Hunter’s Head Tavern has an authentic English Pub vibe! Loved that you order at the window, move to the side to pick up your drinks from the bar and then be seated to wait for your food to be served! Inside was a very cozy pub atmosphere, but it was such a beautiful day that we opted for the lovely outside patio. Hubby got the Chicken Pot Pie which he LOVED! I got the French Dip Sandwich with Au Jus which arrived with onions(not mentioned on the menu). The waiter said they’ve had that issue before with people and they gladly remade it for me. It was delicious!!! The manager came out and apologized and offered us a dessert for the inconvenience. I chose a Strawberry Pie which was SOOOOO good! So good in fact, that hubby ate half of it when it arrived while I was in the ladies room! I thought the prices were quite reasonable for a delicious english pub lunch and good service. Especially since they feature Farm to Table — organic, local and non-GMO meats and produce wherever possible in their dishes. Don’t miss taking your picture outside with the red London phone booth! Lots of selfie/Instagram opportunities there!

Stopped here again with my wife and was pleased to see the braised shirt ribs were gone from the menu. This time, we ordered calamari, which was sensational, and we both got hamburgers. These burgers were insanely good and I was highly recommend. Try his place gets its star back and I’m glad to see they removed that bad dish I had last time.

The Tavern in Upperville, VA is a good stop for food at a local pub type atmosphere, built in a 1780’s style tollhouse Inn. The rustic hunter’s feel is complimented by an outdoor garden patio seating. If the weather is nice, I’d opt for being seated outdoors. Ordering is done at the bar area, with delivery to the table by college kids. It works, eliminates errors, but feels odd. Tip accordingly(15% should be minimum for good service). Bread and water at table are standard. Food is basic, but the chicken pot pie is always good. The fish and chips are okie, but always, always, always ask for the specials. Those move the food from average to better than average. Drink selection include local wines, ales, and imported hard cider. Desserts are also good, but nothing extravagant. One word of warning: Call for dinner appointments! Busy nights you can be waiting an hour or more for seating.

Ordered sausage sampler breakfast. Potatoes, links, and sausage patty were cold.(potatoes were ice cold as if not even heated) Replacements were hot but appeared to be nuked. Would have waited for crisper potatoes. Also, no visit by manager about the issue. If I return, will probably order the French toast. It «looked» pretty good.

FANTASTICPUB!!! My husband and I make frequent trips to England… and we’ve only found ONE pub in old England that we love as much as this one! Our English friends came to visit a week ago, and one of them said that the chips(fries) here are better than any she’s ever had in England.:-) The food is TODIEFOR. My favorite is the chicken pot pie… SCRUMPTIOUS!!! My husband’s is the Guinness Beef Stew,(the mashed potatoes will make you droooooool.) And the bread they bring beforehand is straight out of heaven! We have yet to venture out to any of the other food, as we cannot bring ourselves to pass up the pot pie and stew… one day I’m sure we’ll try something else.;-) Oh, the black cobbler and the chocolate cake are DELICIOUS. Tip: Make a reservation on weekends,(available on Open Table, as well)… and, if you drink water, forego the tap water… it’s clearly well water, but has a funky taste. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with this AMAZING pub!

Stopped in for a beer and some food. The restaurant has been booked but we sat at the bar. The boiled peanuts were a cool and delicious touch. Fish and chips were delicious.

My wife and I stopped here on our motorcycle for brunch. We’ve been here once before and loved it and looked forward to another great experience. For any bikers thinking of going, park on the road if you can. Their lot is gravel, uneven and sloped. This place is great in every way. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I really enjoy the authentic British pub feel and ordering method. The food is amazing with that fresh farm to table taste and presentation. I had the bangers and mash which was perfect. Loved the nice charring on the links and the gravy was perfect. My wife got one of their salads which she too loved. We started with the meatball appetizer, nothing very special, but tasted really good with a nice sauce that worked well. If you go in the warmer days they have a great patio eating area well shaded and obscured from the view of the road. Overall a great place for elevated pub fare with quality in every dish.

