One of the best BBQ meals I’ve had(including Austin, Raleigh, St Louis and other parts South). 12 hour smoked dry rubbed St Louis style ribs were pink and juicy. Chicken was delicious. BBQ beans were just that. Tasty tangy slow cooked collards. 5 different regional sauces. Forget the other places in/near Williamsburg. Drive the extra 5 – 6 miles for real Q.

Dropped by last week(March 21st). Place is closed and is under renovation. It is also under new management which probably means a change in the menu. Estimated time of opening is May 15(2013).

This is a wonderful place to stop at on the drive from the Richmond airport to Colonial Williamsburg. Excellent BBQ, lots of good sauces. My husband loved the brisket. I the pork BBQ sandwich. A highlight are two of the sides: collards and very special, lightly tomatoey blackeyed peas. This restaurant is a very good value, very nice New Orleans theme. A great stop.

Ok … I’m confused as to how this place managed to be rated so high. Let me first say that my one star rating was solely on the food! The location was fine, ambiance was exactly what I expected(nothing fancy) and although our server wasn’t overly excited to be at work, it’s all good! Now, we decided to order the«Hog Wild» so that we can have a variety of food … Not sure if that was the right thing to do. The best thing was the apples(they were absolutely delish). None of the meat was seasoned or had any flavor! The chicken was dry, dry and dry! We had to smother with sauce so that we could eat it. The ribs(although not dry) lacked flavor. I mean none! And the sausage … Hubby said it isn’t «smoked sausage», it’s like Italian sausage that was smoked. The fries weren’t bad … Just put some salt and ketchup and you’ll be good. The cheesy corn bread thingies weren’t bad … Just a lil dry and lacking flavor. So to sum this all up … If you enjoy food without flavor or seasoning this is your spot BUT if you prefer your food to at least have a lil salt and pepper … Pass it right on by!!!

A friend and I got takeout from Hog Wild today. I was only in the place for a minute so I can’t comment on the environment, but I dug the food. I am more of a fan of BBQ that is already sauced, but for BBQ I had to add sauce to, this was right up there. The slaw complimented the taste of the sauce and meat, which in my opinion is key. I got the 1lb of brisket for 10 bucks, which is an excellent price, slaw and fries. The brisket was super tender and enough to make 4 sandwiches if you wanted. For 10 bucks I am loving that all day! Definently recommend if you are heading up of down rt 60 in the New Kent county area.

This is my favorite kind of BBQ place: perfect-sized portions, no frills, low prices, great sauce. I got the pulled pork sandwich and it was excellent. The Jazz-Q sauce was my favorite, but they put out 5 sauces for us to try, which was awesome. The ribs were good too, as well as the fried shrimp. My only beef(haha, food pun) with the food was the sweet potato fries. I love sweet potato fries, but these were sprinkled with brown sugar which made them way too sweet. They were almost inedible, and I had to brush them off and douse them with ketchup to enjoy them, which was a total bummer. This really is one of the better restaurants in town. You can’t beat these prices for this quality.

Came here while visiting family in Williamsburg, and we wanted some good BBQ! This is sort of a hole-in-the-wall, but I’d definitely go back. The prices(in comparison to DC) are amazing– under $ 8 can get you pulled pork or brisket sandwich with a side(fries, sweet potato fries, collards, etc). This is definitely not the pretties of places, but the service was great and they were all really nice. Some great beers on tap(glasses or pitchers), and lots of sauces to choose from for your meal. Other than BBQ this place specializes in New Orleans-type food, which I’m excited to try next time we stop in there. I’ll definitely be back to try more things on the menu next time I’m in the area. They also have brunch, I’d be interested to see what’s on the menu!

5 stars for food, 3 stars for environment. It’s a roadside diner, and not some touristy all-chrome with a jukebox diner. It’s a real diner: the floor is lumpy and carpeted, the table a bit sticky and the interior planning seems minimal. On the plus side, whoever works the smoker absolutely loves what they do. I had the brisket, and it was a decent cut of meat treated with love and affection. It cut with a fork, and I found all the BBQ sauces to be an insult to the beautiful, meaty/smoky flavor that had developed in the brisket. I tried all the sauces in the ‘6-pack’ they give you, just because they sounded fun. And they were, the Tabasco-based variant and the mustard-based sauce were my favorites, but all were worth a try. My cornbread was just the way I like it: unsweetened and ugly. This did not come from a mix, it came from somebody’s grandma’s recipe. The BBQ beans were too sweet for my taste, but also clearly created with love. I’d go again in a heartbeat.

Okay so maybe this isn’t the fairest review of this place as I had only gotten the beef brisket to go, but nevertheless I found it to be very underwhelming. While the brisket was quite tender and juicy there was no flavor to the meat and their BBQ sauces did not help the situation. Their standard, «grocery store» sauce, was too watery and not very flavorful while their spicy version was basically just a mildly spicy version of their standard sauce. The below par sauce coupled with the okay brisket made this place just meh on list of BBQ places.

This is authentic BBQ, and well worth the drive away from the tourist district. Our family enjoyed brisket, chicken, pulled pork, and ribs, all of which were excellent. The ribs were as good as my own, and I hate to admit it but the brisket was better! I had a fish chowder that was full of meat and perfectly seasoned. All of the BBQ is served without sauce, and there are 5 different sauces on the table so that you can choose what you like most. By the way, don’t miss the onion rings. They are the best I’ve had. The menu also has a variety of non-BBQ items for those who prefer their food without smoke.

