Sunday’s were made for Wheatley’s fried chicken dinner and a slice of homemade carrot cake. And maybe a slice of peanut butter brownie pie to go.

They would have got 5 stars if they were open more often. This little gem in Wanamaker is always on our route to my mothers. We finally decided to stop in after admiring it for a long time. I am a huge fan of biscuits and gravy so when I had to drive by their taunting sign time after time, I knew we had to try it out. Food does NOT disappoint. Only sad thing is that they are only open on the weekends. Here we are, it’s Sunday brunch and the place is empty.

Their biscuits and gravy are delicious. A half a serving is so filling. The hash browns are ok. A little soggy and they stick together. They’d be better if they were cooked a little longer and a little more crunchy. But, that may just be my personal preference. Their fish is very good, but a bit pricey. I’ve been wanting to try their fried chicken, but their limited operating hours has prevented that a couple times. The people are super friendly. Just what you’d expect from a small town Indiana restaurant.

Wheatley’s. The old standby in Wanamaker. Biscuits and gravy always sound good on Saturday morning after a long night. Country cooking and small town pleasantries are abundant. The fried chicken on Sundays is always juicy and never dry. I’m on the hook to try the hand breaded tenderloin. Wonder how it’ll compare to the rest of Indiana?

This place is special little resteraunt in downtown Wanamaker. They advertise that they are only open on the weekends with Friday being the fish fry, which brings a special crowd wanting for more. The menu is simple: battered fried fish, with an assortment of side dishes like baked beans, fries, and cole slaw. They make their own tartar sauce which is very good. Another great thing about this place is the open air seating and the live music which ranges from classic to contemporary rock and i would assume that its different local artists every weekend but the when i was there the band was pretty good. Definitely check this place out if your looking for a nice casual dinner setting for a friday night!

On Wednesdays Mr Wheatley serves up BBQ pork or beef with sides of macaroni and cheese and baked beans. These delicious and smoky sandwiches include a pickle and always hit the spot. On Fridays in the summer only, fried fish is on the menu with fries on the side. I’m not sure if it’s all still just what Mr Wheatley has caught but when it started out it was. You can get the fried fish as pieces or in a sandwich. On Saturday mornings it’s Biscuits and Gravy! Once a grocery store, Mr Wheatley has renovated his establishment to accommodate for diners inside and out. On the warm summer nights, it just doesn’t get any better than seeing everyone from the community having dinner with Mr. Wheatley dishing out the grub and a local band jamming under the gazebo decorated with twinkly lights.
