Mt. Hope Convenience Center

You can either dump your trash here or hire one of the local companies to do it for you. The dump is open pretty much 7 days a week 7 to 7 rain or shine. The only negative thing I would say is that in some situations you might arrive there while they are changing the trash containers. This process can take 10 – 20 minutes!!!

Long ago, when I moved to Calvert County, I discovered a ritual that is as revered as looking for fossilized shark’s teeth or going out for crabs.
I discovered the social aspect of taking a truckload of garbage and junk to the dump.
I know, I know… my dear District friends, I can see you wrinkling your noses in disgust, but I am being honest with you. In CalCo, when you have loaded your obligatory pick up truck (the one issued to you when you arrive), full of the week’s garbage, recyclables, and various odds and ends that you have no idea how to dispose of, a Calvert County Compactor and Collection site is a bright beacon of light waiting to help you lay your trashy burden down.
It’s also where we get to peek at each other’s stuff.
Not all compacter sites are created equally, so I’ll start with the one I frequent the most, Mt. Hope. Its a smaller site, but they still welcome not only household trash, but clothing, glass, plastics, cardboards, paint, oils, metals, and best of all, old computer equipment and fluorescent bulbs.
The price. Free. You can pretty much rid yourself of all sorts of clutter and waste safely, knowing the items will be disposed of properly, and not be charged by the pound. Carpet is the only item they won’t take.
And when it comes to unloading, the «Dumpsters» are the best. I had no sooner rolled up next to the compactor when one of the guys jumped up into the pickup with me to help hoist some pretty large bags. «How ya doing today?» I asked. «Busy as a one armed garbage man!» he replied with laugh.
Yea…he had one arm.
I’d give the place 5 stars, but I have to take one away for the smell. It’s still a trash site, and on warm Mondays, after everyone has cleaned up from fishing and crab feasts, the Compacter site can be an olfactory nightmare.
But outside of the smell, the Mt. Hope Compacter Site is a surprisingly enjoyable way to rid oneself of the detritus of life.
