Fried catfish and shrimp with cabbage and collared mixed was awesome, probably wouldn’t get the gumbo or dirty rice again. I will definately frequent here again…

Dined her yesterday. Pretty good. VERY friendly. Owner come around and ask about how everything is going. Food is fine but very salty! High blood pressure people may want to pass this one over! Overall we would be sure to come back. Nice to find a place to eat that is a bit different from other dining establishments.

My family ate at pappy g’s and it truly needed salt. There was one waitress and it took forever to get our drinks let alone the food. I think the food would have been tolerable if there was just more salt.

Our son-in-law recommended this place and now we are mad at him for not telling us about it sooner! LOL! My husband and I both got catfish which was delicious. Our sides were mac & cheese(perfect), yams(excellent), cole slaw(a little soupy but good) and gumbo(very tasty). The corn muffins and sweet tea were also good. We were not disappointed in anything. Pappy and the staff are very friendly. We took home three mini pies which we have not yet tried. We had lunch there yesterday and we were so impressed, we are taking the whole family(party of 12) tomorrow!

Brace yourself for the rambliest review, still in a good food coma from this place :) Cons Sticky carpet, rip that out! Staff wants to hang out in the back, as a waitress i get that but it was annoying having to wave at the owner just to get ketchup. The server(carla’s son but i didn’t get his name) only came out when he had to and disappeared not a big smiler either, he did refill our drinks tho. Um the tables has vinyl on them so as an artist i thought it was a fun idea but not well done, the edges were lumpy, rough, not quite sticking under the table. But easy to ignore. My sister didn’t like the chairs, i didn’t notice them other than i couldn’t hook my bag onto it. She also wished the staff were a little more professional and uniform. There were two other people, she guessed they were just friends of the owner. My little brother, picky picky, liked it :) he just wished it were a little more modern looking. Mkay now. Pros Soooo sweet. The people and the swamp water :) i love that the owners check on you and that she was available to get my little ketchup asking how our food was, good! :) my mum thought the yams were too sweet(but they were the first thing she finished lol) i enjoyed the thanksgiving yam taste. My sister noted how things taste — really — sweet and said the fried corn was kinda lardy. she wouldn’t go back again. I found the swamp water refreshing. The lemonade was too sweet but i liked the tea. If that wasn’t clear swamp water is just tea and lemonade, so don’t be afraid to try it. My mum loved her chicken and collard greens(it outbeat her beloved KFC) I was looking forward to the mac & cheese but it was too peppery! Barely tasted the cheese! The ran out of dirty rice :( I reaaaally like cold water sea food and grew up on it when my dad would travel to Alaska, so the shrimp was too earthy for me but yummy all fried and with. Ketchup I did not like the gumbo but my sister did, we had a cup. The prices are good i defiantly recommend giving this place a shot. He(Mr.G?) seems to be famous for his BBQ which we didn’t try. The wings they have are huuuuge :) order yourself a plate and you wont be disappointed Oh and the hot cornbread… One… Tiny piece for each person at the table. Okay. :p Anybody else miss Marie Calenders?

If you like good old fashioned comfort food done right, then this is the place for you. It’s as if Pappy G took the best of what my mom made when I was a kid and made it even better. My mom would consider that blasphemy, but it’s true. Pappy G’s serves better food than my mom did. My mom just called me and said I’m out of the will. Thanks Pappy G’s. Now I’m never going to inherit that pie recipe. But that’s ok, your pies are better. My mom just called and disowned me. That’s ok. Who needs a mother when you have Pappy G?

Highly recommended by family friend however our experience today was not so tasty the shrimp and fried fish were chloriney, the orders were unorganized and slow to come out, the server was explaining the cooks lost order slips. Fried chicken wasn’t seasoñed We were a family of 12 looking for a good Sunday meal for my moms 60th bday

I just tried Pappy’s for the first time and I will definitely be going back again for another meal! My boyfriend and I love soul food and have been looking for a good replacement in our area, since Mama Lee’s closed. After reading all the reviews, we figured we had to try it, and there were no complaints between either of us I had the smothered pork chop, which fell off the bone, it was so tender and delicious, the mac n cheese and fried okra were served in perfect portions and went along perfectly with my pork. My boyfriend got the fried fried fish and shrimp with fried okra and collard greens on the side. The shrimp had the best flavor and was cooked perfectly, couldnt have been better. The collard greens! Oh my, just everything was perfect… We’ll be going back next Sunday in hopes that they still have some gumbo!

