Wine is different. Nice place to go nearby the volcano. They need to put out some cheaper appetizers as an alternative to a $ 12. And $ 16. choice. Employees are very nice.

If you like wine, have tasted wine elsewhere, or just think you want to try wine, I recommend against going here. I don’t consider myself a connoisseur or even modestly knowledgeable, but wow, I’m really not sure that was wine technically… overly sweet and all sorts of off flavors and aromas I’ve never known to be associated with grapes. I guess it’s on me though for not thinking through the impulse of tasting Hawaiian-made wine. Two stars because of the friendly and knowledgeable staff, and decent tasting room, they’re doing the best they can with what they have.

Great service, quaint tasting room, & decent prices… will be back for sure. The wine we ordered came exactly on the day we picked for shipping. Wines are a bit on the sweet, lighter side though… if full body is what you want this is not the winery. They also have teas that are grown on location as well.

Coming in from Virginia where wineries are sprouting up everywhere! We noticed on Unilocal a winery on the BI! We found the Volcano Winery on the GPS after spending the day at Green Sands and Black Sands Beach and seeing what else was around us… We found VW to be very quaint and warm with great artwork throughout and found the staff hospitable and genuine– especially **Alina!!! Who was awesome and a fellow Virginian– she truly made us feel comfortable and at home– had the Aloha spirit! My hubby and I both did the $ 8 premium tasting which included the tea infusion. I honestly found all the wines to be unique, easy to savor and not as sweet as the other Unilocalers found them. We ordered 6 wines to be delivered to us in VA! I recommend this on your BI trip plans!!!

I’m not a fancy wine drinker nor have I done a lot winery tours, but I do like an occasional glass of wine. My husband and I read the reviews on Unilocal and had to check it out for ourselves. We went in with open hearts and open minds and enjoyed every tasting, the Super awesome staff and the owner even walked us around to see some of the farm! That meant so much to us. Agrotourism at its finest! We will be back.

Nice little winery in the middle of Hawaii and its Volcano :) I gave 4 stars only because some of the wines I thought was mediocre and they only serve Brie cheese. I would’ve loved to had more options on food. They have a lovely seating area for a nice picnic but they don’t serve food. Maybe bring your own, grab a bottle of wine and have a picnic there in the winery. Symphony wine is my favorite by far, it’s a nice white wine made from 100% pure symphony grapes. Taste closest to a Pinot Grigio. I also like the guava wine. The volcano red this year didn’t turn out so good… Maybe next year!

I wasn’t very impressed with the wine. Everything seemed rather halfhearted and aimed at making money; the cheese plate is way over priced. If time is short you can skip it altogether. We went to kill some time before darkness so we could see the volcano at night. We bought two bottles of wine mostly to be nice I think. I wish I had read the reviews first. The winery caveats their wines with the statement that each is unique, but we found one we purchased tasted more like fermented fruit juice at home than wine with fruit(like sangria) and the Volcano Red was similarly bad.

For Hawaii, this can’t be beat! The staff is friendly and very knowledgable. The owner spent a substantial amount of time with us discussing the wineries’ history which was amazing. The wines are ok if you compare it to Napa standards but for Hawaii this is as good as it gets. Great organization and would come again!

I’m torn I loved the idea of visiting a winery in Hawaii! I love supporting local agriculture which is shockingly sparse given high labor costs on the island. I also found this to be a lovely detour while we waited for late afternoon to enter volcano national park. For those reasons volcano winery would deserve 5 stars. Where I struggle is how bad the wine is(0 stars) ! Napa /Sonoma this place ain’t. I’ve even had md and Virginia wines. Those are like gourmet compared to Hawaiian wines. The wines are stupidly sweet and cloying. And you’ll feel tempted to buy Bc hey I’m on vacation and everything tastes better at the winery. Visit. Get a sampler. But don’t buy the wine. And enjoy the park.

When thinking of wine, Hawaii doesn’t strike me(or anybody really) as the next hottest destination for wine connoisseurs. After a tasting at Volcano Winery, this perception still stands– the wine was just A-OK, almost borderline meh. And I’m not a connoisseur. If you like sweet wine, perhaps your tastebuds will have a different opinion than mine. The 8 glass premium tasting($ 8), while much cheaper than any Napa counterpart, consisted primarily of SWEETWINE. Even the pinot noir. Okay, so Hawaii doesn’t foster the best environment for grapes. Therefore, this winery has to supplement its grape shortage with other fruits. Enter the jacaranda berry(looks like a tree with warts), guava, even TEA, and all of this explains why their wines are on the sweeter side. The tea wine is only offered on the premium tasting menu. They even have a honey«mead.» It was just WAYYYY too sweet for me. It’s interesting just to try, but overall, we did not like any of the wines enough to purchase a bottle. It’s a very small venue, mostly only tables to stand on and limited chairs. I would’ve liked more chairs. All the more to walk around outside and enjoy the greenery, I suppose. But watch out because I kept getting mosquito bites! ++ 20% Kamaaina discount on wine purchases! I’m glad I tried it to support local businesses and they were very friendly here but it just wasn’t my cup of tea(wine).

