This salon is quite cute! Everyone is relatively friendly and it’s clean. It’s «lower end» than the standard studio, but over all decent.
Sadly, I am another victim of Irina’s hair bleaching. My hair was BLEACH BLONDE. Like someone poured hydrogen peroxide on my head. I was mortified. After telling her I wasn’t happy with it, she went off about how I was trying to get out of my bill and then was exactly what I asked for. I just paid and left.
I don’t recommend this salon, unless you want to get fried and get charged $ 120 for it.

First time I walked into this salon was almost 8 years ago when I just moved to Sunnyvale and was about to get married. I walked in looking for someone to do my hair for my wedding and Irena helped me set up my appointments to get my hair highlighted before my wedding and on the day of style my hair at some early time in the morning. I was really impressed with the fact she was willing to do that for a new client. I was in love with how she colored and styled my hair. I’ve been going to her ever since: hair cuts, color, highlights and eveytime and I never ever had any issues. She never pushes anything but she also will say if something won’t work either. She knows what she’s doing and I always love my hair when I leave. Even after I’ve moved from Sunnyvale I still go to her. I won’t even consider going anywhere else unless I left the Bay Area.

Horrible experience! Irena was clueless about what she was doing. The chemicals she used on hair completely burned/​damaged my hair.

The beauticians here are all independents and schedule separately. Irina owns the studio and rents to the others: Alexandra and Cindy, plus a new woman whose name I haven’t heard. So, your mileage can vary depending on who you go to. Alexandra is great (and is the only one who does pedicures and waxing as well as hair.) She’s also excellent with color. She deserves a 5.
The studio itself is quite nice, clean and bright. But it is very narrow and when it is busy, it does feel somewhat cramped. (Hence the 4 stars.)

I got a recommendation for Irena from a mailing list and have not been disappointed. I’ve been her client for about 2 years now for haircuts and highlights and my hair always looks great when I leave, but also is easy to style afterwards. Irena is very attentive to my requests and has provided very good advice when I asked her opinion on a hair style.
The place is clean and I haven’t had to wait when I arrive for my appointment.

You can trust your hair to Irena. I’m the type that goes in not necessarily knowing how best to cut my hair, but I am always confident that Irena will know. Been going to Irena where ever she is, and now it’s at Studio FX. Now I take the boys (ages 7 and 10) to her as well. They actually look forward to getting their haircut! Maybe it’s because we don’t take them until the hair starts to get into their eyes, and they begin to resemble old English Sheep dogs, but by then they are making formal requests to see her!
Studio FX is literally her baby and she keeps it spotless. She’s always got a clean stylist instrument at the ready, for example, whenever she drops a comb, it’s like before it hits the ground, she’s already picked up another one from her drawer. Its the constant attention to detail that makes Irena a great hair dresser.
Whenever I call, she’ll always make time for me. She’ll do your do like it’s nobody’s business. Well actually it’s her’s, but she’ll let you know that, and she’ll definitely do it right.

I’ve had my hair done by Irena for over ten years and she’s always done a fantastic job. The prices are very reasonable and she gives very good advice about cut, color, and style. Her manner can be a bit brusque when discussing styling options (kind of like your mother or aunt who didn’t want to see you making a mistake) but her judgment is spot on. At one point she told me to «run away» from a particular conditioner I was using because it didn’t work on my hair. :-) Irena doesn’t just do what you tell her – she tries to make you look your best, and I’ve always come out looking and feeling like a million bucks.
UPDATE: I’ve now been going to Irena for over 15 years, and two months ago, she did all of the hair for my wedding. Flawless, as always. She did an outstanding job with all of the hair lengths, textures, and styling requests from the bridal party. Everybody looked and felt beautiful. Outstanding work, and very reasonable prices. (She really should charge more, but don’t tell her that!)

Irena has been doing my hair and my Mother’s since I was 10 years old. She is in a word– AMAZING! She’s been doing hair for years, and it shows. She fits me in last minute, will stay late or come in at the crack of dawn for me and when I go in it’s like hanging out with a girlfriend.
I like to try new things with my hair, and I often clip pictures I find in magazines for inspiration and when I bring them in to Irena she duplicates the style to a tee. She is very knowledgeable on products and styling tips, she takes her time with me and knows exactly what I want, sometimes before I even know.
I always get compliments on my hair, it happens so often that I carry around spare copies of her business cards to hand out to admirer’s. I’ve never had a bad cut from her or a bad color. In fact, one time when I was highlighting my hair, after wards she felt that I could use a few more streaks. I had booked a surprise color and cut for my Mom for Mother’s Day and when I brought Mom in for her appointment, Irena put me in the chair and added more streak’s… free.
Her prices are very reasonable, especially for the quality of work. I moved down to San Diego a few years back, and never found a stylist there that could do what Irena does. When I moved back up here the first thing I did was call Irena and make an appointment. I couldn’t wait to get into her chair again.
To sum things up, if your looking for a phenomenal hair stylist that will listen to your needs, offer up great tips and suggestions and will take her time with you, Irena is your girl. I can not say enough great things about her. Lastly, her salon is not one of those pretentious salon’s where everyone walks around with a major attitude and cares more about them looking good and not their clients. Studio FX is a laid back, fun, yet professional salon that will make you feel like a million bucks with out having to spend it.

I’ve been a client of Pauline’s for 12 years. When I was a teenager she gave me any permanent, bright, funky hair color I wanted. When I graduated she gave me the cutest pixie cut. When I was in college she gave me a perfect flapper bob. Now she keeps me in my favorite weird/​hip layered razor cut. Pauline can sculpt any hairstyle and make it look better than I imagined. Hair is her art. She may take a little longer and cost a little more than some chop n’ go, but I’ve had ultra expensive celebrity hairstylists butcher my head, and I’m sticking with Pauline Chew from now on. Oh, bring photos of what you want. They’re worth a thousand words, you know.

I have been a client of Irena Rotbart for 10 years. She is very nice, very professionnal, always on time and hard working. The prices are very reasonnable.
I recommend her highly. I drive 30 miles to see her. I never had a problem with colorations or highlight. Everything is perfect! I don’t understand why she has negative reviews. For me that’s impossible. Maybe some jealous people who don’t have clients or who want to steal her clients! She deserves to be respected!
