West Oahu SUP & Surf

It’s a scam.
I signed up myself, my husband, and mother for the Turtle Tour.
Per instructions, we were supposed to meet 8:15 the morning of. At 7:30 (as we were about to leave) I was called and told that there was a large swell and we would have to cancel and try to reschedule. I was offered a surf class instead but I wasn’t interested in surfing, my husband wasn’t interested, and my mother is 68 with a knee replacement so I opted to reschedule. I was told I would be called the next day.
I hadn’t heard anything by late afternoon the following day so I called and of course was told that they were «just about to call me.» I was told the swell was still too large and we would have to cancel entirely. I was told I would receive a partial refund.
I never received any refund. They have $ 428.46 of my money for nothing.
Again, it’s a scam.

I was hoping to give this place a full five stars but my experience had a glitch or two.
We found this place while eating at countryside café and I saw that it was highly rated for great service and a wide array of offerings.
My husband and I found Makaha beach the day before and wanted to snorkel and West Oahu SUP was the only place around.
We drove by close to 8:30 and the place was closed. I called to ask when they open and the person who answered said «uh we will open AROUND 9:30» so assuming around meant 9:35 or 9:45 we went to their location around 9:50 they weren’t open so I waited until 10:10 and called again the guy I spoke to said oh I had to pick some equipment up and he was about 10 to 15 mins away.
30 mins later I get a call from this same phone number saying they were on the way and it would be about another 10 mins.
We drove around for about 10 mins and noticed the back gate was open. We parked on the back and went in even before the lights were on because we were anxious to get out there.
We received apologies for the wait but it appears that both people who work at this location went to pick up whatever equipment so no one opened the store.
We get people make mistakes but it sure took them a long time to figure it out.
Once we were able to get the equipment the person who helped (from Santa Monica CA) was very helpful and nice.
I really wanted to give a 5 star rating but this experience came up a little short.
I realize it the off season but I would think making some money is better than nooney at all.

I found West Oahu SUP on youtube, and when I found out they were 11 miles away from our resort at Ko Olina, score! If we were staying in Waikiki, I’d still make the drive to Waianae. It’s worth it.
Thanks to the WOSUP Ohana, Roger, Jason, Junior, Danny… you guys really made my kids feel comfortable out there in the lineup, you taught them how to love the sport of surfing, and made a ton of memories we’ll never forget.
Tip: Get the gopro camera option for the boards and bring a laptop so you could easily copy the footage.

Good Times with West Oahu SUP! We had 8 – 10 students in our surfing class two days ago, and almost every one of us were catching waves from the start. Great instructors, good equipment, and good times.

I wasn’t sure we would be able to get a lesson on such short notice but I called at 11 and they were able to give us a lesson at 12:30! Woohoo! We have 4 kids ranging from 9 – 16. They tandemed surfed with our two youngest kids. We all got up and we all had a blast. The guys teaching us (forgive me I am terrible w names) were awesome! They were so encouraging, kind, and had great instruction! They were 5 of us and 4 of them so I always felt safe. I would highly highly recommend these guys! We had a blast and couldn’t have without there awesomeness! Thank you!

From the van ride in we were treated to «Real Hawaii» the hotel instructors were real jerks… it was a job. Here, you are taught by surfers that truly want you to learn and fall in love with the sport. You are encouraged and helped every wave, all day.
It’s a bit off the beaten path… But this is real Hawaii. These are real surfers. This is family. These are new friends.
This is the way it should be. They don’t advertise or make a big deal… What they do, is deliver a perfect day.
I really can’t say enough kind words for them… Just trust them. They will get you riding on that first wave.

Fantastic support for my family’s first attempt at surfing. All the kids — 5 year old, 6 year old, 8 year old — were on the boards surfing. Even 68 year old grandma and grandpa rode the waves. Best of all our 6 year old with cerebral palsy enjoyed thrilling rides accompanied by an experienced surfer. If you want to enjoy surfing this is the place for you

The wonderful surfing staff at West Oahu SUP made my teen feel comfortable and confident. She can’t wait to go back next year. It was an easy drive from the Ko Olina area.

West Oahu SUP is All That! Jason and Mike took my two daughters for their first surf. The guys were so kind and positive. They truly share their joy and love for the sport. My girls said it was the best thing we did! We will definitely be back to try other sports with them. You don’t have to be athletic just ready for fun. Go! Make a memory!

My wife and our 2 sons (age 15 and 20) had a fantastic time Paddle Boarding with West Oahu SUP. We had very little experience and the wonderful instructors had us up on the board in no time. Would highly recommend!

