The Funky Iguana

We LOVE Funky Iguana and always stop in for delicious Mexican food whenever we are in the area. The 3 tacos, rice & beans (!) plate is a super value and SO yummy! In our opinion, Mexican food restaurants can be judged by their salsa… Funky Iguana has a very simple but REALLY good salsa :-) This is a family business and they are always very kind and helpful.
* We love the 3 chicken taco plate so much, it’s hard to order anything else!

I am moving to my new home tomorrow. I won’t be in this area anymore. I will miss coming to the Funky Iguana. This is the BEST Mexican in Tacoma.

Omg! This place is the worst food i have ever had. I would rather eat at Taco Bell and I hate that place. The food was disgusting and I could smell it on me and my family for hours after. Before they moved across the street, we used to go there and it was okay, now it is inedible. My husband had pork and he said it was boiled and flavorless. Art on a plate? Art from Walmart maybe.
Too bad you cant give 0 or minus stars.

Came in to this establishment, fast service, good prices, but when it came down to the food, that was a big disappointment, their chile verde burrito was literally a tortilla and chicken and the chile verde had no seasoning. The chips and salsa was kinda a fail as well cause you can taste the tomato paste in it, honestly I don’t think I could recommend this place to anyone, the only reason I showed up was cause I had a $ 8 off coupon but that’s it, hopefully they find a way to make it more authentic, not to be racist but the good seemed white washed Mexican food

I love this place its one of my faves. Matter of fact Im headed there now. My kids love it too. My food always comes quick. I cant complain.

This is a family run restaurant with lots of room for groups. The salsa is tasty but not hot if that is what you are looking for. Their taco plate is yummy but I didn’t much care for the rice.

Our first indication that this wouldn’t be a good place was how the server greeted us. Be acted extremely out out and threw the menus on the table for us. The salsa was worse than a jar salsa. I ordered tortilla soup and the husband had tacos al carbon. The soup was odd. It had mushrooms in it and the chicken that was inside looked questionable. I pretty much only had the broth. The hubby immediately got a stomach ache after eating a few bites of his meal. I don’t understand why people rate this place as «good Mexican»! It’s more like crappy Mexican, and you hate the person your dining with. If I could give this place zero stars I would. Needless to say we won’t be back now will we recommend anyone to eat here.

I had dinner here recently and enjoyed the Chile relleno very much. It was one of the better ones I’ve had. Service was very good and it seemed to be doing good business while I was there. We will most certainly be back!

I came here with a friend for lunch and we were very disappointed. The interior decorations were very distracting as they didn’t quite go together (it looked like the place was a part time club). The service was horrible. We were seated towards the bathroom and waited about 5 minutes before we were even brought a menu which was thrown on the table in front of us. We asked for water with lemon– the water came without lemon and we had to ask again. It took an awful long time to get our lunch. By the time it came we only had 10 min to eat. The food was very bland– no flavor whatsoever. Now you know– when you’re hungry –any food is ALWAYS good and I came here because the reviews on Unilocal seemed good but this place was terrible. I could have cared less what the place looked like if the food was good but I could have done better by eating some beans right out of a can. I think they used the cheapest ingredients possible as evidence by the lack of flavor. There was only 2 other people eating there and during the busy lunchtime that should have been my first clue. I don’t like that I have to leave such a bad review but it was really bad service and the food sucked too. Try it at your own risk– you’ve been warned.

I’ve been coming to Funky Iguana since they were at their old location across the street.
This is one of my lunch stand-​bys, solely because of their taco plate!
Every day, and I believe all day, you can get a three taco plate for $ 7.95. This consists of three small tacos, double-​wrapped in soft corn tortillas. You can choose from steak, beef, grilled pork, spicy pork, chicken, or beef tounge (!). They have diced onion, and cilantro on them, and are served with lime wedges. You also get rice and refried beans with them.
Optional, but strongly recommended by me is their green salsa. This is much hotter than the red salsa they serve with the chips pre-​meal, but makes a great add to the tacos.
At some point I may actually order something else here, but then again, maybe not!

Food was good new location. Service was friendly, fairly large portions looking for a place a little off the beaten track add this to list of places to try.

The whole family likes the Funky Iguana. Food is good, friendly service, and rarely busy.

My husband and I ate here, the worst mex food restaurant ever, I’m Mexican and I would know. Don’t waiste your money, first of all chile rellenos are made with Munster cheese not yellow American cheese. Grosss

Decent prices, big margaritas and ok guacamole — friendly service. We only drank and snacked while my car was being services across the street but I have no complaints! Really good homemade chips and pretty good salsa, both complimentary.

Great service at this casual location, but the lunch crowd was a bit spare, and that’s never a good sign. Prices were reasonable — but only because the food wasn’t memorable in any way. I didn’t go out on a limb with my food order (chicken enchilada with pinto beans and rice) but I didn’t get the flavor of anything besides the cheese that smothered the entire dish. Although certainly not a sign of «authentic» Mexican food, my personal measure of a good Americanized joint is the quality of the chips/​salsa combination… no dice here.
Too bad, as I’ve heard good things about the restaurant from other people — maybe I need to try a signature dish next time around?

Food is great and the price is super! That being said, the staff was lacking in personality. Everyone seemed as though they had just woken from siesta. The new place is very large, but the space feels … I don’t know how to express it… Clinical and office like. They are clean though, just need to hire an interior decorator.

Want down-​home Mexican food with good, quick service? This is the place. It is home-​made and great food. They do not over-​load you with a bunch of beans and rice and the food is tasty and enough for anyone.
They are moving, probably next week, to a larger place right around the corner.
