Used to really like this place, and the fish is still good. But at lunch today the service was terrible! They rushed us thorough the meal, trying to take our plates before we’d even eaten the food. And then took all the soy sauces off the table while we were still eating. And put our check on the table before we were near finished. Don’t know what the issue was. It was 2:15 pm and the place was only half full, with no one waiting. My wife was very displeased, and with so many other great sushi places within walking distance, there’s certainly no reason to pay to be treated like this.

My favorite restaurant in the world! The fish is so fresh and amazing! Can’t go a week without it. The spicy yellowtail roll is really amazing and the prices are great. The environment is very cute and clean. I recommend this place to everyone!

Love love love this place! Worth every penny. I drive from La to valley almost every week to have the taste of their food. Always consistent and amazing. I wish I could give 10 stars to this place.

My daughter and I love this place and have had many good experiences. Don’t be fooled by the unassuming strip mall location though. When the place gets busy, even Reese Witherspoon has to shout«Don’t you know who I am?» to get her rolls in under an hour. Last time we went there it took so long that I asked to have our rolls as takeaway. The waitress told me no. Thankfully for me, my love of good sushi outweighs my sense of self-respect, so I will continue to go there anyways. A word of warning though — once you eat sushi at Katsu-ya, you are ruined to all the rest. You will pass by the sushi section at the supermarket in abject snobbish disgust. But it’s worth it. And Patrick is the best.

WOWWOWWOW by far the freshest sushi place ever!!! It was my first time trying this place and I feel in love. I already want to go back lol. We got the corn tempura as an appetizer, shishito peepers and garlic edamame. It was my first time trying The corn tempura and it was so delicious. I got the spicy tuna topped with crispy popcorn shrimp my two favorite dishes in one!!! It gets pretty busy so try to make reservations.

Most dishes are very good to great. The food and cocktail options are creative. It’s a bit prices, but worth extra for such a cool and up beat atmosphere. Fun place for an after work meeting or a power date with someone special.

Not a fancy place, but a great place to get good quality sushi at an affordable price. Definitely one of my go-to spots for sushi. I usually just get the sushi dinner and substitute the CA roll for a tuna roll and it’s an amazing value. I brought some friends from Japan and they couldn’t believe how good AND cheap it was. Bad thing about the place is that it can get very busy and parking is a hassle, so try to get their early or make reservations.

The evening started off with a hint of what was to come from the maitre d stand — we could have this table, but not that, etc — and we had too many people in our party. Next we had a rowdy table behind us. It was hard to make ourselves heard, but we were OK with that. Then the maitre d arrives at our table and informs us that unless we ‘shut up’ we will have to leave. When we try to explain it was the table behind, he interrupted and said ‘I told them, too!‘ There was almost no one left in the place other than us, the table behind us, and a couple at the bar — who we were told were complaining. Our two kids went to say sorry to the couple. Aged 5 and 8. They were insulted and pushed away. The mother went to rescue them and was assaulted by the manager, physically. What was supposed to be a nice family meal in the valley turned quickly into the ‘Bridge over the river Qwai’ I am appalled. Disgusted. Abused. And shall never, ever be back. And neither should you: Don’t ever give your hard-earned money to arrogant and violent Japanese people who believe they can abuse American customers for it. There are SO many great restaurants in the valley, and a ton of fabulous sushi restaurants with charming owners who appreciate your business and provide excellent food and polite service — so give THEM your custom and avoid these people like the plague: they don’t deserve your patronage. Ever.

I always thought I didn’t really like sushi. I liked some rolls but never actual sushi. Now, after eating at Katsu-Ya, I LOVESUSHI. Their rice is perfect, and not too much under each perfectly cut piece of fish/eel etc. Even their Arnold Palmer tasted better then I’ve ever had before. The restaurant is tiny and full of people but you won’t mind after you start eating their delicious food. I can’t wait to go back!

We dined there on a busy Saturday night with another couple. A tad more«authentic» than the rest of the Katsu-Ya branches, although not«orthodox» enough for the wifey. Crowded, tables close together and surprisingly very bright in there — presumably to see the fish better. The sushi is good, nicely prepared. We had some specials — super toro, amaebi, soft shell crab — in addition to the usual nigiri suspects. Pleasant and efficient service. I would probably return if I was in the neighborhood, but as it is, our fave is still Kanda.

The food at Katsu-ya is generally very good. I have no complaints about it, and frankly, I really loved the 6 Albacore tasting today. That said, I felt compelled to write a review after an unfortunate customer service incident. We sat at the sushi bar. We ordered 5 dishes. The sushi chef serving us seemed to be a bit sick and kept coughing into the inside of his elbow as he was preparing all of our dishes. I know he wasn’t coughing into his hands, but come on, that’s not appropriate when you’re touching raw food. Especially when you’re doing it in front of the people you’re preparing the food for. Now, that aside, we continued the meal without making a big deal of it and chose to alert the waitress as we asked for the check. They addressed it with the sushi chef while we were sitting right there and sent him right back out. To me, the entire ordeal was unprofessional and grossly uncomfortable. The coughing thing isn’t the norm here(in fact, I’ve never experienced it before), but the lack of professionalism and customer service was enough for me to take my business to Sugar Fish and Asanebo next time I’m in the neighborhood.

