Knitting is a great hobby and you can find decent yarn at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby or even Walmart. What Birmingham is lacking is number a quality knitting shops with fun, unique yarns and a focus on workmanship and quality. Knit Happenz is that place. What began as Memory Hagler’s Knitting, Etc, is now run by Memory’s daughter Holly. Holly is very supportive of the fiber community and is instrumental in the Hoover Library’s Purl on the Plaza. Bring in your hanks and dad will put it on the ball winder and spin you up a nice size ball. If you can’t translate a pattern into a different yarn, Holly or one of the staff will fix you right up. Pop into the store an you will always find Holly and a group of women knitting and laughing their day away. You can freely pull up a chair and join in without feeling like an outsider. If you are stuck and need a little help because you are just learning, someone will cheerfully help you out. I almost felt like I stepped back in time into a church knitting group or quilting bee. The yarns are affordable — priced what any upscale yarn would offer. If you want find wonderful brands like Blue Sky, Berroco or Tahki-Charles, this is your place. I can’t recommend Knit Happenz enough.
