Excellent. Mushroom starter explodes in your mouth with flavor. Starting with the Oat bread and butter, we ENJOYED the whole meal. Loved the view. TAMMY

I had no idea about this little«nugget« I was lucky enough to stake claim to a pass to this event. Cindy C and I headed to Virginia City and caught the Virginia & Truckee train to Gold Hill that Ronele Dotson of RAD Strategies had set up for the event. It was a fascinating ride thru the mountains. The conductor explained the history of everything we rode by. I had no clue that such a tiny area had so much information packed in it– I’m not from here. So now I need to book another longer trip on the train to see and learn more. The train stopped on the hill above the Gold Hotel and we took the short hike down a path and some steps to the oldest hotel in Nevada. The hotel and restaurant has just finished three months of renovations. Updating the 100+ year old structure yet keeping its historical old feel. Ronele greeted us in the cozy bar and set us up with a refreshing drink. Try the Tommy Knocker, quite the shade of blue and very light on the hot summer day. We took our drinks out to the patio that overlooked the mountains to the south. Wonderful samples of the new menu was sent out for us to enjoy. Gnocchi, lamb chops with polenta, cioppino, steak, and bread pudding with caramel sauce. The prices seemed acceptable for the dinner experience they were offering, $ 12 – 30 for entrees. The dinning room was intimate and nicely decorated. Then we met Nikki and Bob the new owners of the hotel and restaurant. Nikki gave us a lengthy and through tour of the 154 year old property. First up this beautiful narrow wood staircase with exposed brick walls and wide plank ceiling to see the four of the original hotel rooms. Two are still haunted by Rosie and Willie. Then onto the addition that was completed in 1986 with 8 newer rooms that still air that Wild West charm. It surprised me to learn there were also three other structures that were cottages that can be rented. And a house that is used for meetings. Enjoying a night of old mining charm won’t break the bank either. Rooms start at $ 45 and go to $ 145 with a romantic fireplace. The cottages are $ 105 to 225. This update of history has inspired me to want to return for a weekend and check out more that the Gold Hill Hotel /Restaurant and the area has to offer. Thanks to everyone’s hard work they put into the event.
