I attended the Invincible: A Glorious Tribute to Michael Jackson this past Saturday. I had hoped to enjoy the performance, but the individuals in front of me treated the show more like a concert where they were standing, swaying, shouting, waving arms and constantly taking cell phone photos and videos. Everyone to my right and left were frustrated that we had paid for better seats and were unable to see the stage much of the time. I had asked 2 staff members to please speak with them. One staffer came by about 35 min after I first mentioned the situation, but that did not stop anything. No additional action was taken. At intermission, the couple, who had been drinking alcohol from the start of the performance and were clearly inebriated, then decided to get additional alcoholic drinks. I would have hoped that the bartender would have cut them off, but apparently not. I actually had to get up and take a seat further back that was vacant to be able to enjoy just a little bit of the show. I really would have thought that this couple would have been escorted out for their behavior by staff members. I was thoroughly disappointed in staff and I would hope that patrons would be better taken care of in the future.

I purchased 2 tickets to see Shrek on the website and no where on the site did it state that it was a kids show. I then received a flyer in the mail and an email which then stated that it was indeed a children’s show. I purchased the tickets for two adults. When I called the box office to request a refund due to a misrepresentation he told me that there were no refunds or transfers. How terrible that they take advantage of people like this, I think the word to be used here is FRAUD. I will never go back to this theater again. I would have picked no stars but it did not let me do that.

Nice theater but way, way outdated. I don’t understand how a theater of this size has such a limited bathroom space for the amount of people that it holds. Come on. Get w/the program!

I went yesterday 11÷28÷14 to see one of my favorite comedians here. The theater itself was gorgeous. The statues and décor of the theater made it seem like we were in a different country. My rating comes from the way management handled a situation which totally interrupted my friends and I from seeing the show. They sold tickets to a pair of women and sold the same tickets to my friends and I for the same seats. The usher made my party and I leave our seats and walk all the way down to the lobby, while the other women sat in OUR seats which we had already settled in. We then had to walk down 4 flights of stairs for the woman, presumably the manager to tell us we have to walk all the way back up to our seats we had been sitting in, and they were giving the woman who kicked us out seats in the orchestra. I was furious. We missed the opening act and it was overall a horrible experience with the personnel there. Otherwise, it was a fantastic venue. Get some new management, then maybe I will return.

This place is like you’re stuck in the Staten Island version of «Midnight in Paris»! You know you are walking down an ordinary street and then BAM! Right in the middle of the 1920s! I’m an old soul so I love this stuff! I came here last Friday to see a live 1920s style Jazz band and company. The show was Broadway style(and I’d know i have more Broadway Play Bills than underwear) This is a GEM. I’ve been living in Staten Island for all these years and never even looked at this place! Plus all the renovations are done by a sister duo out of their own pockets and just for the love of the theater. It is lovely!!!

This was my first time at the theatre and I can’t say that I missed much. You can tell it is old by the desperate need for renovations. It is a small theatre, but I guess not too small for Staten Island. We saw the Goo Goo Dolls here and the audio was pretty good. The bathrooms are way too dark and need some fixing as well. I would go back to this venue, but it definitely needs some TLC.

Despite the fact that the theater is located in such a crappy area. The inside is actually very nice. The ceiling and the sides of the theater looks very antique. Never would’ve expected a theater on Staten Island. I saw the America’s Got Talent Live show here. The sound quality was very good and so was the lighting.

Great ornate, historically preserved venue. Seating only, no standing room. Really nice acoustics and close to all transit options in Staten Island(all 3 that is lol). I saw Australian Pink Floyd here a few years back. They were able to pull off all of their usual pyrotechnics, lighting, and huge inflatable pig and there were no technical trip-ups in the performance. Would definitely recommend as the pull in pretty good nationally touring outfits. Easily the best live-perfomance venue on Staten Island.

Of course most of you hear Staten island & cringe thinking of stereotypical Italian-Americans, a smelly dump that has long been closed, a long commute sitting by the same people who dwell in all DMV’s… and it’s okay to judge but first visit this theatre. I have been to theaters in over 12 countries, yes I absolutely paused for a moment to count(yes, still with my fingers, stop judging) and being in St. George Theatre feels as though you are in a faraway land. You’re probably thinking, what artist is desperate enough to go to St. George? I have seen Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, & Louis CK. here, just a couple of no big deal comedians :) What goes on here? Doo-woop shows, Singalong Shows(Grease & Sound of Music), Broadway shows, Freestyle dance shows, Comedies, Holiday specials, Kid programs, etc. How are the prices? Reasonable as long as you don’t buy a ticket a couple hours before or from random, creepy men who linger outside… they don’t even make scalpers like they used to! Décor — Red everywhere like a theater should be! The cathedral ceiling with gorgeous dome in the center will easily impress you. Beautiful statues. Lots to look at and things to discuss when arriving early and sitting with your date. Getting there — From NYC you take a 24 hour, free hourly ferry and walk a couple of safe, blocks. Public transportation right to the ferry then walk! If you are driving, there is parking everywhere but if you don’t feel like looking or parallel parking head to the lot for less than $ 10 on show nights. Food — Enoteca! Directly next door you have this Italian restaurant that offers a different menu everyday. Everything is fresh. Portions aren’t too big. The quality is beyond superb. Service is perfect. Date — Yes, you absolutely have a great chance of scoring major points and getting lucky if you bring your significant other here, maybe even in the theatre…

I always dread coming here but my bf’s daughter has her two plays here every year and is forced to come. This theatre is old not kept up with as in lights havent been changed in forever hasnt been painted since the 40’s the seats are ripped to shreds and the sound system is terrible. They make so much money they should put some money in restoring the theatre it looks absolutely rundown. I wouldnt go see anything there unless you have to.

