A whole lot of pumpkins For the last 13 years or so the small town of Warren, Rhode Island has been featuring the Giant Pumpkin Weight Off. All the giant pumpkin growers in the land get together on Columbus Day Weekend to compete and find out who has the prettiest, ugliest, cutest and of course largest pumpkins. Unfortunately this has been a very bad year for giant pumpkin growers. All of the rain and extreme heat conspired to make things so difficult that the largest pumpkins in this year’s contest were barely over 1,000 pounds. Far off from some of the previous records. Still the event was well attended as usual and offered all kinds of pumpkin games, advice, information and just plain big ‘ol pumpkin fun. Lots of food was available as well as local art, crafts, rides, games for the kids, lovely flowers, gifts and of course a whole lot of pumpkins. This year might have been a bit of a disappointment as far as the very largest pumpkins were concerned but still just being around all those pleasantly insane pumpkin fanatics was fun. And even a disappointing half ton pumpkin is still pretty impressive.
