Oriental Plaza Chinese & Japanese Restaurant

In the past, I would frequent Oriental Plaza often and always enjoyed my experiences. I hadn’t been back in a over year and was extremely disappointed with my latest visit. This place has really gone down hill.
My first issue was the hostess. For a Friday night, you expect a wait, but you also expect the hostess to be somewhat accurate when giving a time frame. When we walked in, we were told 15/20min…an hour later we were seated. We asked about the table mid way through and were told a table was being cleaned off upstairs. Half hour later we were seated downstairs. Made no sense and seemed like she had no clue what was going on. Better communication and training for front of the house staff is definitely needed. They should also have more than 1 on a weekend night shift.
Next issue, overcrowded seating. All tables were on top of each other and no exaggeration, waiters ran passed my seat and bump into my head at least 6 times during dinner. Then they placed a large party right behind us and another guests chair was smack up against mine. We had to turn our chairs sideways to fit. There was literally 4″ between our chairs, and the waiters would still shove themselves through it bumping into us each time with no apologizes. It absolutely ruined my meal. I was getting beyond frustrated.
The wait staff was also very inattentive & unfriendly. It was busy and for that there is some leeway but it never got better. It took 10min for anyone to even come to us after seated. No hello, how are you, just «are u ready?» Then my waiter kept calling me «girl». «What do you want, girl?» Just weird. I ordered sesame chicken and asked for white rice. When we got our meals, of course it came with brown rice. Anytime we ordered something they would put it on the table in front of the wrong person and would walk away. Our waiter never even came back for refills or to check in. He came for the order, to drop the food, drop the check and pick up of check.
The last thing that really annoyed me was when we finished our entrees. We had all ordered combos and were looking forward to the dessert it came with. Our waiter came, dropped the check and fortune cookies/​pineapples and left. We looked at each other like, is this the dessert? We had the bill ready and when he came back, he grabbed the check and started to leave. We stopped him and stated that we got dessert with our combos to which he said with an attitude, «yea I know that. We give you pineapple and choice of ice cream». He said it like we should have known that or something. We ordered the ice cream but had we not mentioned it he wasn’t bringing us any dessert that’s for sure. So unprofessional and rude.
The food was decent, good portions and tasted as one would expect; however, not enough of a plus to get me to come back here.

I came here for a holiday party my fiancé’s mother threw for her company. The food was pretty good. Upstairs there is a dance area and enough room to fit a DJ booth. I feel like they were a bit short staffed for the amount of people at the party but definitely worked with what they had. We had leftovers that were even better then the night before. It was a pretty good experience and very affordable. Would definitely recommend coming here for a sit down, take out, or party.

Parking is a problem and it is beside the TD Bank that closes late. The food seems taste one day old. Food serving was small and bathroom was not that clean. DO not be fooled by the ambiance and location. Our function was in the basement without music or drinks with overcharging for each person. Your Chinese food take out around your neighborhood taste better.

I’ve had many experiences here from family parties (hosting and attending), dining in, takeout, etc.
My most recent experience was dinner on a Friday night. I expected a wait, as the parking lot was full to the brim. After 40 minutes, we were seated. Unfortunately, the dining room being so packed and the crowd their full bar attracts leaves you deaf and with no voice from trying to scream over people. It’s a very «Staten Island» crowd here. This is not a place to eat during the weekend if you’re not planning on drinking and joining in on the noise.
The food is good. As other reviews stated, there’s no «wow» factor, but I haven’t had much Chinese food that wowed me. The service is fine. They do what they can to accommodate you and are very quick.
Unfortunately, you won’t find me here again because I’d prefer to not scream during dinner.

Oriental Plaza Chinese & Japanese Restaurant was a decent experience but nothing to write home (or get too lengthy) about. The Chinese food that we ordered (chicken with broccoli and beef with broccoli) was you’re run of the mill americanized chinese food, somewhat sweet and filling. It was ok for what it was. Their Japanese food was sub par and not worth the experience. Now before I get into the Japanese food, my biggest complaint with this restaurant was their presentation. Oriental Plaza Chinese & Japanese Restaurant has to have some of the worst plating/​presentation I have ever seen at a restaurant. They should be ashamed at how they present their food to their customers.
Their staff was incredibly friendly and helpful if not a bit disjointed as we had multiple waiters coming to our table unsure of who was handling our orders.
As for the Japanese food I found the Miso soup to be bland and not fresh, the salad underwhelming and the assorted sushi entrée to be puzzling. This was a 9 piece plate of sushi with 6 tuna rolls. The sushi pieces were supposed to be a «chef’s choice.» which I’m guessing means that the chef is a big fan of tuna, or someone in the back is slapping these plates together because I received my 6 tuna rolls, 7 assorted pieces of sushi and 2 pieces of tuna. IMHO this restaurant would do itself a great service by dropping the Japanese portion of their menu and concentrate their focus on the chinese portion and improving their presentation.

