If you’re looking for exotic meats, Butcher Boy is the place for you. In fact, other than a couple of items, you won’t find a scintilla of «normal» meats(beef, chicken, pork) anywhere on the premises. Buffalo is the primary beast of choice, and pretty much every cut of buffalo imaginable is there. Besides the old standby ground buffalo, there are also lots of steaks, roasts, buffalo prime rib, buffalo ribs, stew meat, sausage. You name it, they got it. And if they don’t have it at that precise moment, they’ll get it for you. Buffalo tongue? Liver? No prob. I haven’t gotten around to it yet, but the buffalo bacon and sausage are on my «to try» list. The steaks they have on hand tend to be cut a little thin for me – probably ½ inch or so. Thankfully, you can place orders for any cut of steak you want. I did so, and my 1.5 inch buffalo rib-eyes were frickin’ fantastic, and cost a fraction of what it would have cost in a steakhouse that served comparable steaks. Seriously, I’m salivating just thinking about it. But don’t stop at buffalo, dear friends. You can get all sorts of other meats — venison, elk, caribou, antelope, wild boar, rattlesnake, ostrich, turtle, rabbit, camel. I’ve tried the kangaroo steaks. They are tasty but ridiculously lean. Don’t overcook those babies. Pretty much everything is vacuum sealed and frozen. Don’t let that deter you. The quality is consistently good. For those of you interested in peameal bacon(it’s a Canadian thing) Butcher Boy makes their own. And it’s really REALLY good. If you’re a hunter, they also process meats and do taxidermy. My hunting is pretty much limited to their freezer cases, and I love the adventure of trying different meats!

I am really torn about this place. I want to give them the highest praise possible and shout them from the mountain tops, but I just can’t. While they offer a great selection of various game and exotic meats including Buffalo(which is why I go here) I am just not overly impressed with some of the quality or the service provided by the staff. Let’s break it down for you old school with some PROS and CONS shall we? PROS –They are super close to me and open on Saturdays. –Their Ground Buffalo is about $ 3.00 less per pound than any of the Grocery Stores that actually carry it. –The rest of their products are also priced decently. –When it comes to Buffalo they come from locally sourced farms where they are grass fed from birth to butcher which means the meat itself is super lean. –They always seem to mail out coupons and have pretty decent specials. CONS –While they accept credit cards they charge $ 1.40 to process them which is actually against their merchant agreement. If they were a large chain, I’d say something, but as they are a Mom and Pop shop I just bite my tongue. –The way they cut some of their steaks baffles me. I am not a butcher, but shouldn’t a steak be flat and have the same thickness throughout? I wanted to get a couple of N.Y. Strips and they all tapered off and looked like a triangle wedge you’d use to prop open a door. How are they going to cook evenly like that? –While the staff comes off initially friendly they can be a bit rude sometimes. For example, I went in to purchase their Buffalo Sample package they had on special and wanted to sub out the Rib Eyes that came with it for Ground Buffalo as we weren’t a huge fan of the Rib Eyes when we purchased them a few weeks prior. She looked at me like I just insulted her and firmly told me no. –When it comes to those types of packages they will not allow you to pick out which steaks you want. I asked and she just blazed past me to the coolers and grabbed the first ones in sight. I wasn’t fond of this because the steaks they picked for me didn’t look all that great. If I am paying for something I should have some form of say in what I am getting. Just my two cents there. With that all being said I think that from here on out I will just purchase Ground Buffalo from there and stick to online vendors for all other cuts I may want unless they have a deal that is just too good to pass up.

Butcher Boy is a non-traditional butcher. They specialize in healthy game meats such as bison, venison, wild boar and elk. They go on to have rabbit, turtle, python, kangaroo, etc. You’re not going to find cold cuts and potato salad here. This is the parent store to Country Smoke House in Imlay City. The same family owns both stores and the son runs Old Country Smokehouse. Outdoorsmen know both stores to be sponsors of Michigan Out of Doors TV and the various Michigan-based sportsman shows and magazines. You can purchase items by the cut ie. filets, steaks, etc. or opt for next step processing such as sausage, hot dogs and salamis. Further, you can order whole sides of bison and save a little money while stocking a freezer. Butcher Boy also has game processing and taxidermy services on-site. I go back for the high quality product and the friendly service. These people are honest and treat you like family.

I really thought we were going to someone’s house when we turned down their street but fear not, I spotted a giant cow on the roof of their building and felt better. When you walk in it’s just a small room of full of freezers. Freezers full of exotic meat that is. Buffalo, elk, kangaroo, venison, etc. We opted for two buffalo ribeyes and forgot cash. Dang, that was an extra charge! It was still worth it, our steaks were delicious. It’s worth a stop by here for something a little different. I want to go back and stock up on ground buffalo.

Three coolers stocked full of frozen exotic meats. That’s all this place has and that’s all there needs to be. From more traditional venison, buffalo meat and cuts of pork to rare offerings of python and kangaroo meat, Butcher Boy has everything. The only drawback is that the meats aren’t offered in enough proportions. Buffalo hot dogs and sausages are only sold per pound for instance, and I don’t feel quite like spending $ 12.50 or more on eight casings. Butcher Boy also has home made perogies, sauces and even morel mushrooms. If you want to try some new foods you should give Butcher Boy a visit. (They charge a small fee $ 1.50 or so to run a credit card so bring cash to save money).

While I’ll have to admit that I’ve never actually purchased any meat from Butcher Boy, any reputable meat market will tell you to seek them out if you’re looking for exotic game meats. I came here over the summer to investigate and was pleased to find such a menagerie of meats for sale from bear to antelope to rabbit. You’ll have to find the store first as it’s kind of tucked back on a side street of Warren off Schoenherr Road(there are some faded signs on the corner at Herbert). Once you do, make your way into the very small storefront and someone will materialize to help you. I’d suggest picking up a menu previous to your feast of roast beast so you can rest assured that they’ll have what you want when you need it. They seemed to have a generous assortment of frozen fresh wild game and I got the impression that they can special order or alert you when specific game is coming in. If you’re looking for exotic protein this is the only place I know of that fits the bill.
