TJ’s Warehouse Outlet

Originally, I came to TJ’s to pick up some bentos (lunchboxes) for the plane trip home, but the selection is quite vast so my party of 4 picked up a few other items, as well. Being that the store is close to the airport, it’s an ideal stop before or after arriving at OGG. Here’s what we ate:
Misoyaki Butterfish Bento $ 8.25 — I couldn’t leave the island and not have their wonderful fish
Korean Chicken Bento $ 5.95 — If you like Korean Fried Chicken, this is the bento to get
Meat Jun Bento $ 5.50 — A classic Korean dish that my companion likes
Mini Spam Musubi Bento $ 5.95 — Hawaiian Grinds at its best
Kim Chee Tako Poke $ 10.99/lb — the octopus was tender, but the kim chee flavor was just ok
Mochiko Chicken $ 2/​serving — this was the crowd favorite
Mochi Malasadas 85¢ each — these are fun if you like fried mochi (rice cake)
With limited carry-​on luggage, you can only buy so much, but there was so much more to buy. In addition to being a Japanese market, there were fresh salads, different kinds of poke, plate lunches, and Hawaiian desserts to be had. Additional items that were begging to be purchased was a bag of Sriracha Popcorn $ 6.42 and a Japanese bath cloth $ 3.29 which are great for scrubbing your back.
Next time, I’ll make TJ’s a stop AFTER I get off the plane.

Had lunch here the other day. Made a plate with rice, mac salad, garlic chicken, mochiko chicken, & shrimp tempura. Liked it all! But my least fav was the mochiko chicken, it was too dry. A little pricey but lots of food.

This place is great. Good fresh cooked food at reasonable prices. Lots of selection, friendly atmosphere.

Awesome food and clean area and the workers are so nice and I love the variety of choices you can pick from.

I think the best bento on the island. we pick up several a couple times a week when we don’t feel like cooking. Everything is tasty. Worth going a little out of your way.
I also like to walk around the store to see what kind of things they have. Lots of stuff from Japan that you can’t get anywhere else on the island.

The Butterfish Bento is one of my favorite but they do sell out pretty quick esp. lunch time so you gotta get your okole there early =)
I am bummed that they are not selling the japanese candy maker (sushi, cake, etc.) anymore. I asked one of the workers and they said it has something to do with the shipping it over.
This place is like Shirokiya =)

Reminds us of Shirokiya bentos from years ago. Nice selection of bentos and asian food, snacks, ingredients. Hard to access if you have bad knees or some kind of mobility impairment… there is a ramp but it’s quite steep. A lift or elevator would be wonderful.

After a delayed inter-​island flight, we headed to TJ’s for what turned out to be half-​priced bentos (after 1:30pm). The market is like a mini 99 Ranch, so we loaded up on dry snacks as well. The bentos were solid, and we were even happier with the poke we went back for a couple days later, a total steal at BOGO 50%.
TJ’s is a great grab-​and-​go option when you’re heading to the beach or somewhere remote, though you need to be used to eating mostly fried items that soften/​sog a bit.

Excellent stop for sundries and local favorited bentos and sashimi poké. Best prices too.

gotta love the location of TJ’s especially when you are totally unfamiliar with the area. the bentos have a nice variety and have to agree that the chicken katsu is one of their better options. found the teriyaki beef closer to beef jerky and the korean chicken gave me no hints of anything korean. the steam table had decent garlic chicken. prices are definitely reasonable. TJ’s also has other food products for sale.

Great place to get some bentos whether on the run or making it a day at the beach in the morning.
all different varieties for everyones palate from fish, chicken, beef, shrimp and musubi of course along with a hot bar.
Only thing is I wish they were open a little earlier then 730 for the people like myself making morning fishing run!

Your expectations should not be determined by the «warehouse» in the name. Focus on the delicious bentos (go earlier rather than later for best choice folks!) Simple and tasty. We really enjoyed our inarizushi with korean chicken and teri beef — super filling and hit the spot.
Meanwhile they have most everything to meet your Japanese eating needs. Good selection of tsukemono. Also some handy restaurant supplies and Japanese miscellaney.

This place is tourist trap! The bentos are NOT exactly as shown on their web site. The portion is WAY smaller than what’s shown on the web site. The chicken is hard like rock, meaning old foods!
Do NOT even bother to go to this place! What a disappointment for us driving from Kihei to the place and witnessed bad food!

UGH I’m SO DISAPPOINTED with TJ’S…I initially had a «5 star» review for this place — but after my last 2 visits, I will unfortunately stop coming here.
An Asian man at the buffet area served me and the portions were SO SMALL!!! The quality of the Nishime also got bad. (it used to be full of chicken, mushrooms, etc) SO SAD! The size of the vegetable tempura also has been down sized big time.
The thing is now this place has gotten popular, the portions/​quality has decreased — I’m truly disappointed as I used to frequent this place a lot!
For Asian grocery items, they still are well stocked — but for the fresh food — SKIP!
Yes, central Maui is very limited when it comes to local bentos — I suggest driving up to upper Wailuku and going to ICHIBAN OKAZUYA! Cheap and they give PLENTY!!!