Came here with the work crew before heading to a conference at Salamander Resort. Cute little setting and fantastic food featuring authentic English pub-style fare. Really enjoyed the welsh rarebit, bubble and squeak(great vegetarian option!), and fish and chips. Great beer/wine list, too! At first, it was a little confusing on how to order(you go up to the bar area first — such a duh thing, I know!) but our waitress was all smiles and told us she’d handle taking our orders, since we were a larger group. Love this place. Highly recommend!

This was my third visit to Hunters Head and I’ve been consistently impressed with the food, atmosphere, and service. Our table had the superfood salad(this was mine and they happily subbed salmon for the standard turkey), beef stroganoff, chicken pot pie, and kids pizza. All were a hit. Our out of town guests raved about the meal and the cozy room with the roaring fire. I’ve been equally happy dining outside in warmer weather too. Great experience!

Had dinner at Hunter’s Head on the Sunday after Christmas 2015. Stopped in on a whim — had never been here before. The place was packed. I managed to secure a seat in the Pub area. The setup is a little weird. You have to go up to a little door next to the bar to order your food and drink. So I did, a Shepherd’s Pie and a pint of a Virginia IPA I’ve never had, plus a glass of water. The order taker told me to watch the space at the end of the bar and pick up my drinks when they came up. So I went and sat down and waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, after 10 minutes I re-approached the order taker person and asked her if she had ordered my beer. She checks — turns out they were out of it. Nice pro-active communications there staff! When were you going to tell me? So I ordered a Tennet’s Pale Lager — never had it before, but thought I would try it. While I’m waiting for my food, the pub area starts to fill up with people who are in line to place a food order at the little window. It starts to get really crowded, with people bumping up against me at my table, and servers fighting to get through the room with orders of food. Really poor design and setup. The Shepherd’s Pie finally came out. I asked for hot sauce — all they offer is Tabasco, so I accepted that. I also asked the server — was it just me — or was it uncomfortably hot and humid in the Tavern? She replied it was hot — that they have 6 – 8AC window units for the place — and that they removed all of them this past October for the winter. I got news for you Hunter’s Head Tavern — with climate change progressing the way that it is — you might want to put those AC window units back in place. My Shepherd’s Pie was really good. But I was sweating by the time I was done eating it — so my enjoyment of the meal was somewhat tempered by the inside temp. of the Tavern. I’d like to come back. Guess I’ll wait for a day when it’s cold out so that place is not so ridiculously hot!

HHT really leaves me scratching my head. Like, why is the service so awesome, and yet at the same time, the food can be so lackluster? I happened to go there twice for lunch during my visit to NoVa. My first go-around included a pulled pork sandwich which ended up being too sweet and tasted like whiskey. I tried a few other things like a frisee salad, weinerschnitzel, some sides, chocolate cake, and banana pudding. Absolutely everything was as boring as dirt. I’m not sure if my tastes became incredibly snobby after returning from Europe, but this was some elementary type stuff. Second time was much, much better. I had a bacon-wrapped veal meatloaf which turned out to be really tasty. So I’m just like«eh» about the whole place. The rotating menu is great, but I’m not sure if it’s enough to get me to go back personally, you know? Still worth a visit as you will probably have the pants charmed off of you!

We used to really enjoy coming here, but have noticed that the past few times have each gotten progressively worse. Most recently we went on a busy Saturday and had awful service. Had to ask others for water refills, watched other customers in the same area as us, being served by the same waiter having to go up to the bar to get refills of beer and wine. Food came to us cold. In all, we were NOT impressed and were actually VERY disappointed on this trip.

