My review is only based on what I’m guessing is their main seller, the hot dog. Taste was standard, almost ‘vienna’ sausage-like taste. They snap, which I personally enjoy and expect from a quality dog. Size-wise, they fit across the bun. However, the bun was too bulky and unfortunately, stale. Truly disappointing. I believe most people can agree that a stale bun on anything is a meal killer. I honestly expected better from a place that is known for their hotdogs. The take-out window as also standard with a relatively friendly guy. If I return, it won’t be for a hotdog.

Tried to give this place another try. I order one chili dog and one with sauerkraut. The bun was too big and the bread was really stale. Ordered waffle fries which were really tasty but please save your money.

I have patronized Galloping Hill for years and always make it a point to stop there whenever I am in North Jersey. Although my favorite dogs are still Nathan’s Natural Casing dogs, I do love Galloping Hills double dogs with hot relish and their onion rings are outstanding as well!

They’ve been around since 1925, so nothing I say in this review will affect how they do business or likely influence their patrons, but nevertheless, here’s my review: I really disliked my hot dogs(got mustard, kraut, relish). The dogs themselves had snap, but were quite bland. I mean, seriously, no taste. I think I would have preferred a supermarket dog. The buns were WAYTOOLARGE for the size of the hot dog. Seriously, it was like a single hot dog on an 8 inch hero roll. Plus, I came on a Sunday night, and the buns were clearly a day or two old and slightly stale. The sauerkraut and relish were just meh; they seemed like they came from a large food supplier rather than being fresh or home made. I guess I can sum it up by saying I didn’t even bother finishing my dogs as they weren’t worth eating.

Had a double hot dog with kraut and fries. Tons of kraut, excellent hot dogs, pretty good fries. Delish.

I’ve known about this legendary hot dog stand for decades. I’m pretty sure I came here as a teenager, but have little recollection of that probably drunken event 40 years ago. I passed the place by on my way back from a job and simply had to give it a try. I ordered 2 dogs with kraut and fries. The dog may have been good. It had a nice snap to it, but it was hard to appreciate the hot dog under the giant pillow of a roll it was served with along with a huge mound of sauerkraut. I felt as if I was eating a sauerkraut sandwich with hints of hot dog. Seriously, if you have a decent dog, make it the star. Don’t lose it under a massive pillow of bread and a mound of toppings.

They say a picture’s worth a thousand words. Well, Galloping Hill has been photographed on the news, for TV Shows and to show off their classic cars on their Monday night car show, but there are no words to describe the greatness this place. The hot dogs have a great snap to them and go great with a birch beer, both of which they are most known for. Their cheesestakes are not as frequently ordered but if you’re not in the mood for a hot dogs, these are the way to go and are as good, if not better, then the hot dogs themselves. Pizza is a new item to the list and at $ 8 for a pie, it is a great value. The waffle fries are out of this world, too and the workers there have that Jersey, blue collar swagger to them(a bonus). The backside has undergone renovations over the years. When I first used to go, the back side was covered, but opened, so it was not the best place to sit during the winter. However, now they did a great job closing in the space. The kitchen has expanded, it’s climate controlled and the décor is nice(*almost* too nice for this place). The outdoor tables are excellent during the summer too. I have two minor negatives about this place, but they’re not enough to firmly keep it out of five stars. The first is that the hamburgers are average. They’re not bad, but unless you go there a few times, I wouldn’t get them at first. The second is the service. Some may consider the swagger a positive, some may not, but they get your order right and help you along the way. I have been there plenty of times. How many? Enough to have a stack full of their cups that reached my waist in high school. Overall, it’s a wonderful place and would not recommend a better casual restaurant in Union County!

Not very Good. Today was my first time here. We passed it and it did look very inviting. I was looking forwarding to eating what I thought was going to be amazing food. What a disappointment. The hot dogs were horrible. The hamburger was a frozen patty. My girlfriend and I spent a total of 18 dollars and threw away at least 12 dollars of the food. My first and last time going here. I’m sure it was good in it’s day.

This place used to be better — could always count on something fresh in the past… Now half of the stuff is frozen. Their crab cake — the special — was probably the worst crab cake I’ve ever ate and stank of fish. Had two bites and was out of there!!!