Maui’s version of Marukai! A bit smaller, though.
Since they’ve been doing retail, they’ve gone through a lot of changes, including rearranging the aisles and condensing items. They’ve gotten rid of their Hello Kitty aisles and seem to be concentrating more on their hot foods.
If there’s something Japanese you like, I.e. takuwan or aburage, they got it. A large selection of sauces and canned and boxed foods to help with your cooking. They also sell restaurant/​catering supplies like plate lunch boxes and plastic silverware. Prices pretty competitive too. I know they have a lot of products other retailers on Maui don’t have and they’re usually not as crowded due to their location.
If you need a fast freshly made meal, they sell bentos and have a hot line where you can purchase other hot foods, including fried chicken. Parking is pretty easy to find and their hours are normal business hours, plus they open 7 days a week.

TJ’s warehouse is located outside of Maui Chemical and Paper in the Wailuku Industrial Park. The store sells local and Asian products, some groceries, tons of Hello Kitty stuff, a seafood/​poke bar, and BENTOS. If Long’s Drug Store and Shirokiya had a small baby, TJ’s would be it!
There’s a huge variety of bentos, delicious in flavor, lots of stock, and most importantly, the price is right! Mini bentos go as cheap as $ 3 while «combo» styles and bentos containing more expensive items are around the $ 10 range, or a couple dollars more. Most bentos usually come with a main dish and 1 – 4 different «sides» (tsukemono type stuff). If you come around lunch time you’ll see lots of people flocking around the bento heaters, eyeing the tasty treats. Luckily, with its huge stock, you won’t feel too much remorse when someone inevitably picks up the exact bento you wanted (because there’s lots more where that one came from!).
Perfect grab-​and-​go bento for a meal or snack, to soothe your hunger pains at the beach or on the airplane, wherever life may take you!

This was excellent. I had plate lunch with chow fun (wide noodles, bacon, ham, some kind of sprouty bean) Yakatori chicken, a «fish stick» (a little on the cool side for me) and «brown rice».
The brown rice was more hapo rice (brown/​white mix) where three of the grandparents were white — not much in the way of brown.
But, for $ 6.40 it was a pretty darn impressive meal. Take out only, and if you want one of the bento boxes you need to get there at 10:30 (or soon thereafter) if you want the best selection.
Good stuff. Intending to go back to peruse the store.

For some reason, the name «TJ’s» seems to be very popular on the rock. There’s a Filipino version, but this one is Japanese.
LOCATION:
Inside of the Maui Chemical & Paper warehouse, west side of Alua Street in the Wailuku Industrial Park.
ATMOSPHERE:
It’s sort of Maui’s attempt of Shirokiya in Ala Moana Center, but minus the mind-​boggling Yataimura food court and beer garden. They feature an okazuya takeout counter, hot bento display, refrigerated and dry Japanese groceries, as well as restaurant supplies. There’s a small, tarp-​covered outdoor eating area.
FOOD:
Chicken Katsu Donburi — Rice bowl topped with scrambled eggs, onions and chicken katsu. I didn’t need one drop of soy sauce. Tons of flavor.
Korean Chicken — Deep fried breaded pieces of Korean-​flavored chicken, a bit sweet but not overly. Because it’s packed into a bento box while hot, it sweats and therefore has a soggy crust. Oh well, it’s perfect beach food. Comes with rice, a small deep fried fishcake croquette and pickled cucumbers. Great price and good portion size.
Yakitori Chicken — This is my favorite bento here. Grilled chicken thighs in a teriyaki sauce, which the website touts as the original Shirokiya recipe. Simply delicious, good portion size and great price. Comes with rice, pickled cucumbers and a fishcake croquette.
GROCERIES:
Amongst my favorites are the Kagome brand katsu sauce in a variety of flavors, a wide variety of packaged ramen/​saimin, pickled cucumbers, and Calbee brand chips.
TIP:
They’re now open 7-​days a week!
OVERALL:
Very good selection of Japanese foods & groceries at great prices.

Like MaryFran L, we heard about TJ’s from the SF Chronicle and made this a must. Food has been described by other reviewers so I’ll add my 2 cents regarding the groceries. I found lots of food omiyage to be cheaper at TJ’s Warehouse like Hawaiian jams and jellies, coffee beans, and Maui cookies by $ 1 to $ 2 versus roadside stands and the like. We bought almost all our friends and family food items from TJ’s so the savings added up.
I could have poked around forever because it is such an adventure to roam their aisles but I was on a strict schedule. The little one needed a nap but she was all about loading coffee and cookies into her basket too. She got a kick out of the Japanese zori over near the veggies and would have a pair if they weren’t several sizes too large for her. Luckily she didn’t discover the sizeable Hello Kitty section!
