Tenjin is my favorite Japanese restaurant. I have been coming here for about five years for lunch as it it close to my work. I have never been for dinner but I can imagine it’s just as good. The lunch specials are great! So cheap and so much food. The stuffed shiitake is incredible! You must try, even if you’re not a mushroom person. UFO roll is a favorite as well. Steve, the owner, is such a great guy, too. He gave me a bottle of sake for Christmas one year! Always giving us appetizers on the house to try, as well. Fast and friendly service. I recommend to anyone and everyone to try it out. You will not be disappointed!

My wife and I often come here for a lunch date. We love the cozy atmosphere and music. We love the food. My wife orders a variety of items from the menu, including the sushi, the bento boxes & the spicy edamame. I often get the steak teriyaki. The staff are friendly, accommodating, efficient and they always remember us. And they often suprise us with a complimentary sample appetizer(stuff mushroom!). Lunch is a good time since it is not busy.

Steven is so nice. The atmosphere is great. First sushi place where I can actually hear myself thinking without the obnoxiously loud dinner crowd you get at other places(like kotobuki on the south shore) The sushi is always fresh and oh so delicious.

I went after reading good reviews. Most customers seem to know the owner /workers. Food and atmosphere wasn’t impressive. Sushi was not fresh at all. Wondering how they stay in business.

Every time I come here I get a big greeting from Steve and the friendly staff. He’s such a great owner who really interacts with the customers well. The ambience is old fashion and traditional. Makes you feel like you’re experiencing the culture. I usually get the three roll special — spicy shrimp, spicy tuna and spicy shrimp. That’s right! TWO spicy shrimps because it’s slamming with the spicy mayo. This is the only sushi joint where I get to enjoy this combo. Just straight up spicy everything. But wait, there’s more. You also get free fruit at the end of your meal. Wow! Just like how mom use to do. Way to go Tenjin!

Best sushi period. I had the Tenjin roll. It was very fresh and the mango was sweet topped with eel sauce, delicious! Steve the manager was great. He went to visit every table and even brought us out something to try and it was delicious also. I’m a huge fan of this place and will be back again very soon. The ONLY down fall is their hours. They open from 12 – 2 then close again till 5.

My family and I have been going to Tenjin for years and we are never disappointed! We love trying all the special rolls and at this point, we’ve tried most of the menu. My favorite items are the spicy edamame appetizer, pink lady roll, French roll and London roll. My boyfriend always gets the sashimi bento box which is a great value for excellent sushi. The restaurant is clean and has a nice casual to date-appropriate ambiance. Steve is one of the main reasons why my family loves Tenjin. He remembers all of our names(and even my boyfriend’s name!) and is genuinely interested in knowing what’s new with us. He’s friendly without being overbearing and is very generous. Every time we go, he gives us an appetizer or soup on the house and has given my family a bottle of sake every December for the holidays. Even though there are a dozen or so sushi restaurants closer to us, I always go back to Tenjin for the consistently amazing food and incredible hospitality.

I have been here for take out twice. In the fifteen or so minutes I spent placing my orders it is clear why this restaurant is so popular with its patrons: Steve. His interaction with his guests must make them feel right at home. As for the sushi, my first order from here was above-average all around. My second order was extremely disappointing. Sushi rolls were soaked in sauce and mayo and did not smell particularly fresh. After my first visit, I thought I had found my new go to local sushi restaurant. But the honeymoon was short-lived.

Stopped in on a whim for a light bite on a recent Friday evening and were pleasantly surprised by this unpretentious and reasonably priced local spot. The first thing that struck us was just how friendly and gracious the manager and staff are. And based on the crowd that night, it seemed more than just professional courtesy. The whole time there we observed patrons, coming and going, who stopped to chat with the manager or hug him hello or goodbye. He and the wait staff really seemed to know everyone and appreciate the company and the opportunity to help. There’s no end to sushi restaurants in Syosset and the surrounding communities. While others may boast fancier décor or even better choices of specialty rolls, etc., Tenjin holds its own in quality and selection. Of particular note is the pink special roll, which the waitress recommended. Another must try at Tenjin is the garlic and oil infused spicy edamame appetizer, which actually left this edamame avoider longing for more. The glass of plum wine they poured me was delicious and ample. Definitely will return.