First a disclaimer; I’m a Brit. I’ve eaten all over the USA and of course at many British themed pubs. I know exactly what a British pub should have and this place has it in spades. I’ve travelled all over this country, LA, New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Hawaii, Florida, Cedar Rapids(yikes!!!). This is by far THEMOSTAUTHENTICBRITISHPUB I’VEEVERBEENTOINTHEUSA!!! Bubble and squeak? Check. Cod and chips with MUSHYPEAS? Check(awesome mushy peas too). Great beer, lovely beer garden(Ivy climbing up stone walls. A red UK phone box out front, clean tables, high hedges… are we in West Sussex?!! Just for a moment we were). Bloody ‘ell! Great service. Easy and convenient bar experience, We took our two dogs on the patio. They sat quietly in the peaceful and pleasant environment while we noshed on cod, real mushy peas and thick chip shop style chips. The staff saw hat we had two panting dogs and brought out fresh water for them. It was like 93 °F. SOTHOUGHTFUL. These folks know that people love their pets and made us and our pups feel very welcome. We are going there again tomorrow. We are going to have the bangers and mash and sticky pudding. Highly recommended!!!

**** 4 ½**** Nestled in Upperville, which is on the way to Middleburg, is what could be described as a local landmark. Hunter’s Head Tavern is unique in that it partners with a local farm(Ayrshire Farms) and uses organic non-gmo, and local meats and produce. Essentially farm to table. Given all of that, Hunter’s Head puts out some of the most delicious food I have had in the area coupled with excellent service. I went here for the first time during Mother’s Day weekend. My mom had been here a few times and loved it. When you pull up, it looks like you are driving to a house(you’re at the right place). They have a small parking lot but there is also street parking. I made reservations, which I am told is suggested because they can fill up on weekends. There is seating outside(dog friendly which is a perk), inside on the first and second floors. I love the vibe. It’s full of old furniture, some mismatched but makes sense and fits together. When I say old, I mean more on the antique side. Their menu contains standard pub food mixed with their seasonal items. They write their menu on a big chalkboard wall by the entrance. It is also conveniently located near the bar and where you go and order your food. Lucky for us, because we were a big party, they took our food orders at the table. For a pub/tavern, they have a fairly large menu and it took us awhile to decide what we wanted. My parents ordered spinach artichoke dip and calamari as appetizers. Then we ordered our meals: fish and chips with sweet potato fries(my mom, aunt, and family friend), veal(dad), shepherd’s pie(my sister), burger(my other sister), French dip(fiancé), and chicken pot pie(me). While we were waiting, they brought out their freshly baked bread. Ohh. My. Goodness. The bread is delicious. It comes warm out of the oven, crispy and with a crust on the outside, and soft on the inside. Also went well with the spinach artichoke dip I might add. As for the main course, everyone seemed to enjoy their food(there wasn’t too much talking at this point). I loved my chicken pot pie. It was presented differently in that they had the pie crust on top of the filling(almost like a soup). It was delicious. The crust was light and airy. The filling was creamy, delicious, definitely a perfect comfort food dish. Service was very good throughout our meal. Our server apologized when my fiancé noticed something wrong with his meal. She not only comped the meal but gave us a choice for dessert. We decided on their sticky buns with a bourbon pecan glaze. Perfect gooey choice. Overall an awesome dining experience.

Had originally planned to go to another restaurant in Middleburg, but it was closed for the 4th of July. So we searched for other places, and found this British pub, and I’m so glad we did! The food was fantastic, the staff was friendly, and sitting outside in the garden area on a beautiful day was supreme. I loved the wooden tables and oversized chairs, and the rather interesting ordering system involving a wooden spoon(the host will explain the ordering system when you arrive if you’ve not dined there before). In terms of food, I’d recommend sticking to traditional British fare when ordering here. I made the mistake of ordering the salmon with mango and pineapple salsa. While the salmon was pretty overcooked, everything else on the dish was tasty. The order of Mac and cheese that the three of us split was by far the star of the meal. For dessert, we had the sour cherry pie with ice cream. I kid you not — I would drive all the way to Middleburg just for that pie. Maybe the Mac and cheese too. Also highly recommend ordering one of the after-dinner coffees. I had mine with Jameson, and they are pretty heavy-handed there with the liquor. Great pub! I’ll be going back again.
