Ogelvies is out of business as of June 2010. I will not miss it. I gave it three tries and each time I wanted to yell at the cook(I will not refer to this person as a chef)

If you want to eat at the worst restaurant in town, by all means eat at Ogelvie’s. Really, you are better off heading down the strip to Applebee’s, or down to Santa Fe to eat at Chile’s. The food here is really faux-southwestern. There are WAY better places to eat in town. Try Michael’s instead.

We found this restaurant based on a suggestion from a valet at a fancy hotel who desperately wanted us to patronize the hotel’s restaurants when we took a wrong turn onto his one way street, on a Sunday night. The waiter, named was Juilo I believe, managed about 30 people. He was a very hard worker and very good at his job. The food came out quickly, we were in and out in less than 90 minutes. Perfect for the atmosphere. The food tasted incredible at this upstairs restaurant, perfect spiciness, fresh ingredients. The sour cream, guacamole, and salsa were cold and the hot food was hot. That’s one other thing, mexican restaurants that either charge more or don’t serve guacamole at all??? They fail. Ogelvies wins. Guacamole on every plate. Don’t think that goes unnoticed Mr. Ogelvie! I had the chimichanga, it was home made, crunchy, and I could have eaten that twice a week for the next two years. Spiced shredded beef in a crunchy deep fried soft shell with a side of sour cream and guacamole, on shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and a few sliced olives. Look at my pictures ^^ it was goooood food. The only complaint was that the TVs were a little loud, but it was a Sunday night Cowboys/Redskins game, so all is forgiven. Although, I couldn’t help but wonder why New Mexicans were rooting for a Washington team…

I like Ogelvie’s more in the winter time when the Plaza is all lit up at night. We mainly went in there to watch sports… I never tried their food. They have pretty good drink specials.

We popped into Ogelvies for a quick lunch during our day trip to Taos. While I can’t say I regret eating here, I’m certain there are better places to eat in town. Don’t get me wrong. If you’re near or on the plaza and are looking for a place with a view, Ogelvies is your place. There’s even a balcony area where you can eat and watch life as it passes by at the plaza and the streets. But we sat inside, given the cool temperatures, and ordered our food. I had the grilled vegetable sandwich, which was quite interesting. It contained tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, and other veggies with some cheese. For some reason, though, the sandwich dripped with oil! I ordered vegetarian in the hopes of eating healthier, but I’m sure I’d have been better off with a chicken sandwich or salad. Staff were friendly but other tables were having problems. A party of six sat near us and received no service, so after five minutes, they left, saying loudly, «Let’s go somewhere where there’s service!» But we had no problems, our food was alright, the location was nice, and we left having eaten a decent meal. I do recommend the grilled veggie sandwich as it did have a lot of flavor, but if you really are looking for healthier fares, definitely go with something else. I would imagine this restaurant is geared towards hungry tourists, and the locals probably know of better places at which to dine.

Lovely place for an afternoon happy hour, unless, as Brian says, the sun gets in your eyes. Great spot to look down over the plaza, decent drink list. We got the veggie quesadilla appetizer and were not disappointed– it was excellent! I’d probably come back, although I’ll admit after learning that Eske’s nearby makes homemade chili beer, I’d probably check that out next. For people watching and ambiance, though, this place is great.

Again, I’ve been going to Ogelvies for years. I’m not a big fan of ‘New Mexican Cuisine’ . I go to Ogelvies for the steaks and especially the lamb. Oh, the lamb.. . Just delicious. The chefs at Ogelvies are probably the only ones in Taos who understand the difference between ‘medium’ ‘medium rare’ and ‘well done’(unlike the people over at Doc Martins who don’t have a clue). My DH likes their Chimichungas and their nachos. Good drinks, good deserts and a great bar. If you sit outside, sit so the late afternoon sun doesn’t blind you. After the sun’s down behind the square, it’s a great place. Otherwise, I sit inside. I really, really like the waitstaff and the décor. It’s the place I take visitors to Taos. I love it.

The outside seating is very nice, as long as the sun isn’t in your eyes. They do know how to make hamburgers, basically. But, I thought my taco salad was more like something I would expect to find at Uncle Earl’s trailer park. It had no beans and just a paddy of hamburger broken up into chunks and spread over iceberg lettuce. No beans, no cheese, no salsa, just some sour cream spread over the top with green onions. Hmmm. On the other hand, the tequila was very good.

Land of Enchantment Boo to mediocre food No no no no no (If you LIKE Mexican/New Mexican food, do NOT go here. If you DON’T, then this might be your best bet in Taos.)
