This place is amazing! Great good and our waiter, Jeremy is great at his job! We came the night before my daughters 5th birthday and they were still glad to put a candle her dessert. Everything was great! I had the spinach quesadilla it was way better than expected!

BEST Mexican restaurant in town. High quality food, amazing salsa, and cool atmosphere. Only downside is the VERY high prices wow!

My wife and I haven’t been here in YEARS so when she suggested it this evening for our 3yr anniversary dinner, I was eager to return. Unfortunately, after our dining experience this evening, I’m confident in saying this is where you should bring your significant other if you’re wanting to file for a divorce or tell them you’ve been screwing around because the food matches the occasion — HORRIBLE. For an appetizer, the wife and I decided on the layered dip which consists of ground beef, guacamole, refried beans, cheese and sour cream. When it arrived, I instantly noticed something didn’t seem right about the appearance and it only took one bite for me to realize what it was. The layered dip i.e. ‘queso’ isn’t even made with real cheese. It is CHEESESAUCE poured from a can. I would expect as much from a school concession stand, but from a TEX-MEX restaurant? That is completely unacceptable! Needless to say, we returned it and had it replaced with guacamole which wasn’t much better because it had very little flavor, seeming to be nothing more than whipped avocado topped with diced tomatoes. I ordered a steak quesadilla for my entrée and when it arrived, I asked the server what it was because it was COVERED in melted cheese, as in you couldn’t see anything other than the cheese. Never in my life have I seen a quesadilla smothered in cheese. Using my fork I cut through the cheese and revealed before me was a soggy baby diaper, or at least that’s how it appeared because the flour tortilla was soggy and any appetite I had was ruined in that instant. So, back to the kitchen it went. The wife ordered a cheese enchilada and requested that it be covered with chile con carne sauce. Care to guess what it was covered with? Any takers? If you guessed CHEESESAUCE that had been poured from a can, you would be correct. She tried to stomach it anyway but was only able to take two bites and that was the last straw for me. A manager approached our table and asked if everything was«alright» to which I replied it most certainly wasn’t, that we hadn’t dined at Abuelo’s in several years and on this night I’m reminded as to why because it’s been an «effing nightmare» from the very beginning. I proceeded to tell him why and his only response was«that’s how we make it», to which I replied«in a Mexican restaurant?» He then asked if he could get me something else and I replied that I just want to GTFO of here. Our meal, if you want to call it that, was comped although we didn’t eat it and we gave our server a $ 10 tip. We informed him that he did nothing wrong and the service was great. Abuelo’s has the décor and theme down perfectly but unfortunately, the quality of the food comes nowhere near matching the atmosphere. Taco Bell does Tex-Mex better than Abuelo’s, and that is truly pathetic.

We’ve been 4 times now and found the food to be very good each time. The bacon wrapped shrimp dish was excellent, the three salsas were tasty and the gluten free menu was handy! We’ve tried other dishes and have not been disappointed. Will return. A coworker recommended it to us. Worth a trip!

We have eaten here twice, both times we have come for visits from Florida. All I can say is I sure wish we had this in Panama City, Fl. Food is delicious and service is always the best. If you in town please visit and enjoy this restaurant.

Decent Tex Mex given the fact that you’re not in Texas. Can’t hold a candle to places further south but still good. Service is top notch.

I just can’t get past the service. Our host was always smiling, checking the table, recommending some good things to eat and drink, and frankly turned me completely around on my Abuelo’s attitude. The food came out really hot and every order was spot on. They bring out a sampling of three sauces and then you let them know what you liked and they bring more of those. A special request sauce was the habanero sauce and it was very popular at the table. The margaritas that we ordered came in their own shaker which was convenient for keeping them cold. The shots of tequila were generously poured. And, the water was kept full. Their chips are very thin and were replenished as needed. My one complaint is that they have gone to these little screens on each table. They are at least for paying your bill if not other uses, I didn’t like them. I kept getting distracted looking across the room. It was like trying to watch a concert while everyone in front of you has their phone held up taping the show. Maybe I am just getting older, but this was just one more thing taking up space on my table. I will definitely be returning soon, and I certainly hope we get the same server.

Abuelo’s is fine, but nothing to write home about. If we are in a group and other people want to go there, that’s totally fine. But we definitely wouldn’t choose to go there on our own. There is far better Mexican food in Tulsa. The restaurant is big and open with high ceilings. The décor has a courtyard feel. The service is good and fast, always friendly. They bring you three types of salsas to begin(mild, verde, and hot) and then will bring more of whichever one you like best. The variety is nice but all three are pretty lacking. I ordered the taco & enchalada from the lunch menu. It was good, but again, nothing special. The portions are generous but for the price, I would expect something that tasted better. To pay, you swipe your card on a little computer at the table. I’m sure this is the direction more restaurants are going but I still found it odd and impersonal.

We love Tex-Mex and Abuelo’s is the best(except some restaurants in TX, etc). We’ve been to the one in Rogers, AR many times and one in Wichita Falls, KS and now this one in Tulsa. Our family has really enjoyed all the food we have eaten at all locations– including this one. My husband and I really love the enchiladas– I think the shredded beef is amazing.

Abuelos has the theme down, but the food not so much. Honestly, this is a place I would pass on if I was in Texas looking for Mexican food(even if it is a Texas chain). First impressions are good when you are seated. You get a variety of salsa from hot roasted red to a sweet green salsa. There are an abundant amount of menu options with some being a bit pricey for what you get. Abuelos concept I think is more of a modern twist on Mexican food. There is nothing wrong with that, but after several visits the food here just misses the mark somehow.

