What can I say about Johnny’s Complete Foods that hasn’t already been said? Well, everything apparently! This little hole in the wall«grocer» sits in a neighborhood near the El Rio center. It’s where you go to get a cold 6-pack of brew, Ding Dongs and toilet paper, and also features an amazing collection of «water pipe devices» for sale. The shelves are musty and things just look old and, well, not safe. The real gem and the reason for writing about Johnny’s though is it has a Chinese take-out eatery. And the food is good! I admit I’m skeptical of the cleanliness of the store but the guy who is back there seems to have his act together and features a delicious lunch menu of items for around $ 5 including orange chicken and heaping amounts of steamed white rice. In the evening(he’s open every day but Sunday) there is all kinds of Kung Pao chicken, bean curd, shrimp, broccoli and beef, and vegetables and noodles. The sweet and sour soup burns and scalds my mouth. The food always tastes top notch and I’ve never had a problem with it. The store itself is yucky and often have to deal with bums begging out front. But for good local Chinese food, I will hit Johnny’s.
