About once a year I drive from Boston to Toronto, and always stay overnight in Syracuse. Now my stopover must include a visit to the Mission Rose Quiltery(so it’s helpful if I arrive on a Thursday, when they have longer hours). This place is the quilt shop of my dreams — it has multiple rooms of beautiful, brightly colored fabrics, organized by a variety of different themes and categories. There is an entire room just of batiks, and another room that I can’t quite categorize, but seems to include kid-friendly, sports-themed, car-themed, and just-doesn’t-fit-anywhere-else fabrics. The largest room has too many types to describe, but always has Kaffe Fassett prints, and on this trip I noticed a particularly good sized shelf of black & white fabrics. More fabrics, kits and books line the hallways and other spaces(but without feeling cluttered or claustrophobic), and the staff have always been very friendly to me. There is also one room of what appears to be pretty upscale yarn, but as I’m not a knitter I can’t really comment on the selection. I just know that if I lived in Syracuse I’d be at this shop all the time.
