Sushi is average. The hostess(most likely students) were very kind. The reason for my one star rating is because the manager was extremely cheap and rude towards me and my friends. We came in at 5:20pm, during happy hour, and waited until 7pm(because we had already ordered). At this time, we were still not seated, so we wanted to just pay for our food and leave. However, the manager did not want us to leave with the happy hour price. He still insisted that we pay full price, even after having us wait for more than an hour and a half. He treated us like we were delinquent college students. In the end, the hostess was nice and charged us the happy hour price(I still tipped).

10mins drive from the restaurant, already waited 1hour and 30mins n don’t get the food yet. What’s going on? I believe my sushi is not fresh anymore.

This is my favorite spot, hands down!!! I’ve been coming here for almost 5 years now. It doesn’t disappoint one bit. I’ve referred friends, they always come back. Food is delicious. I drive 30min and I don’t mind it at all. Their food is always good, anything I’ve tried is always on point. Their staff is friendly and helpful. I come with friends, family. I use any excuse possible to come and enjoy. Drinks are tasty! You will not go wrong!

There aren’t too many sushi places near Stony Brook University so Kumo is a hidden gem. I actually went in during lunch service and I don’t have any complaints. The lunch special offerings were very affordable. The service was amazing and the food was great. I ordered a Shrimp Tempura Bento Box and was extremely delighted. There was a delay in getting my brown rice out and the waitress offered to exchange that for fried rice at no additional cost. I can’t wait to go back and try some of their other offerings.

Eat at this restaurant once a month at least. The sushi is phenomenal and the hibachi is equally as great. The service could not be better and the décor is outstanding. My favorite and it will be yours as well.

My boyfriend brought me here the other night for dinner. The oversized restaurant has a super sexy/swanky vibe. It’s an asian fusion/hibachi/Japanese steakhouse so you’re bound to find something you’ll like. The udon soup was quite good and the seafood was plentiful. My boyfriend raved about the American Dream roll. The mixed drink list is extensive and is sure to please. I agree with the other patrons that the waitstaff tends to linger but it didn’t detract from my overall experience; they were friendly and helpful overall. The major downside however was the noise level– impossible to hear anyone else at your table without yelling. All in all, I would definitely return. If it wasn’t a Sunday night I would have certainly gotten my drink on– plans for next time!

We came here on a Saturday night for the first time and had a great time! The food is fresh and comes out quick, the cocktail list is pretty extensive as well as the sake and the environment is so energetic and lively with all dim lighting and blue highlights. The slow service is the only reason this place doesn’t get 5 stars from me. I had to ask two different waiters for glasses of water 5 minutes after our sake order came out. The food easily made up for it. The American Dream and Angry Bird rolls were delicious and we ordered some flying fish roe and smoked salmon sushimi on the side to go along with our appetizer of edamame. We stayed after at the bar for a martini. I had the lychee martini and it was great and strong. The bartenders were really nice and attentive while we sipped our drinks and watched the games that were showing on the TVs. The place is split in two, a restaurant with a cool bar and a hibachi section in the rear. I would come back here again and try out the hibachi in the back.

Went here for a family Hibachi dinner on a Sunday night. The restaurant was busy but not really crowded. We were seated right away and then immediately asked for our drink orders. I know that most Hibachi restaurants try to hurry you along, but this was a little too much. My wife was still in the process of removing her jacket when the waiter was asking about our drinks. After the drinks were ordered we had two waiters anxiously wait for us to order our dinners. They were literally standing over us, waiting for the order. Dinner itself was fairly good. The portions were somewhat generous and tasted good. Unfortunately, our chef wasn’t as outgoing and fun as i have experienced at similar restaurants. The whole act seemed somewhat forced. He did most of the usual tricks and routine except for the Saki squirt(water for kids) which seems to be the norm at these type of restaurants. The overall cost was about average for Hibachi in the area. My only gripe with the check was the fact that they charge for soda refills. You would figure that they wouldn’t bang you an additional $ 2 for a soda refill. Overall, I rate Kumo as average. I would not go back because there are many better options available in the area. Midori in Mount Sinai and Nishiki in Selden are much better and more entertaining.

This is a great place to have dinner. My boyfriend and I came here to have dinner before seeing a movie. The sake was delicious and the sushi was fresh. I highly recommend the American Dream roll — delicious! The only reason it is not a 5 star place is because the service. They are constantly hovering and as soon as you are seated they are trying to get you out as quick as they can. We probably were at the table for 40 minutes. At least the food came out quick. After we were rushed out of our table, my boyfriend and I went to the bar to grab some martinis because we felt uncomfortable ordering drinks at our table. I ordered the bubbly orange and my boyfriend ordered the lychee martini. They were both delicious! The service at the bar was much better than the service at our table. We will be back. Next time to maybe try the habachi!

