My husband and I went to the law offices of Charles Rainey for an initial estate planning meeting. We are a young couple with two small kids and he suggested a few documents be in place should something happen to the two of us. The session lasted an hour. He went over the documents extremely quickly and dismissed our questions saying everything would be easier to understand once we received a copy to review. He spent the next 20 minutes talking about his own family and his ummm softball team? 30 minutes after our meeting he emails us a copy of the documents and an invoice totaling $ 2500. I had a mini heart attack. After talking to a few other lawyers I was informed he was drawing up paperwork to establish trusts and other legal situations that are way above and beyond the amount of assets we would leave behind. I don’t even have 2,500 dollars in my savings! We politely declined his services and offered to pay for the hour long meeting(softball conversation included) because he spent the time to talk to us. He said as far as he was concerned the work was done and he required payment in full. Fine. I made a mistake. Expensive lesson learned. In summary — he charges $ 2,500 for 1.5 hours of work. Legal zoom is cheaper. But I suppose I can die knowing my estate is taken care of even though I have no money to leave behind.