This restaurant is AMAZING! You don’t come here for the décor. You come here if you want to be treated with the utmost kindness and for downright awesome Japanese food. I had two sushi rolls and my husband got the Tenjin steak. We were both extremely satisfied! I am definitely a sushi snob and it was honestly some of the tastiest, freshest fish I’ve eaten. We finished our meal with the fried ice cream which was also totally DELICIOUS. COMINGBACKIMMEDIATELY! :))

Customer service is far better than than sushi. As I continue my sushi elitism, I’m again faced with non-Japanese staff making sushi. Call me an elitist racist, but sushi making in Japan is an honored tradition where master of the art are trained for years before they even allowed to place blade on fish. I digress… This joint does it better than most. Their spicy edamame is some of the best I’ve had… Saba it probably I’ve had recently. Americanized rolls seem to be the same crunchy spicy mayo nonsense that drive sushi snobs like me crazy. Salmon skin hand roll had a fantastic taste, a little sloppy drippy… Looking for a nice atmosphere, American sushi, fantastic service you’re set. Looking for a real traditional sushi, join me and look elsewhere.

Honesty is the best policy so here we go. Place is very nice, seats are comfy. The waitress was super friendly but it was the manager who made this a different experience then eating at just any other restaurant. He was so personable and knowledgeable about the food served and was a very gracious man. He really made us feel special, and that is important to me. On to the food and this is where my honesty is coming into play. The cooked food was very good. The spicy soybeans were the best soybeans I have ever eaten, not very spicy but just right. The rock shrimp appetizer was awesome too! The pork dish was pretty good, I think it needed some spicing up but was acceptable. Now the sushi review– I am no expert but even after polishing off a whole carafe of Hot sake which was awesome, I did not feel like the sushi was anything special. I hate to say it because every thing else was right on but something just wasn’t hitting it right with the sushi. The one that I did enjoy was the salmon skin hand roll but for some reason it wasn’t executed well because it was drippy and falling apart. I would come back again but not for the sushi.

It’s homey, it’s absurdly delicious, and it’s my favorite sushi restaurant I’ve ever been too. Steve is the BEST, and he knows all of his regulars — and semi-regulars — by name, and is genuinely interested in their lives. He’ll ask why your brother isn’t with your family this time as he slips you a free plate of edamame. The rolls here turned me from a hater into an obsessor– and that’s just the UFO roll. Canadian volcano, pink special, white special, tuna pizza, avocado cup… I can go on. If you ever need sushi and are in the area, RUN.

I was Unilocaling a couple days ago trying to find a good place for dinner and this came up. Checked it out and I was very happy I did. The staff is great, the food was awesome, and the price is very fair. It was pretty much what I hoped for and I am definitely gonna go there again. The lunch special is also very solid — 12 for a combo box and 10 for most of the other plates.

One of my best friends told me about this place & how she wanted me to try it & I am glad we did because it was delicious; however, it still doesn’t quite compare to my favorite spot in Garden City. I’ve been told that the first sushi restaurant you dine at is usually the one you will favor & although others may be good, they will never compare in your mind. I can see what people mean but I am a real foodie & know amazing food & I know what’s the best when it’s the best! Tenjin is a really good sushi restaurant with great service but I still love my Kaji more! We were greeted warmly by the wait staff & were asked what we wanted to drink upon sitting down & I ordered a small hot sake. Before we ordered our meal we were served a complimentary small plate of two tempura battered mushrooms with krab meat & a delicious dipping sauce which I assume was a hoisin sauce; it was really, really good & I thoroughly enjoyed it even though mushrooms are not a vegetable I care for much. We then ordered the spicy edamame & the Tenjin pizza to start. I LOVED the edamame! In fact, the way they prepare them in a garlic sauce with spice(I would consider them more flavorful than spicy) is superb & I loved them! The Tenjin pizza is tuna on a wonton cracker with scallions & some other ingredients & a drizzle of sauce I couldn’t really identify. Don’t get me wrong, it was good but I think worlds apart from the Crunch Sea appetizer of chopped spicy tuna in between crunchy seaweed wrappers at Kaji. For dinner we shared the Spider Roll, Eric Roll, & Shrimp Tempura roll. My friend asked to create her own shrimp tempura roll with avocado & a bit of cream cheese & I must admit, I was skeptical at first but it proved to be really delicious! I always enjoy the Spider Roll because I love soft shell crab. I would definitely say this restaurant is very good, but it just didn’t strike me as the best. I personally don’t like when restaurants charge for each soda & since my friend ordered seltzer… is it really necessary to pay $ 3 for carbonated water from the soft drink machine? I mean… the sake was a great price at $ 4.25 so that was nice. I’d definitely go back.
