Sunset Rock is a pretty easy hike that starts at the Giant Forest parking lot and ends at a super cool spot to watch the sunset and look out over the city. I have done this hike dozens of times, but have never actually gone to watch the sunset. I have always hiked to Sunset Rock well after dark to lay out and look at the stars… which I highly recommend. Not only do you get an EPIC view of the night sky, but you also get a beautiful city view of twinkling lights. Bring a blanket to lay out and if the sky is dark enough, you will get a clear view of the Milky Way and I can guarantee you will see satellites and a few shooting stars! If you decide to hike this at night, make sure to bring a good flashlight and some friends… hiking this at night can be pretty scary since the trail goes into the forest and away from the road. You will be in the pitch black. It’s pretty easy to see the trail, plus there are reflective trail markers on some of the trees as you go. The memories and fun stories that come from hiking this at night are priceless!

Went to Sunset Rock this last weekend with a group. It’s a nice simple hike, about a mile I’d guess. It wasn’t very long, but it was worth it. At the rocks, you can go down them a bit. You come from the backside but if you walk out to the canyon you can see down. I did some scrambling. I enjoyed it. We saw some bears to and from Sunset. That was nice for me. I got some pictures. Some of the people in my group got scared. If you start from by the museum, the trail head is to the right a bit and across the street if your back is to the museum. Once you get down to a cross trail, the sign is confusing. It points you to the left but that way leads to beetle Rock actually. You actually want to go up the middle trail. The trail to the right leads to Trail for all Peoples Trail. It’s just a loop, small one. There is a nice little place to sleep(you need to get a wilderness pass) if you go down a bit down the rock. It’s on the left side. It’s V shaped and can fit two people but a tent won’t fit. I’d sleep there though. Last thing. The Sunset was nice. Probably be a nice place to lay out and see the stars. Oh yeah, Children would like to play here but parents need to watch them because they can fall down the front, but besides that it’s one flat rock. Just look at the photo.
