I had mucus floating on my eyes for about 3 years and by evening I sometimes couldn’t clear it enough with my fingers to read or watch computer monitors or TV. My regular optometrist diagnosed an allergy but that treatment didn’t work. When I reported back to him he was out of suggestions. Dr. Dear will no longer by our optometrist.
I tried another optometrist and Dr. Amy Chi suggested treatments that made the problem manageable but inconvenient. A hot bag of rice over my eyes twice a day along with eyelid wipes would eat about 40 minutes of my day. This treatment was rather relaxing but I wasn’t satisfied.
I looked through Unilocal reviews and decided to try Dr. Karen Shih. She diagnosed dry eyes and attacked with several drugs and treatments, including the hot compress for 10 minutes. She nailed it! While the problem is chronic and will never go away all I need to do now is put artificial tear drops in my eyes several times a day. No interruption to my day and very effective.
The first visit to Dr. Shih is over $ 400 but after that office visits aren’t expensive. She works for a division of Sutter Health and they set the policies. Also, the screening process before the clinic will setup an appointment is rigorous.

I had a bad case of ophthalmic shingles. I went to two highly credentialed ophthalmologists for care, but in both cases, they spent less than 3 minutes in the examination room with me. They rushed through the diagnosis and were impatient to answer a couple of my questions. I was floored by the careless manner in which they treated me. I think a lot of eye doctors make their money from Lasik surgeries these days. That said, lasik patients are their practice priority. Finally, I found Dr. Karen Shih. In addition to her impressive education clinical background, she is caring, informative, patient, communicative and very thorough. She took the time to go over each step of the examination process. She put me at ease by taking the time to explain my eye condition and walked me through the treatment process. She is a terrific eye doctor/​surgeon (not a lasik business person). I’ve been under her care since. Eye shingles and iritis are stubborn eye viruses, but under Dr. Shih’s care, I’m just about fully recovered. She will take great care of you.