I am a casual wine drinker who doesn’t know a ton about wine, and I had a great time at this winery. The wine tasting was a great experience and the staff was very knowledgable and friendly. We ended up shipping a case of wine back home, mostly for gifts for friends and family. The wines were very unique and pretty sweet, so it might not please the more ‘sophisticated’ winos out there. The winery was a great way to spend a cold, rainy afternoon; the tasting was enough to get me good and buzzed!

Little journey to the winery but it was worth it. The staff there was very knowledgable and very friendly! My boyfriend and I had the sampler which consisted of 9 different types of wine. Great portion samplers for each wine… I was pretty tipsy by the third sample lol. Must visit this place when visiting Hilo! Definitely will visit again!

Hawai’i is known for a lot of things but seriously, as a local, the Volcano winery is Awesomesauce. Customer service is on point and Marie the owner is so amazing, along with her staff. Love coming here as often as I can.

We had the best time! Admittedly, I don’t know a ton about wine, and yeah, they weren’t the best we’ve ever had, but we still ended up with two delicious bottles. Be warned — some of the patrons are of the wine-swilling tourist variety. That is, old white people without boundaries and with a heavy dose of entitlement. But man, those ladies working the bar are so friendly and funny! They gave us some great tips for running around the island, and we ended up walking out with two bottles — the guava wine which was so tasty, deliciously sweet and nutty on the finish, and the mac nut mead which we’ve been enjoying back on the mainland to remind us of our time in HI. Again, ladies, thank you so much!

If you are visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and looking for something to do besides hiking, sightseeing, and checking out the lava flow, wine not stop in and visit a winery just 5 minutes from the park entrance? On my last trip there, my friends and I stopped in and did a tasting at the winery. We tried the their premium tasting menu. Now this winery is NOT your traditional winery and many of the flavors are quite creative and innovative, so some wine purists may not appreciate what they have to offer. Also many of the wines are a bit too sweet for me. Premium Tasting Menu: Symphony Dry — Dry white wine made from their Symphony grapes. Has hints of peach, apricot, and lychee. I liked this one. Pinot Noir — Plum and black currant, light oak. Not a fan of this one. Volcano Blush — This wine is a blend of white grapes and Jaboticaba berries. What is a Jaboticaba berry you ask? Its a South American fruit similar in size to grapes and used like grapes for wines, liquor, and jams. I actually know a person on the Big Island who sells their Jaboticaba to this winery, so I have tried this fruit before. Volcano Red — Red wine with notes of black cherry and cranberry. Also contains Jaboticaba Berry. Symphony Mele — semi-sweet white wine with notes of peach, apricot, and lychee. This one was quite popular with our tasting group and we bought a few bottles. Hawaiian Guava-Grape — White grapes mixed with Local Guavas. Macadamia Nut Honey — A light, sweet dessert wine. Honestly Im not a fan of sweet wine, but it was neat to try a meade. Infusion — Tea Wine with Macadamia Nut Honey. This is a pretty creative idea for a wine. However, not my cup of tea… or wine. Overall, the experience at Volcano Winery was enjoyable and the staff was very friendly and extremely knowledgable about their products. We walked out of the winery with smiles on our faces and several bottles to take back to Oahu.

I am not a wine aficionado, I prefer semi-sweet to sweet wines and love wines(or mead) made from fruit. This place was perfect and their wines delicious! We did the $ 8 premium wine tasting(SEVEN different wines to try!). My favorite overall was the tea infused wine, so good and never had anything like it before! The workers were all very friendly and helpful and took their time to answer any questions. Being 1 of the only 2 wineries in Hawaii(the other on Maui), this place was a must stop for me. If you have a more refined wine palate, you probably won’t enjoy the wines here as much, but overall it is still a great experience.

While visiting the Volcano National Park area you definitely want to set aside a few hours for this winery. ALL of the wines pair very well with at least one of the flavorful offerings. The staff is very knowledgeable and polite. You will like something unless you are a wine snob and determined. Note: This is Hawaii, not Old World, not Calfornia… Hawaii. There is no comparison to this region. It’s a Winery! Enjoy!

Since I have been trying wineries where ever I travel, it seemed remiss not to stop in and try Volcano Winery. It’s no California winery and I couldn’t really say I cared for anything I tried, but the location was very easy to find near the national park. And the staff was very knowledgable as well as professional

I recently visited Volcano Winery for the first time and had a great experience! There are two tasting flights: the standard flight($ 5.00) and the premium flight($ 8.00). Both tasting flights include samplings of their seven standard wines: Symphony Dry, Pinot Noir, Volcano Red, Symphony Mele, Volcano Blush, Hawaiian Guava-Grape, and Macadamia Nut Honey. The premium flight also includes a sampling of Infusion Tea Wine. Highlights: — Minutes from Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park — Knowledgeable and friendly staff — Sweet wines — 20% Kama’aina discount — $ 5 and $ 8 tasting flights(tax included) Overall, a great place to visit when you’re in the Volcano area!
