prices are high for what you get. 2 burgers, fries, and a 12 oz fountain coke came to $ 8(including tip). Next time I’ll order the«King Hamburger» special — not sure what it is exactly, but the special includes fries & a pop for $ 4.99. Definitely a cool place to experience at least once. The burgers are tasty & the service is quirky.

OK, OK, we’ve all heard about Bates and Gates and Greene’s on the westside but if you’re in the E. 8 mile and Van Dyke area White Way is by far the best burger you’ll find. As a matter of fact having tried those westside burger joints the White Way has them beat. I love cheeseburgers but this is the only burger where I dare not ruin it with a piece of chesse. They are that good. A handful of onions fried right into the burger and the bun steamed on the grill… oh my. The French fries are excellent and their chili ain’t half bad either.

White Way Hamburgers is a real honest to god greasy spoon, in the truest sense of the word. If you are looking for flash, stylish décor, hipster menus just keep right on driving. We found this place around 2am, just by chance. Had we blinked, we would have missed it. There is seating for a amazingly large amount of people, say 20. Most of the seats are right at the counter. Between every other stool you will find a mini jukebox from the mid 60’s. Tempting fate we tried a double cheese burger and onion rings. What we saw next shocked both me and my friend. The waitress, who was also the cook, brought out fresh ground hamburger and formed the patties right in front of us. Everything she put on the burgers was fresh cut right in front of us. When we got our burgers we were not disappointed. They were the best burgers we had ever had… period! The onion rings were great as well, but the memory of those burgers… We gotta get back there soon! Inside looking around the place, 2.5 out of 5. The food 5 out of 5.