I like these roadside eateries, just not… you know – in Five Points. Traffic is hell in this area, especially from 4:30pm and after. However, I was lucky enough to stop by a few hours ago when it was only partially busy and the motor mayhem wasn’t as bad. Hot Dog w/House Chili and Cheese: The hot dogs here are simply boiled – nothing fancy when it comes to preparing them. Their chili has a nice texture, while the cheese was nice and gooey. Flavor wise, the chili itself is pretty basic. It is not salty, herby, peppery – it just tastes like a lightly seasoned meaty chili. That’s fine because the cheese is what adds the saltiness. Someone mentioned the hot dogs here are«gigantic.» I personally think that’s an exaggeration. They seem like normal-sized hot dogs on a homemade and slightly oversized bun. Hot Dog w/Mustard, ‘kraut, and Chopped Onions: I like it, but they added a little too much chopped onion and not enough ‘kraut. The hot dog was lathered nicely with a generous amount of mustard. Other hot dogs I’ve tried are almost always juicy but excessively salty; the ones here are perfect – nice snap with each bite, too. Order a birch beer to go with your meal! Waffle Fries w/Gravy and Cheese: I could snack on these all day if I had to! The waffle fries are nothing special, but the gravy was rich and flavorful, blending well with the melted cheddar cheese on top. You could also get the same thing but with crinkle fries(it’s cheaper, too). You could either eat on the benches outside/near the counter or in the indoor dining area. The indoor dining area has quite a few tables(no booth seats) and a TV or two. I would definitely stop by again for a hot dog or try their wraps. There are plenty of other items on their menu.

You can never go wrong with Galloping Hill. Personally I feel the food is average, but I eat here a couple times a month. Love the buffalo chicken wrap. Wouldn’t recommend the chili, but overall great place. Who doesn’t love GHill? Plus the food is always quick

Classic New Jersey«road side find» ! This burger and hotdog place is busy, clean, casual and, more important, fun. My friend was looking for lunch today and I immediately pulled up Unilocal. He stopped me, saying he knew of a «Dom place». It was Galloping Hill. He had a burger and said it was good… I had two hot dogs with kraut and mustard. Mistake! The dogs are gigantic. One would have been enough. But the dogs had a good«snap» and the kraut was piled high, hot and fresh. The good brown mustard was tangy. Fries were hot and cooked to a golden brown but typical of the breed. Fast service and fair priced. I liked what I had, thought the place was fun and would go back. Another special NJ find. Like an old time roadside stand, alas, in the middle of a crowded town. Recommended …

Joint # 81: GALLOPINGHILLINN, Union, NJ. Galloping Hill Inn is a joint that has been at the same location for over 40 years. Prior to becoming GHI, it was called Peterson’s. The joint serves the usual — dogs, burgers, fries and salads. We got our usual — mustard, onion and chili. RATING(S):… J. Diggity Dog: 7.5÷10, Dog Man Sac: 7⁄10. J. Diggity said, «Thumans*. Flat griddle top. What I’m going to say with this, the bun was way too much. It was pretty much a deli-type, sandwich bun. Dog was good. Chili had some spice. There was a lot of onion. And even know that bun was huge, stuff was falling out. It was way too much bread for my liking. I’m going to go with a 7 and a half.» *NOTE: correction: 6/1frank with natural casing made by Grote & Weigel, based on recipe from Gaiser’s pork store. Dog Man Sac said, «Ridiculous bun and it was also stale. It was not fresh tasting and it filled you right up. The dog was good. It was flavorful. John made a good point, ya know… the chili did have spice. I am a 7 for Galloping Hill Inn.» — The Dawg Tour

I come here every so often with the work group, for the past 8 years or so. I usually get the hot dogs, and they’re fine. The buns are kinda huge though, so it does overpower the dog, but it’s still good. I’d probably give it 4 stars, but I’m agreeing with the other reviews — the more classier they try to make it, the worse they do. The staff is friendly and everything, but I’ve been bothered the past couple of visits — we go as a group of usually 5 to 7 people, which I admit is large, but the food comes out all over the place. Half of the table will get their dogs while the other half sits for their meal. Then the other half gets their meal and the half with the dogs, who got fries or onion rings on the side, are still waiting. So even if I wanted to eat before my colleagues get their food, I’m still without my side. and if I wait, then the dog is cold. It’s just weird. Oh, and don’t order the burger if you want a *real* burger. If they had real ones, I wouldn’t mind all the other stuff!

Galloping Hill Inn is a great place to stop for lunch or dinner. Their hot dogs are one of my favorite comfort foods in the world. The hot dogs have a nice distinct snap when you bite into them. My favorite options are sweet works, chopped raw onions, or the standard mustard. Make sure to wash it down with the birch beer too! The service has always been very quick. Keep an eye out for special BOGO free promotions through out the year. In all of my years of going here I have only tried the walk up window. They do offer indoor seating with a full menu.

If you want to wait forever in line for greasy ‘bad for you’ food, this is the place to do it! If you want a parking lot that makes no sense and is confusing to get in and out of and yet is on a very busy intersection, this place is for you! I admit, the food is banging. It’s heart-attack-on-a-plate delicious, greasy, amazing food. It’s been around forever, locals love it, and it’s a landmark whenever people are giving directions. That shows just how much of a staple this place is. Try it at least once, it’s worth the trip.

This is my first time here and my fiancé has not been here since he was a child! 3.5 stars I beg to differ! The simplicity of a great dog, kraut and mustard — and the freshest of breads is what earns the 5 stars! Even prior to closing the food was fresh, staff genuinely friendly. Will definitely return, sorry I didn’t come here sooner … Probably because it would be the gym then Galloping Hill!
