Westchester Community College

It is one step above an institutional school for wayward children and that is exactly how the administration and teachers treat the students (maybe because that is how the students behave. I don’t know.) The school is rigid and unwilling to work with students, even when the school has created a problem or the offices are behind in addressing problems because of legitimately busy times. The student pays for those delays. WCC is a government institution designed to keep adults employed, not to educate.
my observations:
The school is expert at wasting people’s time from the beginning of the enrollment process, to students who work in the school on work study being let loose on the other students: The ways are too many to list.
WCC also has a knack for leaving out the most important information until it is too late. Nowhere, for example, when registering on line, which they force new students to do in the «center» on the Valhalla campus, does it explain if you remove a class from your cart there is a fee. That information is available when the fee is in your bill and it can not be removed — and the bursars and financial aid office is clear across campus. The school also does not mention that applications take a certain time to process, therefore dropping it off in person, rather than on line, might not be in the best interest of time, because that’s all that can be accomplished that day. No registration, nothing. On the front page is a link to a PDF «how to make a payment», which explains in detail the links one must keep clicking through to get to the payment screen. In the non crazy world, that link would say «make a payment» and the payment screen would appear. The list of bad information/​time wasters goes on.
Contacting any school office will result in correspondence with a teenager on work-​study who has a poor command of english and is therefore 1) unable to understand what is being said or respond with the correct information 2) making up words that sound similar to english words, but are actually just made up, leaving the reader/​listener to intuit what is being said. That’s not a good set up when talking about financial aid and admissions deadlines, funding or program requirements. The students do not know when to hand over the conversation to an adult professional.
If you have an education past the 5 th grade, speak english as a native language, can self direct to put pants on in the morning, and have an IQ above 100, avoid WCC.

I did not want to come to this school. I really didn’t. I began my college career at La Salle University in Philadelphia, PA and after my first year, financial aid couldn’t come through so at the eleventh hour I got stuck at this school. After a year of going through the real college experience, coming here was horrible.
This is no college, this is a high school disguised as a college. The classes feel more like high school classes and, unless you are really stupid, you will not be challenged here. There are exceptions, though. Certain professors, especially in the science department, make it more difficult than it needs to be. My biology professor failed to notice that the entire class was on the cusp of failing the class.
The student body is unenthusiastic about school. In fact, they are for the most part unenthusiastic about everything. There’s no one person you’ll really be able to identify with mostly because there’s no social interaction unless you’ve all been best friends since high school at got stuck at this pig sty, too.
The math department is also ridiculous. The idea of a placement test is absurd and simply an attempt to squeeze more money out of students and keep them here longer. I took my placement test and it directed me to taking a certain class, when it came time to register, it wouldn’t let me because my score apparently wasn’t high enough to take a basic math course for no credit. So what am I supposed to do? Thankfully, you can take online courses elsewhere and WCC will accept them, that’s what I’m doing.
I don’t eat at the cafeteria. The prices there are outrageous for food. When I found out they added a «$ 5 minimum for all purchases» I was done there.
The only thing I give this place 2 stars for is the fact that the credits you get there are all transferable and the school IS cheap. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for.
If I can offer a word of advice to prospective students: DON’T BE PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS. You are better off going to a real SUNY school or any real school or heck, just taking a semester off. NEVER COME HERE!

Hey you! Yes YOU! Do you know what a hammer is? Then perhaps you might be a bit too advanced for this class. Seriously. Please read on.
This review isn’t so much a full on review of the college itself; however, of the misleading description of the aforementioned Home Repair & Remodeling Course (CE-​HOME 2000).
This review was originally posted in direct response to the college not responding to my concerns over the misleading course description, as well as the unprofessional and unhygienic «instructor» (quotes intended) of the course. (See addendum at bottom.)
CAVEAT EMPTOR – BUYER BEWARE!
MISLEADING COURSE DESCRIPTION
As I mentioned, the course was misleading in the brochure insofar that it did not give a crucial detail that it is LECTURE ONLY. No hands on. Of course they don’t tell you this, I can only assume, to make an easy $ 110 off you, which you cannot get a refund for, as their policy is you have to cancel two days before the class starts.
UNPROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTOR
Picture, if you will, Mr. Magoo. Deaf as a stone, blind as a bat, and patronizing to all the females in the class.
Allegedly the instructor was a professional contractor (obviously MANY years ago), and he appears to bank heavily on the fact that at some point in the past he was either ON a radio show or HOSTED a radio call in handyman show. So you would have a reasonable expectation that his tools would be in a tool box or at a minimum a tool belt. Not Mr. Magoo! Oh no. His dust bunnied, cob-​webby tools were thrown into a shopping basket pilfered from Pathmark.
When one of the two gentlemen in the class stopped him as he was going into detail to the women about the need for a 25 foot tape measure (so we could hang our drapes, because all women are concerned with draperies, don’tchaknow), the gentleman wanted to know HOW to read or use the tape measure, the instructor then suggested the GENTLEMAN show us (um, why then did the gentleman pay $ 110 + a $ 5 materials fee* if the GENTLEMAN was expected to teach the class?).
Needless to say, it didn’t take long before that gentleman realized this class is not what he (or any of us, for that matter, I am sure) expected, and as respectfully and diplomatically as he could, let the instructor know this before he left the lecture hall.
*Also worth noting, the «materials» consisted of a folder with fasteners (which were not used, because half the hand outs/​leaflets were not 2 hole punched) and the contents appeared not to be class materials, but hand outs anyone could get at hardware stores and Home Depot. Allegedly our $ 5 went towards the «collating» of everything.
For the next 45 minutes, Mr. Magoo was distracted and constantly trying to move the female students closer around him despite the fact we all were sitting in reasonable and expected spots in the lecture hall, but this guy was so controlling, perhaps in part because of his blindness and deafness, or perhaps some deeper issue.
I know I must come off as someone who is anti-​handicapped, when in reality, my irritation at the misleading course description is compounded by the fact that I feel DUPED that I spent $ 110 of my hard-​earned bucks for a class led by an instructor who is incapable of COMMUNICATING CLEARLY AND CONCISELY.
UNHYGIENIC INSTRUCTOR
As if bearing witness to his filthy, dust-​bunnied tools (in the stolen shopping basket from Pathmark) wasn’t bad enough, Mr. Magoo stood there with his nose dripping like a faucet (which is ironic, as I am sure at least 1 – 2 of us wanted to learn HOW to fix a leaky faucet!). Literally. DRIP DRIP DRIP! Yet no ubiquitous, grandfatherly hanky or bandana ever made an appearance. Hell, he didn’t even use the cuff of his shirt or sweater to blot the dripping. Sadly, he let it drip and let it land where it may: half the time on the front of his shirt, and the other half the time DIRECTLY IN HIS MOUTH. So as if he was not scatter brained and patronizing ENOUGH to distract me from what little viable information he might share, it was disgusting to witness. How am I expected to sit there and be expected to learn anything when the sight of his sinuses leaking directly into his mouth (and causing me to sit there and silently dry heave to myself at the sight of this)?
This isn’t the quality of a class to be presented in a college lecture hall. This is something better suited to being given as a workshop at a seniors center.
ADDENDUM:
9÷20÷12 Registrar has arranged so I may sign up for another non-​credit course, and have been assured that the language in the course description for the Spring 2013 brochure will be changed (in the event the course is offered again). Let’s wait and see.

Worst customer service I have ever had to deal with!!! Stay clear of this school if you need any help. It has been a nightmare to enroll and the staf is so rude and unprofessional! I guess it’s true you get what you paid for!
