We are very happy with the repair/replacement of our plaster ceiling by Mr. Patterson. Our 1940 Cape Cod style home had a living room ceiling that was badly cracked and on the point of collapse. Mr. Patterson immediately pinpointed the problem and set up several support beams to hold the ceiling in place(and protect our family) until he could come and do the repair job in a few weeks. He is a very thorough and knowledgeable craftsman and I highly recommend him for any plaster repair work, particularly on older homes like ours. He was also careful to protect our floors from being scratched up during this repair and took considerable steps to shield us from dust during this job.

I have nothing but good things to say about this company. David Patterson has done a number of plaster repairs for us, including fixing four ceilings in our house. His sense of responsibility is such that he came out on a Sunday to buttress my son’s bedroom ceiling before being able to repair it a few weeks from then to ensure it didn’t collapse in the meantime. His prices are very affordable and he sticks to the schedules he proposes. If you have plaster that needs repair you won’t find anyone better. He’s been doing this for about 30 years and it shows — he knows his stuff.

D.S. Patterson’s business model is basically a shell company that contracts to independent subcontractors. As I understand, they originally were a company that had it’s own crews, but after the son took over it was changed to the current model. Anyway, I had one of their subs quote a remodel and he itemized and priced the total job into separate categories of work. Before I received the estimate, I was told work could begin in May. After receiving the estimate from their office, I placed calls to the sub and into the office. Never got a call back from the sub. The office didn’t return my calls after the weekend passed. Result? Now I couldn’t get the sub until the end of June! Yet, naturally I still had questions and needed to talk to the sub. My questions centered around a poorly written contract, which is the norm for an industry full of types that can’t compose a well-written contract despite somehow passing the state licensing exams which require such knowledge. Silence from the sub, John DePriest. Since I now had to wait until the end of June, I emailed a revised proposal into the office in which I would do the framing work, since I am experienced in that and didn’t want to sit on my thumbs waiting for progress. It took another day or so for the office to acknowledge receiving the email. And another few days until I received word that the sub didn’t want the job now. So the sub comes to the house, does an estimate, wants me to pay it and doesn’t want me to ask any questions or ask for references or see examples of his work. Maybe because there is no John DePriest listed in Virginia’s Dept. of Professional and Occupational Regulation as being a licensed contractor.

Our house was damaged after all of the rain we had in September. We had a large section of our ceiling and wall damaged by leaking water. It is the original 1940 plaster that we desperately wanted to save. We called 4 companies to give us an estimate. D. S Patterson is the only one who followed through. Hugo, gave us a breakdown of how he was going to repair it, what materials he would use and how long it would take. He also was able to rough in two closets in the knee wall of our bedroom. Their prices seemed extremely reasonable for the quality and amount of work that was performed. The office staff was pleasant and easy to work with.
