Coleman Coliseum is the home to the University of Alabama’s basketball and gymnastic’s team. It is located on the school’s beautiful campus. Alabama has some of the best athletic facilities in the country, but Coleman is not included in that group. It is an older arena and the blackish insulation on the ceiling makes the whole interior look dinghy. At some point, I imagine that it will be torn down with new complex taking its place. I’ve been to a few games here and did enjoy myself. Alabama fans are definitely passionate, but their true love will always be football. Basketball games are more of a casual affair. I had a good time taking in the game and chatting with the Crimson Tide fans that sat around me. Unless you are a monster basketball fan or are just trying to see all of the SEC arenas, I wouldn’t make a special trip to visit Coleman. It’s clearly not a priority facility for the university and you can tell that it has been neglected through the years.

Coleman Coliseum, formerly known as Memorial Coliseum(renamed in 1988), is the home of the University of Alabama Basketball team, as well as the school’s National Title winning gymnastics team. Seating capacity is 15,316. Originally opened in 1968, the building used to house the football offices, including the famous office of former Coach Paul«Bear» Bryant(football offices are now next door, in their own building). Coleman is regularly packed for the school’s gymnastics team’s events, as well as the basketball team. The arena has played host to many famous people, including Elvis Presley, Jay Leno, The Grateful Dead, Oak Ridge Boys, Ray Charles, The Beach Boys, and President Ronald Reagan. The arena was renovated in 2009, to include new offices for athletic programs, new lobby(location of UA Ticket Office), and new club seating area. The arena is conveniently located on the UA campus, next door to Football Complex, Baseball stadium(Sewell-Thomas Stadium), and across the street from the Bryant Museum. Features include multiple concessions, plenty of bathrooms, practice gym beneath the regular playing surface, volleyball and gymnastics practice area adjacent to the playing area. Parking is plentiful, and shares a parking area with the UA Law School. The arena can be quite loud during events, with lots of crowd noise, excellent acoustics, signage, but may be a bit lacking in lighting in the seating areas in the upper corners. Overall, it’s a very nice, multi-purpose arena.
