Scott Kupetz, DMD

Let me preface this review with the statement… This is not a negative review toward Dr. Kupetz or his wonderful Dental Assistant, Marie. This is about the first person you meet and my entire review is based on the office manager Dawn.
I telephoned the office in Wappinger Falls in extreme pain. When I say pain, I was crying. I found the office after searching for pain-​free (sedation) dentistry, as I knew this tooth was going to have to come out. I spoke with Dawn (lovely) who assured me that she could get me in to see Dr. Kupetz in his Pawling office, in a week (eeeek but okay) and he would fix my problem with sedation. A few days before the appointment, Marie (Dental Assistant) telephoned me, as she heard that I was terrified. When I say terrified, I am not saying this with drama, I am saying this with truth. I am terrified. Marie apologized and said, Dr. Kupetz would not be able to take care of the tooth at this visit. FIRST: The Pawling office does not do sedation and that would have to be done in Wappinger Falls. My heart sank. SECOND: I would need a complete exam. Okay, OKAY I totally get this.
I went to my appointment in Pawling on the 7^th of December. The office is a bit drab, but not an issue… I am not there for interior design, I am there for Dr. Kupetz. Marie brings me into the exam room and I am a mess. I tell you a MESS! Somehow this amazing woman manages to keep me calm (without drugs) and gets an entire old fashioned (not digital) X-​ray of my entire mouth done. The doctor comes in and he examines my mouth and explains the issues I have. I know, I know — my teeth are a mess. Of course that back tooth has to come out, it is loose and as he says fairly easy to remove. GREAT! But I knew that, as I have little bone and have had multiple teeth pulled. A few cavities, scaling and some antibiotic. GREAT and he can do it all under sedation and in one day. Okay Okay — This is sounding great. I have my Carecredit Card and Insurance (AFHS) which they are members of. It shouldn’t be so bad.
Dawn, the trusted Office Managers brings me into the exam room to go over the bill. Shall we go over this:
WITHOUT INSURANCE: $ 7,870.00
WITH INSURANCE: $ 5,412.00
Woahhhh — I looked at my wife and said… We are out of here. I have years of experience with Dentist and Dental Surgery. I knew this was a total scam.
FIRST RULE: When being presented with a Dental Plan — Make sure the codes are included in the dental plan. I mean, how else are they going to quote you prices?
When I asked her for the Dental Codes, she said she didn’t need them, that she checked and the majority of them were not listed, so she gave me 25% off.
Excuse me? White fillings and desensitizer does not have a code? Excuse me, extraction (simple) even at the worst does not have a code?
Let’s talk about the fees with Insurance.
White Fillings — $ 285
Desensitizer — $ 87
That is a grand total of $ 372 with insurance for a cavity — times that by 3 and we are at $ 1000.
Surgical Extraction: $ 672 with Insurance. This is a loose tooth in the back of my mouth. When I asked for the insurance code, she looked at me like a deer in headlights. No insurance code for this people. I generally use Aspen Dental in Newburgh (Love Them) and they have charged with my insurance $ 60 — but that is without sedation and I have had a few tough teeth to remove.
There are a number of other questionable charges and I am not challenging the $ 895 brought down to $ 672 sedation fee (even though I asked if I was eligible for their $ 400 first time coupon).
There was a charge for an Occlusal Adjustment in the upper, which pretty much means — my teeth have to be filed down. I have no upper back teeth and the ones in the front (except for one on each side) are a permanent bridge. HELLO.
Of course, when I feel like I am being taken advantage of — I go to the top and check things out. I telephoned the American Dental Association and spoke to a person in the ethics department (I think that’s the department) — I went over my exam with them and the treatment plan and fees, including the insurance and she encouraged me to file a report against the office. In fact, she pushed me for the name, but I did not give it. I don’t want to hurt Dr. Kupetz or Marie. That was not my goal — My goal was to find out if I was being ripped off and surely I was. I am going to make the assumption, Dr. Kupetz is totally in the dark about Dawn. That he has no idea that his first line of defense is crooked. I am also hoping he reads this review, as I am not confident sending him a private letter would even reach him.
I asked for copies of my X-​Rays the day of my exam and 2 ½ weeks later they arrived. This has prevented me from going to another Dentist, unless of course I wanted to endure another 45 minutes having X-​rays in my already painful mouth.

Scott Kupetz, DMD is a convenient dental office especially for appointments. The office and work area is definitely comfortable and very high tech. They have televisions and a wonderful view of the observatory. The staff members are nice and welcoming. What makes this place different from the other dental places I’ve been to are the employees, safe handling procedures, and appointments. Definitely recommend!

Every time I come to this dentist I wait but they are a clean and friendly dentist. I keep coming back because of the staff. I wish they would run on time but they’re worth it.
