I haven’t had hibachi in a while. I decided to stop by Chiba, which is close to home. Not very many hibachi in the area have good reviews, so I decided not to go out of my way. As with most hibachi places, you have to wait for your table area to fill up so the chef can come out and make the food for your group and any strangers who were seated too. The show is certainly what’s worth the buck. The chefs at Chiba are engaging, funny, and dexterious. Unfortunately they don’t change up from the same show you get anywhere else. There’s always an onion ring volcano that gets peed on by a little boy whose trousers drop and whizzes water. I’m just glad they didn’t try and flip the shrimp in my mouth, cause I can’t catch. I have some complaint about my food, as it wasn’t that good. The meat was especially bland, it needed marinading badly. Either the chef had a dull knife, or the meat was tough, since it took several cuts to seperate the raw fillets. Even after a slew of sauces squirted on, it was merely ‘ok.’ Which leads me to my further observation… where all those sauces and oil on the grill go. They float your food in the middle of your plate. I enjoyed my rice for a few moments before dripping veggies were placed on there. Then it was exasperated by the meat swimming in sauce. I took home a lot of left overs and was glad when someone else ate them. The waitresses were night and day. One was quite nice, but the other was brusque. She even took our order from the other side of the grill. It was very difficult to hear her and I had to ask her to repeat things several times. The salad prior to the meal was average. The clear soup tasted like salty water. I ordered a house soup as well, not knowing the meal came with soup. It was actually the best thing I ate all night. Tasted like miso and filled with steaming hot veggies and a couple dumplings.

Lived in the area 10 years. Abiut our 8th or 9th trip here; 2nd for my birthday. Wonderful expwriwnce as always. Interactive staff, very attentive and engaging. Brought me out a crème Brule for my birthdayn and cookies for the rest of my family. As always an outstanding experience, be back soon. Oh, and for those who are unhappy with the service or food, just talk to the staff. I came with 2 family members with dietary restrictionsn one with celiacs disease; they were very accommodating and helpful with options. Great job Chiba’s!

I went here last night because I had a coupon. My daughter and I both had steak and shrimp and now have suffering all day today with fevers and nausea, saw the doctor and said we were suffering from food poisoning. My guess was probably bad shrimp, as it tasted kind of fishy.

We love this place. Our families favorite. 4 kids and always a win. Not the showiest I’ve seen, but delicious.

Visited their sushi bar three times and liked it, although each time we went the restaurant was completely empty. Brought in a giftcard and they sneakily adjusted the prices so we ended up paying full price, plus the cost of the gift card. Seriously?! I’m never going back, how dishonest!

My coworker bought us some lunch this week and while most of my items were delicious, the teriyaki chicken wasn’t. It came in a watery teriyaki sauce. If the chicken hadn’t been so dry it might have redeemed the lunch special. The veggies and bean sprouts had excellent flavor as did the rice. The stand out was the veggie tempura appetizer. I should have just gone with it as an entire meal! We ordered take out and my tempura was still crunchy when she arrived back at work. The dipping sauce had a good taste too. Most definitely something I would order again from them.

Great sushi! American influence is definitely apparent in the cuisine, but speaking as a VB native who spent two years in Okinawa, I’ll take a Mt. Fuji or Trashmore roll over most of the sushi I had in Japan.

This is my third time visiting Chiba Japanese Steakhouse in Fairfield Shopping center. I love this place because this restaurant has the best fried rice among Virginia Beach’s Japanese steakhouse. The atmosphere is very friendly even though its not as fancy as other steakhouses The service is good and fast.

I eat here with my wife or a friend about once a month. Great food and the prices are reasonable. It is a hidden gem in the shopping center. The salads are very fresh and cold with crisp lettuce. It gets busy sometimes, but you can usually get a seat without a wait. Staff is very friendly and accomodating. I highly recommend it as a must visit place.

This place isn’t located on a busy intersection but so make sure you drive through the shopping center so you can find the place. There wasn’t much foot traffic while I was there so I suppose this is a neighborhood favorite type of place that does well in the evenings. First, the staff is extremely helpful and friendly. As with the quality of the food there is a little more to be desired. I ordered the hibachi steak lunch special and it tasted just okay. You get your typical rice and veggies but just like my steak there wasn’t any special flavor to what I was eating. Our group took a bit to get settled so I went through my food quickly mostly because I was hungry. My chef did mess up on my order and gave my fried rice to someone else so I had to wait a few extra minutes while my rices was being made in the back(by someone else and while he was taking care of everyone else). I will say that this is the first hibachi grill type place where I’ve seen one of the cooks mess up on his presentation. I was watching him from a distance at an adjacent table and I saw him drop his utensil three times within the opening act. It took him a while to get into his groove. The good thing here though is that you can get you can get a hibachi lunch for under $ 10 where I typically expect to drop $ 20 on dinner alone. That is worthy of a third star from an otherwise two star experience. The fire volcano from the onions is always a cool show anyway…

Seriously! It’s my birthday and was planning to bring my family of 6 this evening. Called ahead to be told that they are not open today. Only today. No other explanation. It’s hard enough getting my family’s schedule to coincide. Bummed!

The reviews here dont do them justice. These guys are down to earth people who make a killer sushi and skilled hibachi tricks. The food is good the place is clean, bathrooms are clean. very relaxing inside. and great customer service, Do I need to keep going? 5 stars!

We have been going here for a while since it opened so naturally we thought of having a big party there. About 20 people but so we called for reservations and the guy tells us NO. He wasn’t accommodating at all. I think this is bad business, even if it’s the weekend and he may expect his«normal» weekend crowd. I will never go back there again and I will gladly tell everyone else the same. Oh and the AC in the place seems to never work. It’s like being in the South Pacific eating outside in there! Save your money and go else where.

Never trust a white sailor on his recommendation of a Japanese restaurant. That’s what I learned tonight. If only I could use profanity on Unilocal.Everything pointed to a disappointing night. First, it was the completely empty restaurant, as I was the only patron. Not a single person in there was Japanese(which, though totally racist, makes a huge difference). In fact, the chef was from mainland China. That’s like having a vegan hippie from Portland cook southern comfort food. Then the miso soup was oh so bland. And the scorpion roll? The sushi rice was gummy. That’s right, gummy. It was gross. And the sashimi? Kept too cold, like eating a slab of ice, because they needed to keep it «fresh» for as long as possible. Service was okay, but I’m rating the food here. The food was terrible, and I can’t get over how it was a wasted meal. Afterward, I contemplated going back to Kyushu, seven minutes away, just to get something else to cleanse my pallet. But alas, I had lost all of my appetite.
