Usually very flat and still waters. Good for an easy paddle. About 1.5 round trip from Haleiwa bridge to the end and back. If you want a little more action paddle out of the stream and turn RIGHT to Haleiwa beach. Do not turn left and end up in the harbor jetty. A couple SUP rental outfitters in the area. Look for uncle Bryan’s white truck. Sometimes there are turtles and tilapia. The water can get murky. Don’t fall in. The water can contain runoff from the nearby farms. Today it smelled a little like sewage at the end. I couldn’t wait to take a shower.

We rented a couple SUP boards from the shop at the end of the bridge. This seems to be one of the better places to find sea turtles. We found around 25 of them, mostly sleeping on a beach, but many active ones too. Considering how many tourists were in town at the time, this little stream seems to go mostly unnoticed. The Volcom shop doesn’t advertise the sea turtles, just SUP board and surfboard rentals. We had no idea there were going to be so many turtles until after renting the boards. Worth the minimal rental cost, not physically difficult at all, and apparently an unusually high number of sea turtles.

Anahulu Stream — great place for stand-up paddle boarding! Well, great if you’re a beginner like me. Most easily recognized as the waterway underneath the iconic Haleiwa Bridge, the mouth of Anahulu empties into Waialua Bay near the Haleiwa Boat Harbor. The stream is calm and protected for the most part by winds, though headwinds can prevail when choppy. The stream is a nice winding paddle, about 30 – 40 minutes upstream past farms. During the dry summer months, watch for limbs and debris that has been washed down lurking under the water. The water is considerably cleaner the further you make it though, and if you get as far as the second bridge you’ll be treated with sights of the winter water line — I was surprised with how high the water can make it. If you’re looking for someplace beginner friendly and want to step out of the crowded Ala Moana area, give it a shot. There’s plenty of parking at the harbor and you can rent boards at one of the nearby surf shops.
