I love the 2nd Ave. Farmer’s Market. It’s a great way to get out and patronise some local businesses/families, get some great food, and enjoy the nice weather(weather permitting. Hah!!). I’ve been going for a long while, off and on… for whatever reason, it usually takes me until September to get around to going(I’m sort of slow on the season changes or something). But I love to go and hang out with friends, walk around and look for some high quality produce, etc. I really, really recommend going. It’s a lot of fun and it’s a good chance to get out of the house for free and look for some shopping you can’t really find anywhere else. Plus, they usually have live music and it may be the most exciting thing going on in Upland between Spring and Fall. Go, take the kids and have a nice evening out with the family(or friends.)

Baked potato night!!! Technically, it kind of is a lame farmer’s market, but Upland isn’t a very big city so it’s to be expected. Like anything, though, it’s got its gems. On the south side of the square, next to the tri-tip vendor, are the best baked potatoes(or yams, if you’d like) around. The husband and wife running it are fantastic, super friendly, and they know just when we’re going to show up. Potatoes are a flat $ 5, roasted corn is $ 2.50, and they’ve got a lot of fixins. There are few locals that I’m as happy to support as these folks. We go every week. Also, on the west side of the square, I pick up some strawberries each week. $ 5 for three baskets is pretty tough to beat, and they’re normally very good. There’s a huge selection of fruits and vegetables, but the fruit juice vendor is absent this year and I miss him. Unpasteurized apple cider and orange juice, om nom nom nom nom! There are a lot of janky little booths set up, anti-aging and crystals and incense, whatever. FARMER’S Market, people. FOOD. Also, the dentist setting up the loudspeaker each week needs taken out back, that guy is awful, does karaōke over top of the plain recording and then makes an awful pun.

For close to 20 years, this Farmers Market has been a Thursday night staple that runs for the duration of daylight savings time. Located in downtown Upland, this event’s hub is the gazebo, where they usually have a band or dj playing music for the attendees to enjoy. Every year, I try to go 1 or 2 times, just to support my hometown. The last couple of years, it seems like there have been fewer and fewer vendors, which is a shame. I’ve noticed that the event seems to attract a large number of teenagers that want to use it as a chance to hang out, which personally is a dis-incentive for me to go. When I do go, I make it a point to get the bacon-wrapped hot dogs, corn salsa salad from Margie’s Shuck Wagon, tri-tip sandwiches, and funnel cake. I’m a glutton. I can’t help it. Leave me alone.
