The old convention center was redone a few years ago and is a great venue for banquets, parties and other events. The large room for events opens into the mostly glass atrium. Both areas are spacious and suit big events very well. One downside to having events here is that the parking isn’t so great. There is a lot across the street that we often use, but I have no idea if we’re supposed to. Valet parking is usually offered, but that is pretty excessive for Tulsa, OK.(The parking isn’t great but it’s not THAT bad.) To the side of the main event room is a long hallway with conference rooms and the bathrooms. Overall, the whole building has a spacious feel — I’ve yet to see anyone wait to use the restroom and I’ve never felt like I was jammed into a corner when at an event. The last piece I’ll note is that the food and alcohol service are very good. Many of the events have various drink stations and there is sometimes wine service to the table. We’ve had a whole range of their catering and it’s always delicious(including several tasty desserts). Overall, this is a fun place for an event. The convention center may not sound like anything special, but the remodel has made it into a special place for big events in Tulsa.

Great spot for a convention. Plenty of room for huge crowds of people to fit and still be comfortable.

From an architectural standpoint, downtown Tulsa has a number of interesting buildings. It seems that much of the downtown seems to have been erected in the 1920 – 1930 time period following an oil boom. This would explain the high percentage of art deco buildings that adorn the skyline here. And the convention center seems to be a nice example of 1960 architecture. Which is a kind way of saying that it’s sort of dated. To be fair, the halls have enough space, but there’s not too many other positive points to be had here. There aren’t too many amenities here, although it is easily accessible from the downtown hotels(i.e. it’s a short walk). In short, the place is serviceable, but not anything that would wow a conventioneer.

I spent 3 days attending a trade show here. The convention center is kind of dated… if I had to guess, it was built in the 70’s or early 80’s and may have added an extension or two between now and then. The layout of the place is kind of confusing and there was no restrooms in the main exhibit hall. As a matter of fact I thought the placement of the restrooms were a bit odd and out of the way. You had to walk a long way to get to them. The food options here are terrible. We ate boxed lunches served by the convention food service supplier and they were seriously some of the worst sandwiches I’ve ever tasted… it was like a sandwich you would get when you were in elementary school… two pieces of Bread, 2 Slices of Meat, 2 small slices of Tomato, and that was it! One day I decided to try the concession stand… yep, that’s right there was only 1 concession stand for a convention of 3,000+ people… and they served Hot Dogs, Pretzels, Nachos… I can get better food at the concession stand at my son’s High School… seriously. The only thing that prevented me from giving this place 1 Star is that the people who worked here were very nice and the air conditioning worked very well. Will I return? Probably, but only because I have to.
