When visiting Tuscumbia, Florence, Sheffield, and Muscle Shoals; This should be on the list of places to check out. I happened to visit as part of an conference event dinner(conference was mostly in their banquet hall). Dinner was sent up though out the museum, and I thought the staff did a great job. I though the museum was pretty cool, and they had some pretty interesting exhibits, including a Tour Bus from the group Alabama. I don’t know if they prepared the food themselves, or had it catered, but it was quite good. Fresh Salad, smoked chicken served with a white bbq sauce(Bob Gibson style), fresh veggies, and a nice piece of pie. It is a neat place, and I certainly would recommend as a location for an event dinner.

Being a local we took a group of our kids last summer as fun outing and to learn more about the history of our area. It has a ton of great pieces. With smaller kids they loved to look but the older ones enjoyed reading and hoping up on the tour bus. If you love music and are looking for a great place to kill some time, this is a great spot to stop and vist!

Lotsa fun, some great displays. Not a huge museum, but good size with tasteful displays. Nice 30 – 60 minute diversion. Great staff.

There is no good reason that after a three hour car ride with a ticked off infant that I should have enjoyed this place, especially since I’m not a music freak, but from the hall of portraits to the busts of Alabama encased in carbonite, everything there was pretty fun on both a kitschy and actually interesting level. The paintings there, some are spot on, some make you wonder, they’re all amazing though. I think if you’re a music lover, there’s significantly more there to love(I like what I like and sometimes the museum crossed my musical paths.) There’s a tour bus and a really tricked out gun car along with several display cases, not too much interactive but they have some great paintings and something interesting every couple of feet. I’m pretty sure I was in this museum back in the 90’s and was not a fan then, but that was a long time ago and a me far far away. Make sure to bring an AAA or AARP card for a discount.

This place is really great, but it is in desperate need of funding. It’s getting a bit old– so go visit the place, pay the admission and buy something in the gift shop. If our stupid state government won’t fund it, we must. We MUST.

Growing up in Alabama, I’d listen to a lot of country music. hell, the first concert I ever went to as a young boy was Jim and Jesse and The Virginia Boys. Now, many years later and far from San Francisco, I visit one of the best country music museums around. When you come in the door you have all these stars underneath your feet, each inscribed with a star’s name. Hank, W.C. Handy, Verne Gosdin. they all called Alabama their home. After paying the $ 8.00 admission fee you see a wall of beautifully done color portraits of these same stars. I never knew Nat ‘King Cole was from Alabama nor Sonny James. No duh on the group Alabama though! The museum is divided up into sections encompassing everything from Sun Studios, Muscle Shoals Sound to the blues of Big Mama Thorton and a detailed history/photos of W.C. Handy. In one little corner was Jimmy Rogers guitar, in another, Tammy Wynette’s sparkling dress she wore to the opening of the 1984 Olympics. There’s sheet music, liner notes and lyrics scrawled in pencil by some of the greatest names. In the middle of the exhibits sits Alabama’s first tour bus which you can go inside and Webb Pierce’s tricked out ’61 Bonneville with 1500 pounds of silver bumper to fin. You can spend up to two hours there if you stop and read the info on each exhibit and there’s a nice gift shop after you’ve completed the tour.(I bought a book called ‘The Death Of Hank Williams’, a conspiracy based read.) Be sure to check out upcoming concerts which are played outdoors behind the museum. Merle Haggard is playing this June 14th, I believe. A fun place to learn about some of the most influential musicians from the state of Alabama.