Pappy G’s is some of the best soul food I’ve come across in San Antonio. This is definitely a family owned and operated business, but it is done very well. Everyone here is very accommodating and the food is simply great. If you’re in the area check this place out. It’s delicious :-D Pappy will make you happy.

If you’re driving by Pat Booker or near 1604&35, and looking for a non-fancy great tasting food, stop here! Pappy G’s will make you happy! Their food is southern country kitchen. Tried their cabbage/collard greens combo, baked mac n’ cheese and meatloaf and EVERYTHING was tasty, well cooked and provided a comfort to the belly. I also tried(from my other party) their chicken fried steak(Oh geeze! deliciously crispy and well seasoned gravy and steak), cajun catfish, mashed potatoes(delicious also… salty but not too salty, just like we like them). Definitely coming back here! So much better than those big franchise claiming to have southern home cooking in their menu. :o)

Pappy G’s didn’t hit the country cookin’ spot for me, the hype and photos oversold me. I brought an old friend and my sister along to try this supposedly wonderful restaurant and I found myself apologizing profusely for their inedible meals. I ordered the meatloaf special($ 9+) with a medium gumbo, my sister got the two white piece fried chicken, and my friend ordered the fried fish and shrimp plate. To our amazement, they claimed to be out of chicken fried steaks on a Saturday at 7pm, I knew it would go downhill from there. Our waitress was a bit of an airhead, after telling her our drink order she stayed staring at us for a good four minutes asking for our drink order again. Things that were memorable were the cornbread and shrimp(in gumbo/fried). My gumbo had a major layer of grease and it had an overwhelming lemony flavor to it, I couldn’t finish it. The macaroni and fried corn sides were not fresh and were reheated in a microwave. My sister’s fries were grease soaked and her fried chicken had absolutely no flavor and she was given two wings(why not a breast?). The fish was under-cooked and had a pink tint on the inside. The meatloaf is comparable to an over-salted meatball topped with a spaghetti sauce, no thanks. The brown gravy they use is packaged. We all left with sour stomachs. I did like the music they played and how spacious it was. The cashier that rang us up was incredibly sweet. I will not return.

Fantastic place all around, my favorite is the 4 fried chicken wing special, which I order with macaroni and mixed greens, delicious. Only downside is, it takes quite a while to get served(which they warn you about via a sign on the wall) BUT, they do accept call in orders, which helps due to my 45min lunch. Excellent customer service, friendly staff, I even heard one of the waitress’ belt out a super soulful happy birthday song for one of the patrons once, she had a beautiful voice.

Best soul food I’ve had in a long time! My husband and I tried Pappy G’s for the 1st time today and we’ll definitely be returning. Our server was great & Pappy G is as nice as they come. For starters we each had a cornbread muffin which was perfectly warmed & tasted great with butter. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak, fries and green beans. I had the fish & shrimp, collard greens and macaroni & cheese. Everything was delicious! We’re so happy to have found Pappy G’s on Unilocal

Finally I have a favorite place to eat in Universal City. The sweet tea is perfect. Fresh cornbread crisp outside fluffy inside. The fried fish and shrimp was crunchy and tender, delicious. The greens were amazing, the hot pepper sauce that came with it was a great addition to the flavor. Make sure you look this place up as it’s incredibly easy to miss. I will be back.

Great service. Very nice for a change. Homestyle Louisiana cooking. Family shop. Large portions. Porkchops a little salty but the rest of the food was great. I will come back for the Gumbo, I had the side gumbo for a dollar. Next time I’ll have the largest possible bowl. I saw the pies but no more room.

Once again no disappointment with the food. I’m only disappointed because I forgot to take pictures. The food was so delicious and believe me when I say this, the chicken n waffles is amazing. The one thing I love about this place is their portion size. They definitely give you your money’s worth. Next time I’ll be a little more disciplined and snap some pictures. I was just too hungry.