I love this place, clean and the food is delicious. My sister is very picky about where she eats and she has no problem enjoying the cuisine it has to offer. The Chinese place to eat on the Island.

They double-​booked the room reserved for my brother’s 60^th birthday party! We were relegated to a very small area off the main room. Squeezed in like sardines! They tried to be accommodating by being extra attentive but, really, it couldn’t make up for the this gross oversight.
I’d say it’s a good place to go for a meal but I would not trust them to hold a party reservation. There are too many other places to choose from.
As Jerry Seinfeld said, they can take a reservation, they just can’t hold a reservation.

Terrible service… couldn’t get the rice I wanted with lunch special, EVEN THOUGH, I was willing to pay extra for it. .ands they forgot my girl friends egg roll. had to wait longer for it. .and I wound up not ordering anything and my GF made me eat some of hers. .go somewhere else. .not good customer service. .food was decent.

Everything I’ve ever had when dining in was delicious. Today I ordered delivery for the first time in years. It took an hour and fifteen minutes for my food to come then when it finally came he rang the wrong doorbell. Foods in the house we unveil the food. The miso soup is in a coffee cup as well as the soy sauce for the rolls and sushi. Dumplings were in a traditional to-​go paper container. Ice burg lettuce for the salad… NOTHING ELSE! Sushi and rolls were mediocre. I will never be ordering from here again! Service has gone downhill for sure.

I never posted anything before but I just had to, I ordered chicken teriyaki that had no flavor whatsoever and was very dry and very small portion. I also ordered I Also ordered steak peppers and onions that had no taste either and also very small portion. The delivery took over one hour, people do yourself a favor and order somewhere else.

So I came here for a function. I’ve heard many good things about it but was excited to try it for myself. It was a great experience. The party did have an open bar. So I will be honest and say that the bartender made the party. He was hilarious and provided great service. The food was good. I liked the spareribs, sesame chicken and chicken rice best. I’d definitely recommend this spot for a function with people looking to have a good time. We were having so much fun that they kept the dance floor open beyond the time the party was suppose to end.

Honestly this place is a zero. Nasty waiters, ass décor and food that isn’t fit for a dog. I regret walking in and wasting my money

I’ll been here for a few private parties. It’s ok, the food is not a wow factor. One of the parties I attended here, I felt the catering staff was rushing us.

Went with my 4 year old, they made a special dish for him and all of the wait staff that came over talked to him and booked with him. Beyond the service, the food was really good and the portions were large. All in all, it was a fun night out with my son

My family and I have been going here for awhile, and we enjoy the Chinese food! I have no complaints for this restaurant! I would definitely recommend the fried rice because it is really tasty with their duck sauce, yum!

The restaurant definitely offers the best price for lunch specials. They are very fast at getting everything done. I usually get the sesame chicken, which is good. I recently had the general tso’s chicken and was not happy. The chicken was kind of gamey. I probably won’t be ordering anytime soon.

I have gone here for take out and sit in and it is both great food. I love that they have a parking lot and a bar. The servers are fine and its usually fast. The place itself is way more nice looking then an ordinary Chinese restaurant.

This restaurant is very nice and I’ve been to a few private parties here that were great, but Oriental Plaza isn’t my go-​to Chinese food place. There are great lunch special prices and the staff is very attentive. I usually order the boneless spareribs with fried rice and extra sauce for the ribs on the side because they are dry.

I’ve given this delicious Chinese restaurant the highest possible rating I could give. Five stars are given to upscale places, aren’t they? Should I give this place five stars? I can’t. Good food. Good service. Decent atmosphere. That’s it. The atmosphere wasn’t five stars.
Just, eat here. :)

The 4 stars are for eat-​in, for some reason I never enjoy delivery when I order from here.
The service here is always prompt. I recommend the Black Pepper Shrimp & Scallop dish. It’s just spicy enough– delicious! The boneless BBQ spare ribs are also really good. I love the chips that they give you with the spicy mustard & duck sauce. That spicy mustard will really clear out your sinuses, it’s great! They also have a full bar, and the bartenders typically have a very generous pour. You can count on a good meal at a fair price at Oriental Plaza.