Always loved Kumo. It’s nice inside and the cocktails are always very good. The seafood always tastes fresh. The only negative is I always feel rushed by the waitstaff. Other then that it’s usually a great dinner night out.

Hibachi is not my thing but I have been here several times for group office events. Hibachi meals tend to be large volumes of food so if that is your thing you will like this place. The chefs put on a show while cooking and those who enjoy a volcano fire and having food thrown at them will enjoy the entertainment. And while I will admit it’s hilarious to watch a chunk of zucchini bounce off a friend’s head, it gets old fast. I wouldn’t go here if you want a quality quiet meal. It’s not that kind of place. It gets loud when drunk people are screaming for sake to be squirted into their mouths. The service can be spotty when it busy but the employees are working hard so I don’t blame them.

We have tried a few sushi places around here and this is our favorite so far. It has a pretty good selection from standard sushi rolls to more speciality rolls. The overall menu has a variety of Japanese style foods. This place also has a hibachi style menu as well, which is amazing as well. We really like this place and have really enjoyed the food!

Not being a fan of noisy, multimedia venues, I’ve never dined IN Kumo, but have had their takeout countless times. The Godzilla roll(spicy cruncy tuna, avocado, and creamy sauce) has been a favorite, along with the Crazy Tuna roll(pepper tuna, onion, avocado, spicy cruncy tuna outside, and honey wasabi sauce) and the AAC(avocado, asparagus, and cucumber). I also like their version of miso soup, and the ginger dressing on their house salad. But every now and then, Kumo brings the ‘B’ team to bat, and unfortunately today was one of those days. The spicy crunchy tuna tasted fishy, the nori was rubbery, and the avocado in the shrimp tempura roll had those brown strings running through. They’re usually better than this, so they keep their three-star rating.

Price: for lunch, it’s a good-sized portion of you get the bento boxes. For the sushi rolls lunch specials, you can ask for the 2-roll set or the 3-roll set. You can ask for brown rice but they charge $ 1.00 for every roll they make with brown rice. So that’s $ 3.00 extra already for the 3-roll set. Steep? YES. Why? For dinner, prices are steeper but portions are larger. I got two fillets of salmon for the salmon teriyaki for $ 18 – 20. Salmon is juicy but light pink — indicating it’s probably farmed salmon and not as healthy as people think it is. Sometimes it’s overdone and dry(I’ve gotten this enough times to see it’s not consistent). Quality: it’s nothing special but it’s not bad. I don’t think you’ll get scombroid poisoning here but who knows? Staff: front desk hosts are not so friendly. No one smiles. They are curt and give you this look as if you’re wasting their time making your takeout or picking up takeout. I’ve interacted with 3 different hosts and none have smiled or been friendly. But the waiters/waitresses are very welcoming. They look genuinely happy to be there which makes a meal there pleasant. Décor: definitely trendy and modern-looking. They seem to try to cater to a young crowd(with the loud music, dark atmosphere, bar and weekly ladies’ night) but every time I go, I see middle-aged Long Islanders. Overall, I usually come here for lunch takeout if Ssambap(Korean restaurant that serve Japanese food also, by the way) is closed like on Monday or if I’m far from Midori or another place that serve Japanese food. The biggest deterrent are the people who greet you.

Got the lunch sushi roll combo deal! Three rolls for 11.95, not a bad price deal! The chicken tempura was pretty good! The regular lunch deal sushi was alright/good. Nothing exotic was offered in the deal, so hope to go again for some specials they have! There is also hibachi in the back. Likely will go again, the place was impressive! Liked the restaurant vibe, blue/purple lighting and even the seating was nice. Customer service was very quick and available!

Such good sushi! I especially love the Godzilla roll. The fried calamari plate is fine but too small– I definitely wouldn’t waste my time. The sashimi appetizer is great. Try to go during happy hour! I think it’s 4 – 6 on weekdays. It’s a lot cheaper and definitely worth it. There’s a smaller menu if you choose happy hour, but they have most of their best products in it anyway so it’s worth it.

I’ve been to Kumo twice — both for hibachi. The land and sea option($ 40) is very filling. It includes lobster tail, filet mignon, shrimp, scallop, assorted vegetables, and fried rice. It’s good but it’s nothing special. The filet mignon(cooked rare) did not disappoint. The chef was friendly. He cracked some jokes and even squirted water on me! The bill came out to $ 130(tax and tip included) for 2 land and sea, an appetizer, and 2 drinks. The food was definitely not worth the price, but you’re paying for the experience of having your food cooked in front of you with a couple of cool tricks thrown in.
