Awesome food, friendly staff, and reasonably priced. My favorite is the beef + broccoli and won ton soup. The food has flavor, but is not overly salty or over-seasoned. I highly recommend for dine-in or take-out.

I’m so sorry about this. I really don’t like giving bad reviews but I’m afraid there’s not much I can say in favor of this place. When I walked in the door, my first thought was that I was glad I wasn’t dining in. They obviously do mostly takeout because they were very busy but no one was dining in. They must count on this because I didn’t see any waitresses and the place was very dirty and the tables seemed to be just thrown in the place with no apparent design. In the short amount of time I was there, about 10 minutes, I watched about six people come in and get their takeout orders. The gentleman that helped me, even though he looked frantic with all of the running he was doing, was very nice and the prices were cheap. Well, that’s it for the good points. I think my husband and I agreed that it was the absolute worst Chinese food experience we have ever had. If it weren’t the only thing we had in the house, we probably wouldn’t have eaten it. But we suffered through it. I ordered the chicken Kung pow and the garlic shrimp. Both of the sauces tasted exactly alike… Gross! The rice seemed like overcooked minute rice and the egg rolls were mushy and tasteless. They gave a lot of food for the money, including some giant dinner rolls which would’ve been good except they put them into a plastic bag so they were all sweaty and chewy by the time I got home. I feel badly because a friend recommended it to me, but I will never be back! Gross!

I love the Hunan chicken! The place is a little outdated, but the food is good.

Boon Kai has been a cornerstone of the Walled Lake community for years. At it’s peak, it was never great but really good. Ownership has changed hands over the years and it has noticeably dwindled into the just OK category. Menu is going to very familiar. Choose beef, chicken or shrimp; add vegetables and pick a colored sauce. Very American. While accepting it for what it is, the Sweet and Sour Pork was pretty good, just ask for sauce on the side as the generous ladle of it was overwhelming and the fried rice was much to be desired. No real specialties here, however, they do serve the not oft seen Silver Noodles here. Service is fast and friendly. What can I say: it ain’t great but it ain’t bad either.

Im visiting from Ilinois, was directed here by my aunt. The resturant is fairly small & out dated. Only 2 people seated at 5 on a tuesday. The Crab Rangoon is bittersweet in that it was good but theyre small. Ordered the General Tso chicken(when you order you are able to ask for«heavy seasoning/heat» which i asked for) and even when it was soaked in a pool of sauce, it was still really bland and the chicken itself was crunchy but very thin«discs» of meat, almost looking like a perogi. The sweet and sour shrimp was your cliché thick/heavy sweet red sauce, but the issue i have is when we ordered a quart/large we were given the pint/regular and charged for the smaller one, a simple mistake but i question how often they get away with it. Upgrading your white rice to plain fried is an additional 2 dollars not well spent. Also ordered a pint of the Hot and Sour soup, its a meal in itself for one, but flavor was mediocre. Its low end chinese food. Is what it is.

We’ve been on the hunt for really good Chinese food for a loooooong time now and Boon Kai just didn’t do it for us. Don’t get me wrong, my husband and I both enjoyed our meals, but there wasn’t really anything about either that would make me want to hurry back. We had the sesame and general tso’s chicken combos. For about $ 6 per dish, each meal came with the chicken, fried rice, egg roll and a bread roll. The chicken was noticeably fresh, which is a huge plus. However, outside of that I couldn’t help just kind of shrug my shoulders and give it a «meh» overall. I was also found it interesting that there wasn’t a single piece of vegetable in anything. Like not even a tiny shred of green onion or sliver of carrot in the fried rice. Maybe my expectations were skewed but for now, we’ll let the hunt continue…

So here’s the thing with Boon Kai, it is not a classy place. But, it’s not trying to be. Yes, the places lacks in décor and may look a little sketchy but, it does have as I like to call it the best«cheap Chinese» around! Everything is fresh and tastes great. The service is always friendly, too. Never had a bad meal there and I am super pickey when it comes to Chinese food. I am a BIG fan of the sweet Chinese dinner rolls they give you with your meal :)

Once upon a time was the best place for Chinese food! I have been going here since I was a child a very young child! I am 26 now and it has changed! I grew up eating here whenever we where in town! Recently for my 26th b-day on march 8 I had my mother order food from there enough to feed 15 people! egg rolls sweet rolls shrimp chow mein and orange chicken picked it up at 6pm! Was average! The next day when I went to heat a egg roll up little bugs crawled out of the egg roll! like little cock roaches! I will never eat there again! When I called to speak to a manager whoever I spoke with wouldn’t let me talk to a manager ! He also laughed and told me I was pranking them ! Real PROFESSIONAL! Don’t waste your time!