I so upset to have to write this review because in the past, which has been awhile, I have always liked this restaurant! But I will never be returning again! My meal was disgusting, seriously tasted like throw up spaghetti! It was suppose to be grilled chicken and mixed veggies on angel hair pasta with a light cream sauce. The meal looked ok, but considering the fact I ended up sick to my stomach later in the evening after only having 4 or 5 bites says something! The queso was also Sub-par! The only decent part of the whole experience was the service!

The walls and atmosphere tell the story of Spanish conquest. The Old World meets the New World, and of course, the New World conquered. It’s a story that is important, not because we should extol the virtues of Spanish civilization, but because it happened. Now for the food. For a chain, and even if it wasn’t a chain, the food is superb. The most excellent freshly made flour tortillas on the planet. Near perfect rice and a good blend of Mexican flavors that are distinct and complementary. It’s a place where you can get good Mexican food and chill out. I’m all about the hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint, but when I don’t mind being around stuck up south Tulsa urbanites, I come here and I really like it.

Excellent meal and service. I had the chili relleno and chicken enchilada. It was delicious. For dessert, I had flan which was out of this world. The server was excellent. Checkout was a snap with their Ziosk. All in all — great experience.

For our last night we had planned to go to El Rio Verde again, but had kind of gotten tired of driving around. We wimped out and ate at Abuelo’s near our hotel. This is the kind of big commercial place that we usually give a wide berth. We entered with fear and trepidation. It is big and it feels very commercial. El Rio Verde it is not. They serve three salsas. The green tomatillo includes crushed pineapple, which I did not want in my salsa verde. There was a mild red and a spicy red. I liked the spicy red which had roasted flavors and/or some chipotle. This was pretty good but had to be eaten with absolutely tasteless chips. I have started calling this style of chip, fried paper. We both ordered enchiladas(2). They are accompanied with a lot of rice and a stingy order of beans. My enchiladas were shredded pork that they call carnitas. They are not carnitas, but were not bad. The pork was moist and seasoned well. They were enrobed in a salsa verde that was billed as Santa Fe style. That comparison was also a stretch of the imagination, but again, not bad. Ms T went gringo with ground beef, always hoping for some well-seasoned carne molido. She did not really find it here rating the enchiladas 2−½ stars. They were in chile con queso which was orange colored Cheese Whiz with a tiny bit of green chile. Our meal was not a disaster and in fact was a little better than expected(for me that is) on the strength of the spicy salsa, the shredded pork and the salsa verde. I recommend visitors to Tulsa Mexican restaurants track down the little places like Tacos El Rinconada or El Rio Verde. Abuelo’s is a weak three stars.

I’ve been coming to Abuelos for YEARS! For the longest time it was my favorite. Before the new paint job and three different salsas, it was always excellent. I always assumed they fell under new managements and had changed cooks. The food just isn’t what it used to be. And I know because I tasted it at least once a week five years before the change over. In the past four years since, I’ve been four times or so. I’m literally so disappointed. Every. Single. Time. The flavors that USED to be in the dishes are gone. It’s often over-cooked and incredibly greasy. Every time I see Abuelos now I just want MY Abuelos back. Now, the Salsa is good, but I’d go back to their single, excellent, salsa choice in a heartbeat. I mix a spoonful of the roasted(hot) salsa, a spoonful of the pineapple verde, and two spoonfuls of the«original» and I enjoy it. The queso also used to be my favorite, but the recipe is different now and it has fallen from its slot. I know, I know. I’m just stuck on how things used to be – but they truly used to be good and have fallen so much since in my opinion. The staff is always, always friendly and attentive and the décor is laid back and casual.(I love the sky-like ceiling.) Lighting is romantically dim in some areas of seating. Over all Abuelos is no longer my first choice.

They start you off with chips and salsa(three different types too!) but you must try the guacamole it is delicious! We also had the Queso dip. It was okay, but I prefer mine a bit thicker and spicer although theirs did have a good flavor to it. I went with a group of 9 and the service was great and quick! I had the Grande Sangria Swirl(sangria swirled with frozen margarita) and that was a good drink. There are sooooo many menu options here I had a hard time choosing, but I ending up getting the Enchilada Itzel with beans and rice. It was piping hot and very tasty! If I hadn’t filled up on chips and salsa I would have cleaned the plate! Aside from the great food the restaurant is really nice and festive inside.

I went to Abuelo’s on the recommendation of a co-worker during a recent business trip to Tulsa. Their outdoor patio is wonderful — lots of shaded tables, a great place to sit and enjoy the warm weather. Our party had a variety of dishes and I tried one of their salads. Everything was excellent, especially the light green salsa they put on the table with their chips — amazing! I’ll absolutely come back to Abuelo’s, next time for dinner so I can try one of their specialty margarita’s!

Honesty is key. so here’s my review. My fiancé and I was having a date night and was going to Texas Roadhouse for our dinner. Once pulled into the parking lot it was so full(which is no surprise) people were parking in the shopping center parking lot. We then decided were not doing that, so let’s go somewhere different yet close. There it was Abuelos. big and yellow. Even though I had never eatin there before my fiancé has & had been saying to again so I gave in and am very glad that I did just that. Same price as any other nice restaurant. Was in the $ 30 range for 2& w/out appetizers. Was very delicious and fresh, & the ambiance was relaxing and made you feel like you was on a date and was not loud or dirty. Im so glad Texas Roadhouse was full because I wouldn’t of tried out this restaurant and been more satisfied then going to Texas Roadhouse. Will definitely be back again very very soon!