Great experience renting from Roger at West Oahu SUP! We placed our reservation on a Friday for Sunday but decided to add another tandem kayak at the last minute and Roger was more than accommodating, even dropping off the 3 kayaks we had at Pokai Bay for us and saving us half a day’s rental on the additional kayak because we had to wait a little that morning at pick up. Way more than I could have expected!
Makaha is poorly served on many fronts but Roger is greatly contributing to taking the area upwards.
Smooth transaction, friendly and very helpful customer service and staff, top-​notch and clean equipment complemented our day out on the water swimming near dolphins. This was such a beautiful experience, we want to make a habit of it and decided to purchase a kayak through them when we returned later that day.
We had been on the market for one for a bit but Roger made it even easier than expected. We spent as much as we would have without his assistance by buying used gear (Craigslisters are delusional!) for something the whole family and friends can enjoy every weekend.
We’re planning to take surfing lessons from them as well now that I’ve read some of the other reviews.

Jeremy, Brandon, and Roger ROCK! Got a groupon for SUP for my girlfriend and I and had the best time. These guys are really cool and were super patient with us. Rough start at first for me (My girlfriend was a natural though), but even still we were we’re standing up on our boards in no time. Definitely a MUST DO if you’re in Hawaii!

I found Roger and West Oahu SUP on Unilocal while my family and I were staying at a nearby resort. I was looking for a «dolphin tour» and based on the reviews I gave Roger a call and booked right over the phone. We showed up the next morning to find that the wind had picked up and Roger thought it would be too choppy for my 8 year old. He said he’d keep in touch for a possible afternoon tour and when that didn’t work out due to conditions he went out early the next morning to check the water himself. He called me the next morning to let me know it was just about the same as the day before. The next morning a huge swell came in so that wasn’t going to work for the dolphin tour. He offered surf lessons for my son in the afternoon but we already had something booked.
We were leaving the next day so we never ended up getting the tour. My 5 stars are based on the fact that Roger and his staff were super friendly, very accommodating and especially the fact that Roger made the decision NOT to take us out just to get the tour booked when he knew it wasn’t ideal conditions for my kids.
That meant a lot and when we go back later this year there is no question I’ll be calling Roger and the staff at West Oahu SUP for that tour.
Oh yeah, and he processed the refund no questions asked even in the midst of moving his office and all his computers!

These guys should get six stars for such great customer service. When we walked in, the ladies at the front told us to speak with Jason in the back and that’s when our day went from good to GREAT! Jason was over the moon to have us asking about surf lessons. Let’s just say my wife and I are in our early 40s and we aren’t exactly svelte mainlanders, ok? We told Jason there was no guarantee that we were going to have the physical ability to get up on a board and ride a wave but he laughed and he promised we would. He was seriously excited to teach people surfing and that made us feel excited. He got us into some rashguards and we loaded up some boards into their pick-​up truck and we drove, not far, to a secluded little beach where the waves were juuuuuuust right. He showed us what to look at out in the water — pointed to where we should paddle and what to avoid — told us how to lay on the board and how to stand and 15 minutes later we were out on the water. I got up and rode my first wave — I kid you not. And then my wife got up and rode her first wave! Jason got us onto probably 15 waves each of which I think our ratio of rides to wipeouts was 2:3 (not bad for some tubby Chicagoans, eh?) I don’t even know how long we were out for — maybe like 2 hours? Out on the water, Jason told us about growing up in Wainanae and talked about the Mount Ka’ala and told us about the healing powers of the Hawaiian waters — just a totally chilled out vibe. And every few minutes he would say «ok, here’s a good one — paddle! paddle! paddle! get up!» and after each ride, we would paddle back and he would great us with a smile and a high five. Seriously — this probably ranks as one of the top 10 experiences *of*my*life* — I just wish I’d done surfing two decades ago. If you are anywhere on the Island of Oahu, it’s worth the drive to get a lesson with these guys — ask for Jason Garcia. That’s his brother, Sunny Garcia, on the big poster in the shop.

Roger at West Oahu SUP is such a great guy! He is casual and easy going and most importantly helped to make our vacation extra fun. We rented paddle boards and a two person kayak. It ended up kind of choppy and difficult to paddle — he was very generous and offered for us to come back when it calmed down to try again. His prices are very reasonable and we can’t wait to go back on our next Hawaiian vacation!