THISPLACEISTOPNOSH!!! Our order: pork BBQ sandwiches with sides of steak fries, sweet potato fries, cheesy corn muffins, collard greens Food: This is the BESTBBQSANDWICH that I’ve had yet! The pork is so tender and smokey. What’s more is that Hog Wild Smokehouse manages to make their bbq so good without overloading on the soppy bbq sauce! In fact, there isn’t a trace of bbq sauce used in their recipe. I think it’s dry rub bbq. Though with the 6 different bottles of bbq sauce they provide(arranged in a cardboard six-pack of beer – cute. kidding.), you can dress up your bbq sandwich as sloppy and soppy as you’d like. The steak fries were really good – thick, soft inside, crispy outside. The sweet potato fries were slightly candied and also delicious. I love corn muffins. You could really tell the collard greens were cooked in cider vinegar for 6 hours. Everything was great! Service: Very attentive and helpful. I asked our waitress for recommendations on just about everything – entrees, sides, desserts, and she gave us great suggestions on everything. Tip: If you have room, the pecan pie with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream was a sweet note to end on.

Best dry seasoned BBQ I’ve eaten. Dry BBQ is the true art of BBQ cooking. The meats are seasoned and cooked dry(with out smothering in BBQ sauce). When the meal is served the dinner adds their favorite sauce. Good dry BBQ is the hardest BBQ to master, primarily, because you have to keep the meat moist and can’t mask the cooking by drowning the meat in BBQ sauce. Hog Wild does it right: yummy! Eaten here a few times and no complaints. Best menu item is the slab of ribs. The smoked turkey leg is also great and something you don’t see so often. Nice beer list. This is a great family dinning venue. This is a great road side restaurant who’s honesty, hard work, and spectacularly unassuming food matches any five star restaurant in DC. Inside seating and a quaint outside patio. It is only a short hop of I-64. WELL worth the detour. Also, if you look at the map and note my comment below, route 60 is a pleasant diversion from I-64. (Separately, if you want to add some additional spice to your drive on I-64, take route Route 60 between exits 205 and exit 231. Route 60 parallels I-64. Route 60 is a Nice 4 lane state highway most of the way. Gets you off I-64 for a bit. West of exit 205 there are a lot of lights on route 60. Just off exit 231 is where route 60 meets with route 30 so you spent a few minutes on route 30. Since route 60 is a 4 lane state route(and no one is on the road) you make good time. Great break from 64 and some interesting sites, stops, and restaurants. When I drive back and forth(east or west) from DC to Norfolk, I always take route 60. The hard part is whether to have BBQ at Willie’s or The Hog Wild Smokehouse, both are on route 60. I stop at Willie’s(4 star) if I’m in a rush and at Hog Wild(5 star) if I have time to sit. Both restaurants are close to I-64 and great eats.)

The person who gave this establishment THREE stars does not know what they are talking about. My husband and I had the alligator bites appetizer. We had never had alligator before and found it to be somewhere between chicken(mild flavor) and clam strips(chewy consistency). Hubby had the ribs and I had the pulled pork. Ribs had a dry rub applied to them and did not need sauce at all. The pork came dry so it was nice to be able to try their five different barbecue sauces on it. The baked beans were fantastic and the greens were the best we have ever had. Definitely worth the 20 minute drive from the hotel we were staying at.

Tucked away far far down Richmond Road. It kinda hits you from no where so be prepared for a sharp stop. Well worth the journey! It’s pretty far away from the touristy destinations of Williamsburg but it’s well worth the drive. To me, the BBQ is far superior to that of Pierce’s and many of my friends agreed. I’ve been here, twice, once splitting the Hog Wild(which is really big enough for 3 – 4 people) and the other time getting the Pastalaya. Lunch time there was relatively no wait; the other time I went on a Saturday at about 7 and had to wait about 20 minutes. Each time the service was pretty good and the food is amazing. Get the turkey leg if you are getting the Hog Wild – it’s nice and juicy with a well-smoked flavor. The ribs also had a similar taste. The sauces were a little bland, however. The mustard one was overpowered by the mustard taste… two of them were very good. I think the Jazzy one and the Bayou Boogaloo? The Pastalaya was absolutely amazing the next time I went. Sausage, shrimp, onions, and green peppers sauteed to perfection and cooked with noodles in a cajun creamy sauce – topped with a crawfish cake. I didn’t think I could finish it but it was just too good. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting or staying in Williamsburg.

This place is an interesting combo of southern ribs and Louisiana style cooking with alligator/gumbo etc. I think their sauces are delicious, they have a variety, some vinegar based ones, some sweet thick ones, a mustard one, and one made from Tabasco sauce. I usually end up with a little palette of sauces all over my plate. The brisket(I use a vinegar sauce), ribs(I use a sweet thick sauce), and chicken(I use the mustard sauce) are all delicious. Their cheesy corn bread muffins are hoarded by my boyfriend. Their beans have a smoky rich flavor which is way better than anything that comes out of a can. You can also save money if you follow them on Facebook, so we use that as an excuse to get more bbq!

Had the«all you can eat rib night» here on a recent vacation in the area. For $ 16, you get as much slow-cooked, meat-falls-off-the-bone pork ribs as you can handle, and pour on any of six different sauces with different bases(vinegar, tomato). They were a little bit salty for my taste but otherwise fantastic. Sides were great as well — crispy outside/mealy inside french fries, a solid coleslaw, and cheesy cornbread muffins — and I’m now missing the sweet tea I had here. Love the down home atmosphere. It seems they converted an old house into the restaurant. Service was fast and our waitress was friendly. One note on getting here: The restaurant is kind of in the middle of nowhere, so don’t look for it in a shopping center or intersection. There’s a sign along the road though so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding it, but even with the GPS on we were thinking«how can there be a restaurant around here?»
