Defiance Bicycles

Awesome shop! I was searching for a brooks b-​17 saddle and called a different bike shop in Tacoma and they recommended Defiance Bicycle! It’s a crammed little shop but has so much to offer! The guy working there was super friendly and helpful while I was looking around. I will definitely be going back there as a regular customer.

This place is great! I was rolling through town on a big bike tour from Alaska and needed to get some things looked at before beginning my next legs and the service is outstanding. Everyone at the shop is awesome and were very knowledge of bikes and were super fast. They are also very up front about the costs as well. They also gave me some great advice about possible routes for my next leg of my journey. I can’t recommend this place enough.

This shop reminds me of Sally Hildt’s Magic Spoke on Roosevelt in Seattle, one of the great bike shops.
Not a place to buy Lance lookalike spandex or a plastic bike with USB ports for updating firmware. These folks are justifiably steel bigots.

Super cool little shop. I was in Tacoma and popped in here looking for a used quill stem. I almost left, after seeing the size of the main area, but I asked if they had any used stems. The guy went in the back and brought out a whole milk crate full. Found a great stem in great shape for a great price.

Since my last. I had Chris lace me up a couple of wheels. He IS the best wheel builder in Tacoma. At least. And if you can do wheels you can do ANYTHING to a bike.

Best bike shop in Tacoma. Not only does Defiance have a great selection of new/​used parts and accessories, but knowledgeable friendly service. No other shop in Tacoma has the selection or experience when it comes to fixed gear bikes. I dropped off my bike at 5:45 to have a headset, bottom bracket, cranks and chain installed. The shop closed at 6:00 and I got a call at 6:20 telling me my bike was ready to be picked up. That is how a shop should work! PLUS, Chris recovered my bike after it was stolen. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Chris is an educator. He doesn’t up or down sale. He teaches you about the various products and services and helps match what you need to what is best for you. Defiance bicycles has taken the elitism out of bike shops in Tacoma and that is something that I like a lot!

I went to Defiance Bicycles as part of my quest to find a bike for myself. I haven’t owned a bike since I was a kid and had been to a few other local bike shops. I met Chris and he was exactly the person I needed to talk to. He literally spent an hour talking with me and answering a ton of questions (even though he wasn’t selling me anything). I finally felt more excited about biking than I had after my other local bike shop experiences. I left other shops feeling intimidated about buying a bike and I felt like all the bike experts were into the sport to a degree that I wasn’t planning to match, so the answers I was getting were beyond my scope.
Upon my departure that afternoon Chris gave me his number and email and told me to contact him with any questions I had. He had helped steer me in the right direction and it wasn’t a direction that was making him any money. He is honest and knowledgeable. I encourage anyone to purchase or have their bicycles serviced at Defiance.

Though I live in Seattle, I will always go down to Tacoma for my cycling needs. Totally satisfied with the honest repair work.

For thoughtful, reasonably priced solutions for problems with older bikes this is the best bike shop in Tacoma.