Always THE best sushi anywhere! Love the staff, the chef, ambiance the food– spicey tuna rolls = keep em comin’ Robert Rolls= to die for. Seared albacore = heaven in my mouth. been coming here For EVER and cannot get enough. Have been to the other locations and they do not compare as the chef here Rocks & Rolls! Came here last night for my aunts birthday and had a great visit and excellent food EXCEPT the server guy recommended the super Toro instead of the Albacore and kept pushing it– it WASDISGUSTING&CHEWY, hard to chew, had to spit out several bites and this was everyone at our tables opinion not just mine. I’d normally never allow a negative comment for Katsu ya but For 38 dollars it should have tasted somewhat good. And if I am trying to order something I already love and want a friend to enjoy same just let us order what we want. Also, I kept ordering and ordering but I guess because we were there 2 hours our server got tired of us ordering food, stopped checking on us, stopped filling up our green tea, told us it was cold– no more water fill up. We were quiet and had a bill of over 150 so shame on him for not understanding his job. NEVER in all my years of visiting and bringing hundreds of people here have I had such a server. I was completely embarrassed and may be reluctant to being anyone back.

So disappointed last night. Our food was good when we got it but we had to wait almost hours and half for 5 items plus salads. We ordered right away since we know what we want there and always start with those staples then add more. We had to remind the waitress over a dozen times(maybe more) of our orders she just was a lost soul. We kept having to repeat over and over to her when she came out she would say so what did you order. She brought out wrong salad and wrong sushi to us. I had to bite my tongue but I wanted to say hell at 530 we ordered 5 sushi items and you wrote down our order so why is it we are still begging for our correct items to come at at 655??? We wanted to order more but didn’t want to wait and an other hour and half. So disappointed. Why wasn’t management on top of this?

I had an overall great experience at this restaurant. We actually arrived half and hour late for our reservation but they seated us immediately. Our server was friendly but didn’t hover, which was really nice. We ordered the spicy tuna with crispy rice, popcorn shrimp, and a few nigiri. The nigiri had such fresh fish that melted in our mouths. The eel was a little too powerful for my tastes, but it was good quality. We also had the yellowtail with jalapeño, which was drowned in sauce and I didn’t enjoy. But definitely order the spicy tuna with crispy rice. That was the star of the evening.

The omakase is really good here. I believe it was $ 75 for a 4 course meal. They change it from time to time but it comes with sushi and it’s good quality fish. When I went 2 weeks ago they had grilled cod, sushi plate, ceviche, and dessert plate with brownie and mochi icecream.

For the price, this is the best sushi in the area. Ordered spicy tuna with a shrimp tempora cover, and the tempora soup. Ate every last nibble. You got a lot of food, so bring an appetite. Also, you receive miso and side salad. No need to spend the five dollar for the valet, if you are willing to walk a block or two

So good. Ate here for the first time on Sunday night. Sat at the sushi bar. The sushi chef was amazing and helped us figure out what to order. I ordered salmon sashimi, blue crab hand roll, and salmon nigiri with garlic butter. I’ve been to Katsuya in downtown and Hollywood and this is the best of the three more authentic, less«LA.» Definitely check this place out but make a reservation first!

The hype here is real, since its the OG location. Casual hole in the wall feel but gets packed. Make reservations ahead of time. We got there on Tuesday night right when they opened at 5:30 and already there was a group of people waiting outside at 5:29pm, filled up exceptionally quick! Service was actually pretty upsetting. Our waitress was sweet but I shouldn’t have to ask 3 times for our saki, wait for about 15 – 20 minutes for each dish to come out as we were clearly getting hungrier by the minute, everything just took a very long time. My lack of stars is credited to the slow service. The sushi itself, I wanted to love it but they only had half my heart that day. Shishito peppers this time of year are spicy so beware! The albacore belly was chewy, and the albacore with crunchy spinach the albacore was delicious but oddly the spinach tasted fishy. I did love the spicy tuna on crispy rice, crunchy rock shrimp and the spicy albacore tempura roll. It was our last roll, guess they saved the best for last, I could eat 2 of those. I feel like maybe third times the charm?

If there was a way to given them less tan one star and still leave a review, I would. I am allergic to wheat. They made a really big deal about gluten free at lunch yesterday, but I had to send my salad back twice because they kept putting wanton crumbs on it. Started to feel a little off last night before dinner, and my body woke me up this morning at 7 with muscle rigidity/pain, fascia cramping, hives in my mouth, and trouble breathing. So angry. Sushi is usually my safe food. Never eating here again.

