Sylvan Learning of Stockton

After speaking with the Sylvan representative and confirming that my schedule would work for tutoring sessions for my daughter, I brought her in for their testing. I was told I would receive a call to discuss the results.
When I received the call a little over a week later, I was surprised to find out that they were not calling with the results, they were calling to change the dates/​times of the tutoring sessions they had agreed to because ‘they made a mistake’ with the dates and times they previously offered.
Of course there was NO flexibility with what they offered after I had gone through the initial steps. I will not be continuing with Sylvan and am taking my daughter to another tutoring service. I am very disappointed.

My daughter has recently started with sylvan and we love the welcoming atmosphere and tutors. They reach out to her school teachers with her assessment results as well as her progress thus far. They really work well to create a conducive tutoring session to enable my daughter to succeed! I look forward to whats to come.

Seriously considering filing a complaint with better business bureau. They are LIARS and want your money. We were looking to help our child and challenge them to improve their reading skills. Our childs report card from the first grade shows them meeting the standard in all areas and exceeding standards in math and reading… yet sylvans assessment said she couldn’t recognize all her capital letters??? And would need 160 – 174 hours to «catch up» at the tune of 55 dollars an hour… Hmmm …

Sylvan on Ben Holt is to be avoided. As concerned parents, we reached out to Sylvan on Ben Holt to help our 1^st grader improve her reading.
My wife had a meeting with the director, Jareb Collins. We looked up Mr. Collins online and he popped up on facebook and seemed to be an upstanding man of faith having gone to a biblical college. You can never be too sure these days. BTW, the review by Sarah C for this site appears to be the directors wife as I see Jareb in the reviewers photograph.
In the initial meeting we were told our daughter needed to be tested and up front fees were discussed. No problem. After the initial assessment, we were told she had some deficiencies and we would be receiving a binder that showed her progress. We paid for 10 sessions. After the third session, we thought it odd the instructor working with our daughter never came out to say hi or discuss any progress updates. The one brief time that she did Mr. Collins whisked her away and rudely interrupted our conversation. We asked our daughter if Sylvan was easier or harder than her 1^st grade class. She said tutoring was fun because they just played games and she got a prize after each tutoring class. Our daughter said her 1^st grade class was alot harder than tutoring. Parents are not allowed to be in the tutoring session and they encourage you to leave all together.
After that we asked Jareb for a meeting. He emailed me multiple times asking why we wanted to meet. We just wanted a progress report and the items we were told we would receive. Mr. Collins was very busy and could not meet with us right away. He finally had time the following week whereby Mr. Collins excused our daughter from her 4^th session.
At the meeting, we tried to lay out our agenda. During the initial few minutes of the meeting we were interrupted by Mr. Collins multiple times in a very defensive manner. He seemed very anxious and agitated. When we informed Mr. Collins we were trying to tell him why we were there, he SLAMMED his binder shut and said there is nothing he can do to please us. Wow! He went on to essentially call us liars because he swore he gave us everything. I told him we just received a green water bottle and that was it. We could not believe this was happening.
Here is what we requested in the meeting:
1. THE binder
2. Update on our daughters progress.
3. Why we cannot speak with our daughters tutor.
That was our agenda. PERIOD!
After Mr. Collins ended the meeting abruptly, we asked for a refund minus the sessions that were used. He became hostile toward my wife. I intervened and asked him for our money back as we were not provided as he promised us on the contract. He said per the contract there was no refunds. After Jareb deliberated a few moments he was agreeable to ONLY refund us for 6 sessions, he said he would not refund us for the 4^th session despite him excusing our daughter from class for our meeting.
We hope any potential customers of Sylvan Ben Holt proceed with caution and due diligence. Get everything in writing, do not believe what Mr. Collins says to you.
Jareb you should be ashamed of yourself considering you graduated from a Christian college. Trust is earned, not deserved.
We will never bring our daughter back to Sylvan Ben Holt.