I came here with my girlfriend to see Ingrid Michaelson’s concert back in early September. This theater is pretty cute and reminds me of kids theaters back in Minnesota. It’s small and intimate enough that Ingrid was able to have conversations with her audience all night; super cute and effective. If not for it being in Staten Island, this rating would be higher just because the commute was such a pain, especially on a Sunday night when I have to worry about catching a ferry to go home!

While the theater is beautiful and historic this is not a place you want to go see a concert. We’ve been to many concerts such as Radio City & Carnegie Hall where there are seats. If you wanted to sit than go watch it at home. It is disrespectful to the artist. We recently went to see a Blondie concert there and I thought going the the New Brunswick State theater was bad(It was like going to see a concert with zombies). Here the front orchestra was inhabited by stodgy gerontology patrons who clearly had nothing else to do on a Thursday night or season ticket holder who again had nothing else to do so let’s see what’s playing. These same people complained that people were blocking their views because they were happen to be enjoying the concert and dancing. The ushers would come and tell people to sit down or get security to tell them to sit because of complaints. People argued and skirmishes erupted as drunk red necks pushed people to sit down towards the front. If you wanted to sit then sit at home. We had an older couple from Ireland visiting sitting next to us asking was all American concert this dead? They said in Ireland everyone would be stand up and not just sitting down. That kind of speaks volume right there. Frankly, this is ridiculous and never have seen this in any concert and I have been to many. I was just at a recent Morrissey concert at Radio and everyone one stood up as the artist came out. They stood during slow songs. They stood during fast songs. They stood up. Not once did the ushers tell anyone to sit down. Maybe it was just classy. Back to the story. At one point, they finally gave up because this is a ROCK concert and people WILL stand up to DANCE and enjoy the music. The usher gave an exasperated hands in the air as the the audience all stood up. This really ruined the concert experience and joys of seeing a concert. Word of advice to St. George Theatre. Maybe act more like a theatre and not a theater. If you don’t want people standing, dancing during a concert don’t have concerts here. Do your Pirates of Penzance production if you want people to brainless watch rendition of ‘I am the very model of a modern Major General, I’ve information vegetable, animal…’ But please don’t torture people going to see a concert by having a concert here.

If you haven’t seen this theater yet– it will blow you away. I came to this theater because I was a background actor for Smash and set was here. When we first walked in– it felt like I was transported back in time. It was beautiful– to say the least. The theater is huge and gorgeous. If you are a theater junkie– it’s sure to please. Since I didn’t see a show– I didn’t get to experience the snack bar or ticket taking. But the bathrooms were clean and in working order. The upstairs bathroom had a lovely lounge with couches that overlooked the main stairs from a little balcony. So much detail and work went into making and restoring this theater. Having a gem like this still looking pristine means a lot of people are working behind the scenes on a regular basis. If we had been allowed(set rules) — I would have taken a million pictures. I did see posters for an upcoming show of «Phineas & Ferb Live» so they definitely have something for every age.

Not a Staten Island resident but had tickets to see Louis CK this past friday as part of the 2011 Comedy Festival. The Good The theatre’s architecture leaves you speechless, absolutely beautiful and well maintained as well. The staff there were very polite and extremely helpful. Bad My group and I were unable to see nor hear anything very clearly. Despite having mezzanine seating we were pretty high up and far from the stage. The seats are very close to each other allowing no space between yourself and your neighbor nor any leg room in front of you(my boyfriend is 5’11″ and had difficulty sitting normally in his seat, for most of the show he sat sideways towards me to be comfortable). If you’re clostophobic, this theatre is not a place you would want to be at. As for inability to hear anything, for the first half of the show the back speakers were extemely low and we hardly couldn’t hear anything, after it was adjusted we still were unable to hear at times, creating fustration and boredom. oh and just a tip — don’t come to this theatre on an empty stomach, paid 5 bucks for a pretzel and a bottle of water.

A wacky gem of a place. Built in the 20s, it relatively recently was refurbished by some rich lady and her daughters, and now hosts a local dance troupe, children’s concerts, non-equity national tours(I saw a friend in Urban Cowboy the Musical here — itself a ridiculous review in the making) and random musical acts(Taylor Hicks, Wayne Newton, and Yehoram Gaon this summer, for example.) They were serving free«champagne punch» in the lobby — and — I swear to God — one of the blue hairs in the lobby asked if it was Dom. Concession stuff is super cheap and really good — great fresh popped corn and the best, hottest, softest NY pretzel I’ve ever had. A variety of $ 1 candy too AND you can bring all of it into the theatre… but only because they are still doing the fundraising for real theatre chairs so it’s all convention style hotel dining room chairs now. Not the most comfy, but at least there’s plenty of leg room. A beautiful, perhaps over gilded in its renovation, theatre. Check out their website for upcoming events. Take the ferry over. Go to the dive bar next door. Have fun. :)
