My husband and I tried Bombay Gardens when we first moved here and although the food was great, the buffet price was a bit shocking. The good news is that Udupi Palace isn’t far from Bombay Gardens and even though there isn’t a dinner buffet, the a la carte prices are a steal! If you don’t miss meat at your meals, you have to try this place. A yummy, filling dinner here(complete with Dosa and appetizers) ran us less than $ 30. It is nothing fancy, but go for the food.

Apparently all those that rave about Udupi don’t mean the Sunnyvale location. After consulting Unilocal post-dining experience, it seems as if Berkeley and SF locations are far superior… clearly I dined at the wrong one. Great. A weekend dosa craving brought me to Udupi for lunch. Seeing the filthy plastic menus that were brought to the table should’ve been a red flag to get up and leave. Unfortunately, we stayed. All bad. After ignoring the disgusting menu, I ordered my usual — special rava masala dosa. No idea what was«special» about it, but it’s usually referred to as the onion rava masala dosa at other amazing dosa houses(i.e. Saravana Bhavan). It was simply okay. A couple of notes to management who should be paying close attention to Unilocal if they aren’t already: — Invest in some disinfectant. It really doesn’t cost a lot lot to wipe down your PLASTIC menus and rid them of the filth and grime that is encrusted on there from God only knows how many years of use. — A South Indian restaurant should be serving stellar sambar, not some version of tomato purée with random vegetables. Get a traditional chef. Or get your chef some traditional cooking lessons. — Coconut chutney is supposed to taste like SOMETHING… that something is called coconut. If you dilute it, we can tell. Lesson learned. I will not be back. Saravana is still #1.

Stopped by to experience vegetarian cuisine and while the variety and portions were impressive there was no «stand out» dish. I ate a huge wedge of lime in one of the curries and while that wasn’t so bad it did neutralize my taste buds. I’m sure the experience would’ve been more positive if I had someone familiar with the cuisine to help me or perhaps pictures in the menu. Staff was prompt and courteous. Price was very reasonable.

I visited the restaurant for the first time yesterday after having crossed it a number of times on my way to the Indian grocery store. We were originally planning to have dinner at Madras Café, but there was a huge line there and a friend suggested we go over to Udupi Palace instead. I’m so glad we didn’t wait around! I had the best Rava Onion Dosa in years! Plus, their coconut chutney and sambhaar is also much better than that most south india restaurants I’ve been to in Sunnyvale. The service is great and the guy who sort of manages the place made sure we had everything we needed. My friend was raving about their filter coffee too, but unfortunately they were out of it by the time I ordered. In short, great food. All my friends were happy with their orders too. Definitely go. I gave it only 4 stars since the place has very basic ambience, but the food is definitely worth 5-stars.

This place has tanked from when it opened in the late 90’s early 2000’s. Initially it was awesome. super spicy and bubbling hot food, but something happened in the middle. I recently re-visited this place with co-workers for lunch. and we have a lunch buffet… the food was«ooooook.» We had freshly made masala dosa… the dosa was awesome. crispy and fresh but the«potatoe and onion filling» inside was not fresh or spiced enough… super bland tasting. The Rasam, Sambhar and other cutneys were nastyyy! not spiced well enough… very bland tasting and the other«non-south indian items» were less than stellar. I almost forgot their Masala Chai is a disgrace in the name of Chais! It just tea with mik… cannot even taste any masala… its the taste of yuck!(its tastes like when you keep using the same tea and re-boil again and again and again, it results in a very dry — dark colored tea) All in all if your a South East Asian… and you like your food spicey and hot you can skip this place and save your $$

Came here on a Sunday afternoon and ordered some take-out. First problem, they wouldn’t take cash(really?!?). Second problem, they placed our order and then later told us the item wasn’t available(it’s idly, how do you run out of that?). Third, they were very reluctant to refund our money. Lastly, once we got home, we realized they didn’t give us the correct order of dosa. So, we went to Indian Chaat Cuisine just down the street and got great idly. And we went back to Udupi to get the correct dosa. Never again.

I love this place. I bring all my vegetarian friends here. My favorite is the Masala Dosa and the«Special Rava Masala Dosa» Just wonderful. I love Indian food and this is the best, and it’s great to have a complete vegetarian restaurant. Décor is a little trippy, sort of Greek place turned Indian. Music is typical Indian. Service is weird. It’s all worth it for the Dosas! I also get a lassi to wash it down. My two favorites are Udupi in Sunnyvale and Vik’s in Berkeley. I ate at the Udupi in Berkeley once and wasn’t impressed.

I LOVE Udupi’s food! It’s rare for my entire family to enjoy everything we order, but we did. It is my favorite place for South Indian food, hands down. I ordered the Dosa Combo and chose 2 medhu vadas and one vegetable utthapam. The medhu vadas were exactly the way I like them– hot and soft on the inside, crispy on the outside. The utthapum was delicious and humongous, and I had more than half left over. The sambar at Udupi is also really good, and you can ask for refills on sambar for no extra cost :) Would I come here again? YESYESYES! :D

3.5 stars Got a spinach masala dosa as takeout from this restaurant. Was just walking the doggie in the neighborhood and happened to pass by this place. I asked the gentleman at the counter for a menu and a suggestion for a light dinner. He recommended the spinach dosa. It took them about 10 minutes to put it together and it cost about $ 6. A dosa is like a quesadilla. There’s a filling made of pureed spinach, peas, grilled onions, and potatoes wrapped in a thin flat«bread» like material made of rice. It comes with 2 dipping sauces: something that looks like sour cream and a spicy stew-like concoction. I mixed the two to cut the spice. The flavors were rich and the potatoes were cooked tender. The wrap texture was soggier than a tortilla, however, I did let it sit for a while before eating it. Can’t ding them for that. I liked it overall, but I wish they gave me some utensils since I ordered it to go! It also came with something that looked like dessert. Rice pudding with coconut, but the flavors were just too intense. I couldn’t eat it and ended up throwing it out. :(

There are so many different Indian restaurants to try in the Bay Area and unfortunately Udupi Palace falls at the bottom of my list. I used to come here often to eat dosa and cholay bhatura and started to notice that the quality of their food went downhill. The cholay bhatura(chana masala) is not anything special. I have eaten much better at other places. The bhatura are quite oily and soggy while the spices in the cholay overpower the chickpea dish. I would have expected the dosa to be good but I was disappointed and found it to be very spicy and meager in portion size. The service is not great either. There were multiple occasions where I would ask the waiter to make the dish mild and they could not accommodate my request. Overall, I was disappointed with Udupi Palace due to the quality of of the food and service.

My girls and I dropped in to Udupi a few weeks ago because we were all cravin’ some dosa’s and had heard they had a good rep for them… well, the dosa’s were pretty good but nothing special, and everything else was dreary and slow. First off, the place was dead(only 1 other table but we were later than traditional lunch) and there was no music or atmosphere… The interior was dreary and slow… our waiter was dreary and slow… I had a very blah feeling about the experience. I had to get up and ask for water. I had to get up and get something else too… can’t remember what though. Overall, I won’t go back on my own, but would go if someone else wanted to. There are too many dosa places that have a better overall experience and great food as well. Probably won’t see ya there.
