Pretty decent price, and Nice staff, but the chicken breast burger wasn’t anything to write home about. There was a lot of options on the menu maybe I didn’t choose right!

Best pancakes ever! When we want pancakes we come here over any place around. The blueberry pancakes are very tasty and you really don’t need syrup at all. The staff and owner are always great and treat people with respect. Sure the place is needs to be remodeled but the food is good and that is all that really matters. Besides breakfast they burgers and club sandwich is good too. Not to mention that they give you a choice of what kind of fries you want. I love this place and I come every chance I get.

I live this place. It’s a homey, down to earth place. My daughter got the strawberry waffles with ice cream on top. The waffles ended up being soggy after a while and when we told the waitress, without even asking, she offered to give her another waffle and then reduced the price. The waffle was really good. Make sure to get the strawberry sauce on the side. My husband got the chicken friend steak – tender and tasty. My son got the western omelette which he devoured. Both the chicken friend steak and the omelette came with hash browns. I didn’t get anything because the servings were so large that I just had a little of everyone else’s dishes.

My boyfriend’s family has been coming here for years, and, so one day we [boyfriend and I] went here for breakfast. We had errands to do, starting with my really early 8AM doctor’s appointment, and we were hungry on the way into Ventura. He got his usual, and, I had gotten the ham&cheese omelet with a cup of orange juice. Our waitress was extremely nice — joking with us, making sure we were taken care of as well as talking with my boyfriend about his family. I didn’t realize that all of their omelets come with a side(either fruit or potatoes prepared in some way) and toast, which, combined with the omelet is a large plate of food. Everything was delicious and mouth-watering — the ham wasn’t salty, the omelet was cooked perfectly, and the potatoes were not burnt and fluffy on the inside. I couldn’t finish all of my food, so, my boyfriend ended up eating the rest for me. He had gotten the Chile Verde omelet, and, the sauce and pork was perfection — I will have to get it myself one of the next times I come back! As well, the price was good! For a lot of food, to the point we were almost stuffed, it was only about $ 30 if I remember correctly. I’m really glad I went here! Amazing food, good people and good prices always makes for a great resturant. I highly recommend this place to anyone who needs to eat breakfast out, wants to or happens to be in town or on the way out — a great place all around!

What a trip – back in time that is. It’s a cozy beautifully preserved time capsule. Low booths and L shaped counter are comfortable for enjoying the large meals served by this friendly staff. I loved spotting the various vintage items around the room and behind the most excellent counter area. Large hot pepper sauce selection available upon request. Highly recommended for breakfast!

WEnt here the day after Thanksgiving with a group of 12. I must say this wasn’t my first choice but with such a huge group I didn’t know which breakfast spot could accomodate us all. Great diner/greasy spoon type place. BESTWAFFLESIVEEVERHAD!!! So light, airy, and cinnamony!!! I also ordered an omelette which was pretty good. Wait staff was great, attended to our needs and were good sports about the little ones bouncing around from person to person. My husband plan on going back by ourselves very soon.

Why should you eat at the Vagabond? I only do reviews for places I frequent, and as a regular of the diner I can tell you that it’s for their GREAT breakfasts, including their omelettes, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and waffles. They’re all made fresh to order and are delicious. I’ve tried every single omelette they make and you really can’t go wrong. My wife and I LOVE their distinct iced tea and often times get a cup of it to go. The service is very good and on point. I think that people often misunderstand the waitstaff here because they’re not accustomed to waitresses who have worked together in the same restaurant, sometimes for decades, and they don’t take crap from rude patrons. And let’s face it, we’ve all seen a lot of rude patrons in restaurants. The waitstaff know their food, their drinks, their prices, and each other’s strengths and weaknesses — and they help each other out constantly. So sometimes people seem to interpret this as being too direct or unfriendly but that simply is not the case. You might not find a more caring waitstaff and hostess group anywhere else in Ventura. By the way, anyone who jokes about the age of the waitstaff is clueless and misses the point entirely. Think about it, do you really want teenage/early 20’s kids preparing and serving your meals? I mean, what could go wrong there?!? Or would you rather have an experienced and competent waitress(who cares) serve your meal? The Vagabond has this unique mixture of customers where some of them are just passing through on the 101, staying at the motel, or attending events at the Fair Grounds. Then, there are also a lot of regular locals who are there day in and day out. It’s like a community unto itself, and begins to feel like family once you know the place. As a local, I know I have a lot of breakfast spot choices and at one time or another I’ve tried nearly all of them. But we keep coming back to the Vagabond because it simply is the best.

I’d been here years ago when I lived in Ventura. At that time they had some of the best biscuits & gravy I’d ever eaten so I KNEW that would be part of my breakfast this past weekend. I got the chile verde rancheros breakfast special with refried beans instead of potatoes & biscuit instead of toast with a side of gravy. The B & G were good but not quite as good as I’d recalled. The biscuit was a bit dry but the gravy was still as creamy, sausage-y & yummy as ever. The chile verde rancheros stole the show! The verde sauce was tangy with just a little heat, the pork fell apart in my mouth and the eggs… oh the eggs! They were cooked to a perfect over medium with a gorgeous yellow yolk. So now for the refried beans. With no cheese or sour cream on top I thought they’d just be a little dry & your average«whatever» beans but no, these were outstanding. According to the waitresses I spoke with after I devoured about half my plate, the beans & salsa verde are made from scratch & you can tell. And speaking of the waitresses, the 2 women who tended the table were engaging, friendly & super attentive. After all these years, I’m happy to see that the Vagabond Coffee Shop is still serving delicious food & caring for their customers.

Old school diner/coffee shop near downtown Ventura. I met the owner at my work and I asked her if they made good biscuits and gravy… and she said«of course we do… home-made» So I had to go try it. I went with my son on Saturday afternoon and was greeted by the owner and the cashier. They were very nice and welcoming. The inside looks just like what you would expect. Kind of reminded me of Mel’s Diner show that used to be on TV when I was a kid. I like small, hole in the wall places, so I was very happy with the vintage ambiance. The server staff fit right in with the décor, their uniforms an spunky personalities :) The food was honestly a good, hearty American breakfast. I ordered corned beef hash, with 3 eggs and hash browns… and of course a side of biscuits and gravy. Everything tastes home made, came to the table hot and a pretty good size portion. My son had the breakfast steak and eggs and shared my biscuits and gravy. It definitely beats Denny’s or IHOP for about the same price. I’m definitely going back.

This is the place my cousins and I meet up every once in awhile to catch up on life, I’m the single one of the group so it’s my job to corral everyone together so we don’t forget we’re related. Vagabond is American Style home-cooking type of food, you aren’t going to get any fancy fixings here so if that’s your forte, then pass this little café and head on to the Pierpont inn or whatever else floats your proverbial boat. Normally we go for an early breakfast, pancakes with maple syrup accompanied with bacon or sausage and lots of great conversation, its always busy and the staff work hard to get the customers seated in a timely manner. So if you enjoy and old school café like setting and love a hearty breakfast, then stop on in with your family or a loved one… my cousins and I always seem to start reminiscing about our childhood when we go… must be something in the syrup. :)