We rented 2 tandem kayaks. From beginning to end we were very pleased with their prices and their customer service.
The crew helped us load the kayaks and ensured we were good to go until they saw us out of their parking lot.
We ran into some delays in getting their kayaks back before closing time. We underestimated some strong current when we were paddling back and it really really slowed us down. We called the owner, who was very cool about it. I think he lives right down the street from the shop, so he met us there just to open and get his kayaks checked back in. He helped us unload the kayaks and was very cool about the 30 – 45 min late return and didn’t have a worry in the world about it. No late charge or anything for him having to take the time to come from home just to check us back in. I’ve been charged $ 50 for a 20 minute late kayak return before (Twogood Kayaks in Kailua) and I have to say west Oahu SUP really was cool and understanding about that. Their kindness and understanding will result in return business from me.
If you have any excursions, kayak rentals, gear purchases on the West side of Oahu, I recommend stopping in to West Oahu SUP. These guys will take care of you.

If you’re visiting Oahu and looking for an outdoor adventure, this is it!
Here’s what you need to know:
1. The guys that run the kayak tour, are awesome. They embody the Island spirit and couldn’t have been more welcoming and entertaining.
2. You’re going to have a great time. It’s not for the faint of heart, or those that don’t have stamina — you’re on the water for a solid hour and a half… But youll love it. You’re taken out in the middle of the ocean, and it’s you and this small group kayaking around… You’ll feel like the ocean is yours, and that’s amazing to experience.
3. Bring a waterproof camera.
4. Buy the waterproof pouch sold at the shop. (it’s $ 20, but so worth it and now you’ll have it for the rest of your vacation)
5. Dolphins are scared off by swells — so you may not see them if the water is choppy.
6. Choppy water = may get sea sick
7. The location is right across the street from the 7 eleven. It’s in a shopping center with By Submission fitness… Blink and you’ll miss.
I highly recommend this tour as a must for anyone visiting Oahu. Now that I’m back on the mainland, and talking about my vacation, I find that this is the one thing I keep telling people about.

My boyfriend and I spent a week in Honolulu and saw a deal with West Oahu SUP to take their Kayak Excursion/​Dolphin Tour and we had a wonderful experience.
The logistics of reserving were a bit of a challenge for us initially; somehow our reservation never made it into their system; however, the staff was very accommodating to make sure we were taken care of.
Also, the location of the shop is a bit difficult to find; it is situated in a strip mall across from the beach and does not have a very obvious sign, but once you do find it, you’re all set!
We were greeted warmly by our instructors, Jeremy and Brandon, who are really nice and awesome guys. They set us up with gear and gave thorough instructions for using the kayak and we set out on our way. They give you the option of either stand-​up paddle board (SUP) or kayak. We chose kayak as we wanted to do it together, but the SUPs looked fun, though they require a lot of balance.
The route was about 1.5 miles total — you travel from one point of the beach down to another point. The journey was a workout, not too terrible, but a lot of upper body strength if the waves are strong; the best part was the water was pretty empty, so it was like having the entire ocean to yourself. The views of the mountains from the ocean is stunning and picturesque. The instructors share a lot of the history of the island and are great about taking photos on your camera (waterproof of course).
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see dolphins due to the water conditions being quite strong, but that didn’t make a dent into our trip one bit. At the end of the trek, you can stay as long as you want in the ocean and kayak around or try out the stand up paddleboards. Once you’re ready to go, they drive you back to the shop and they take care of all of your gear.
I highly recommend this company, it’s a very personal and unforgettably beautiful experience.

I have to say that my experience went above and beyond what I expected. I’ve been to Oahu before and this time we decided to get away from the crowds and visit the west side… which turned out to be a great decision. My girlfriend isn’t the easiest to get into the ocean but somehow these guys were able to get her on a Stand-​up Board as well as into a Snorkel. AMAZING!!! She was radiating with confidence and it really took a lot of weight off my shoulders allowing me to really enjoy myself.
On top of all that… we were the «lucky ones», like the last guy said, that were able to encounter Dolphins. PRICELESS!
So, I want to thank the guys, especially Nick, for creating an experience for us that we’ll be talking about until the next time we go back to Oahu.

Spent the day at Cabanas Beach and rented an umbrella and two chairs from the crew. I felt like a King the whole time. They took care of everything from the minute we said go. The umbrella was set up in no time and the chairs placed just right under them. When the sun started to move our umbrella was adjusted as well and we were checked on periodically to make sure everything was ok.
While the service was attentive it remained unobtrusive, both characteristics of excellent service… and I come from a service industry background so compliments of this degree are hard pressed to give for me based on my training. Excellent job West Oahu SUP!