One of the best in the whole Detroit area. Great hot and sour soup. And sweet rolls. Most take home food from here because they give you a lot of food. Nice mix to the menu with something for everyone. Nothing fancy, just great food at a fair price.

After seeing all of the high star ratings, I gave Boon Kai another try. Sadly, despite my four year hiatus from this place, the food tastes the same as the last time I decided to quit going there. Slightly below average, they still are planted in the mid-70s style of serving American Chinese(dinner roll and all). Anybody that would drive more than two minutes to this place is driving too far.

This is the only place I’ll eat Chinese food in Michigan. The food is delicious and clearly made with quality ingredients, and the portions are really large/inexpensive. I don’t get to eat here often, as I live 45 minutes away, but I make the trip every time I’m craving this type of cuisine. Highly recommended.

I went here for the first time when my friend recommended it. We sat down and there was a fingernail on the table… We still decided to stay… They give you rolls which are hot and sweet(very tasty), crackers + sauce to dip them in. The food came and it was amazing. The Chicken was very very good. Prices are very reasonable(Combos + dinners are $ 9). Although on our last visit, I ordered beef and it looked dried out and was very chewy(not good!) Also, the table was sticky, the bottles of the red-ish sauce they gave us and the hot mustard they gave us for the crackers were both completely empty(ANDSTICKY!!), and the rolls were not fresh. Maybe it was just a bad day for them… I will stick to ordering chicken when I go there next time. I would still recommend.

One of the best Chinese places by far. The staff is always awesome and friendly. My family has been going here since I was little. The sauces and flavors are unique and bold, above average from most Asian restaurants. The only downfall that I can see is the cleanliness and upkeep of the actual resturaunt itself. Needs some work… Delicious food though …

OMG! Look at that dirty kitchen door! Was my mom’s first words as we enter the Boon Kai restaurant. And still, we decided to stay. Sticky table tops and crooked chairs did not scared us, after all, we are Russians, we know the worst places to be. Hot and Sour soup is the work of culinary art, Boon Kai chef should patent the recipe. Almond chicken is tasty and always fresh. I write ALWAYS because despite all the negatives we become regulars at this ‘hole in the wall’. Waitresses are very sweet. It took only two visits to the restaurant for them to remember that I don’t like a green pepper in my Kon Pow beef. Food is the star at this restaurant and you know sometimes stars have to perform in the horrible venues. I do think they should hire a good cleaning company. LOL In conclusion: if you have a craving for cheap delicious Chinese Food, Boon Kai is the place. I love it.

The food is better then most Chinese restaurants in the area but this place is definitely the filthiest place in town. the waitress«oh by the way was very rude» give us a bottle of sweet and sour sauce that was so dirty we didn’t even want it on the table nevermind use it. I can’t believe this place gets good reviews it’s terrible… NEVERAGAIN!

LOVEIT! I’ve been coming here since I was seven years old, the food is so good! The atmosphere is quiet and nice, the staff is sweet. Everything on the menu I’ve ever gotten is good! But sometimes they will screw up the take out orders!

This was my absolute favorite chinese restaurant in the area when I lived in Walled Lake. I used to order General Tsao or Sechzuan Chicken until I tried the Gum Lo Wonton. I’ve never seen it on any other restaurants menu but once I had it, I never ordered other meal off their menu, it’s THAT good. Chicken, Pork, Beef and Shrimp with all kinds of vegetables and wontons in an amazing sauce served with white rice.

BOONKAI is the best chinese restaurant in michigan! its a little precious gem hiding in the city of walled lake. the hot & sour soup is medicine! gum lo wonton is my favorite~ i always ask for extra wontons! boonkai special, sweet & sour beef & chicken is a must!!! i love the fact that they use real chicken breast for their chicken meat and not some reconstituted bleach chicken like the hole in the wall chinese restaurants in the hood. oh and their home made buns! i love the smell of it! always pack up a dozen before i go home. the price is very reasonable and the portion is more than enough! i live about a good hour away but it is always worth the drive!!!