I don’t really get the hype of this place. I was here on a date, and admittedly it was an awful date, so maybe that’s why… but I digress. We came in on a Friday night, so obviously it was busy. All the tables were cramped next to each other and I could barely hear my date as he was trying to talk to me. The food wasn’t that spectacular either. Everything just tasted less fresh than other sushi places I’ve been to. I didn’t really want more than one or two pieces of everything we ordered because none of it was very flavorful. Also, it seems silly to me that I had to pay for a $ 3 valet to get in here since street parking was fully. Really? Too many other good sushi places in the area to come back here.

I had the privilege to dine at this location twice and both times the honor of having omakase from the chef Jeff. So this review will be based on the omakase items I’ve tasted rather than whats on the menu. The first time I went to get omakase I went with one of my girl friends on a Sunday and sat at the bar. We went around 8pm, considering it was Sunday I expected the place to be kind of empty but to my surprise the place was beyond busy and was completely full throughout my dinner. I felt bad that we requested an omakase when the place was so busy. Our chef Jeff tried his best to keep us company and accommodate us while making orders for the whole restaurant. When he wasn’t giving us our dish he was basically stuck making everything else! If you read this THANKYOU !! I’d have to admit we had more than enough food presented to us but my memory isn’t the greatest so I’ll just list a few that comes to my mind. The charred salmon was definitely something I can not say I had anywhere else. It was amazing! The uni ika shiso concoction was heavenly, The spicy tuna on crispy rice was actually really good, I never really go for the rolls or the crispy rice but the chef assured that it would be delicious and seriously it was. It’s been so long I don’t remember much so I’d have to come back to write a better update on this place and the chef !

Sushi is really good, rolls were ok. The rolls fell apart, which is kind of annoying when trying to eat them. Not very busy on a Saturday night, which is good for me. But kind of weird for a sushi restaurant… Over all not bad, but not my fave sushi bar, that’s why 4 stars.

Extraordinarily yummy, just like the Katsu-Ya in Brentwood! I actually think this location is superior in a way. The quality of the fish seems more fresh and the ambiance is way less snobby. My favorite things to get are the blue crab hand roll, yellowtail sashimi with jalapeño, broiled black cod, and selected nigiri sushi(which pretty much comes with a variety of all types of sashimi — I like everything, except the salmon… but I’m also not a huge fan of salmon in general). My husband has also tried the chirashi bowl before, which was pretty good… but way too much raw stuff for me. I like to mix it up with some warmer dishes to round out the meal, which is why I highly recommend the blue crab hand roll — you really can’t go wrong with that! ;) And truly, you can’t go wrong with ANY Katsu-Ya location. Definitely some of the best and most fresh sushi around!

Up to about 5 years ago I used to eat here once or twice weekly. The quality of their sushi and the taste of their dishes has dropped dramatically. This used to be THE sushi restaurant in the valley with the best designer rolls and freshest fish. I was so disappointed after eating there tonight… The portion sizes were halved, the dishes lacked any distinct aroma and flavor, and rolls tasted similar to what you can pickup prepackaged at Vons. Just about the only thing that was better was that I didn’t have to wait 1 hour to be seated since there wasn’t a line like you’d expect before.

My husband and I have tried several Japanese places in the area, and I have to say the prices here are not bad. The fish was very fresh and the prices for the handrolls and nigiri/sashimi were less expensive then some other nearby places. Aside from the nigiris, we also ordered the popular tuna appetizer(forgot the name).it was plated beautifully with a tower of avocados slices, however the Japanese salsa heavily overpowered the dish. Slight con: parking sucks… small parking lot .so you most likely have to resort to valet parking.($ 3) Will definitely come back though!

We’ve been going to this Katsu-Ya for years and it never fails us! My friends and I always order the spicy tuna crispy rice — the rice is divine! I normally don’t like spicy food, but the jalapeño on top gives the roll just the right kick! I also like their miso — nothing special but a nice way to start the meal. This time, we tried their Cajun Salmon Roll, which has baked salmon with cajun spices and mustard sauce, and with cucumbers, all wrapped in soy paper. The sauces were very complimentary to the salmon and cucumber, and the soy paper didn’t distract from the flavors like seaweed would have. Great roll! We also tried the Spicy Tuna with Popcorn Shrimp Tempura Roll — how tasty! I normally don’t like shrimp, but the popcorn shrimp tempura was so tender and covered in almost a honey-like sauce, that I forgot it was shrimp. It went really well with the spicy tuna on the inside, which wasn’t too spicy. You could eat the shrimp alone, or attempt to eat the entire roll at your risk! Although the rolls were very filling, we ended up ordering a yellowtail roll to finish up the evening. It was very light and a nice way to clear our palettes after all of the sauces in the other rolls. Final verdict: easy valet parking in the lot in front of the restaurant, affordable prices considering the good quality, great service, and a lot of variety on the menu! I won’t stop bringing friends from out of town here when they’re craving good sushi.
