The Sawtooth Trail has a little bit of everything for just about everyone. The opening 2 miles make for a fun family hike, with a couple of interesting stopping points. The next 3 miles will take you through a winding up-and-down adventure through pines and manzanita, with some technical rocky sections. After the long switchback you will be back to the road(006), and ready for the most beautiful sections of trail. Oh, did I mention that I use this trail for running? There are many who mountain bike this area, but I think that it is best explored on foot. I challanging series of short climbs and twisting turns will keep you on your toes, and the scenery will keep you charged. One of the great things about this trail is that it can be broken down into sections. Do the short loop(back on road 006), at about 3 miles, the mid loop(back on road 006 at your second opportunity) at about 8 miles, or the whole thing at about 10! so much fun. If you have done the whole loop and are looking for more — add on the«powerline» trail up the the top of the mountain. Great stuff!

9 mile loop through«high desert and Jeffrey Pine Forest. It gains and loses the same 200 feet numerous times throughout its course.» It’s a good trail for beginners — I was okay and this was my first time. Of course, there were times when I feared for my life, but it was cool. It scenery was nice when you ride through the forest. However, the viewpoint wasn’t very good as it overlooks the road. In any case, the scenery doesn’t matter since I was so focused on watching the road in front of me in case I hit random rocks /rough patches. I definitely feared for my life at some point. There’s a lot of inclines so be prepared to work out!!! I did get off my bike and push it uphill /through scary parts when I got to tired towards the end. Half way through the loop, I took the short-cut and went down the gravel road that led me back to the parking lot. It was glorious to go down hill with the wind rushing past. Directions to Trailhead(from website): From Downtown, head east on Brockway Road. At the first light(Palisades Drive) turn right. Turn right again on Silver Fir, and then left on Thelin.