I came in for lunch on Friday and I was more than impressed with the service and meal. I had the large fish plate with macaroni and cheese, yams and fried corn. The cornbread muffin was delicious and the fish came out fresh, seasoned well and hot. The fried corn was a little runny but also came out very hot. I really appreciate freshly made, hot food. The yams and M&C were warm but not as fresh as the other parts of my meal. I suppose that might have been because I came at the end of the lunch time. The sweet tea was just right and my waitress and the owner made sure that my glass stayed full. The meal was good enough to warrant a return visit during dinner hours so I’m bringing my husband, son and daughter back tonight. I’ll repost afterwards to see if the dinner service can garner 5 starts.

This place is deliciously fantastic. I was in the neighborhood and searched on my phone for a place to eat. Pappy G’s came up and I gave it a shot. I walked in and 80% of the restaurant was black. At that point, I knew I was in store for some good Southern cooking. Good is an understatement. Pappy G’s is damn good! Some of the best homestyle, Southern cooking I’ve ever had. My girl and I ordered fried chicken, chicken fried steak and meatloaf(to-go) and a number of sides. The chicken and chicken fried steak were perfectly crispy and the meatloaf was better than Mom’s. The fried-chicken was some of the best I’ve had in my life. Different than a Max’s wine-dive, this is homestyle. My other experience with good homestyle fried chicken is the legendary Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles in downtown Los Angeles… Pappy G’s was better. The sides were equally fantastic. The yams were the best I have ever had. I don’t even like yams, but would order them in lieu of other sides because they’re that good, cinnamony and texturally sex. The collard greens were fantastic, a nice change for the healthy. The macaroni and cheese and green beans were as good as I’ve had anywhere. My one complaint was that the coleslaw was surprisingly under-mayo’d. But, that’s fine because I needed a touch of health with the plate of cholesterol that was just ingested. I will go back if I’m around the area and will make a special trip for the food when I’m in the mood for some good Southern cooking.

«Inconsistent» is the name of the game here, sadly. My first visit, the food — chicken-fried chicken, cabbage/collards, mash — was phenomenal enough to compensate for the 45 minutes it took for the food to get to the table, and subsequent waits for forgotten sides and various order/kitchen mistakes. Next couple visits, even the food wasn’t remarkable, but the bumbling — though incredibly friendly — service was the same. I’ve been back to Pappy G’s several times, always holding out hope for another amazing meal like the first, but I’m at a point where the meh-to-poor meals have outnumbered the good ones, and it’s a food gamble I’m not willing to pay for any more. Consistent good things: Friendly staff SwampWater — delish tea/lemonade combo

The first thing my wife and I noticed about this place is that there were no skinny customers in here(including us) — so this must be a sign of good food and healthy portions! :) We were right — we both took our waiter’s suggestions and ordered the specials of the day. Meatloaf was one and the pot roast with gravy was the other — we also each got our choice of two sides, so we ordered different items and shared. This gave us the chance to sample more of their menu.(Our waiter — Todd — advised us to try the specials because they weren’t regular items on the menu and were not always available.) Our sides were the fried okra(which seemed very fresh), the mashed potatoes — sehr gut!, mac and cheese(this was ok but not as good as previous reviews have hyped it up to be. The final side that came with our specials was the fried corn. This is boiled corn kernels that are then sauteed with olive oil — very good, but also VERY rich(remember, none of the customers are skinny) :) TOTALLY awesome home cooking and GREAT service! Ask for Todd to serve you if he is there. He is very knowledgeable about the menu and all the food preparation — not to mention the outstanding service he provides! On a side note, this place has been trying to get on Diner’s Dive’s and Drive-Ins — they didn’t make the first cut, but they are still trying — you know places on this show get CRAZY packed after the show airs, so I advise you stop by as soon as you can — also stop by the Diners, Dive’s and Drive-In’s website and help generate the buzz about it — SAT has had several establishments on the show — it would really be cool if we can get another one on there! If they served beer, I would have given them 5 stars — but to each his own. ha-ha! :)
