The one star is not for the Richmond hotel, in so far as it’s for anyone who look at the ratings. This isn’t a place for tourists — personally, I can’t stand them at all. Everyone deserves a place. What one person may find not to their liking, might not be, to someone else. The sad reality is there are many people — here in NYC and everywhere else, who are less fortunate, on fixed incomes. They can’t afford ‘luxury,’ and they cant get regular housing. It’s people like these which hotels like the Richmomd serve. Personally, I’d wish it would stay as it is — Meaning for those it serves — but, cleaner. I lived here — & it’s rooms to let — for almost six years. I totally understand — & agree — with what ‘Eugene D’ says(& I think I know him — if it’s the same Eugene who moved around the corner to Slosson). It’s NOT a glamorous, or ANYTHING approaching what ANYTOURIST, traveller, backpacker, business person wants, needs. This place is — for all it’s warts — a place where those who need a roof & a bed, can find it. They have ‘hot sheet’ rooms — rooms which rent by the hour, and rooms which rent 4 the night, the week. For several here, the Richmond IS home. It was mine. Yes, it had problems. Yes, I can tell you stories about murders, and police and drugs. But, I can also say that when I had no options — when renting an apartment was not something I could do, I had a HOME. I MADE it my home. My life in the time since has got much better, & I occasionally run in2 people frm The Richmond(who — like me, had been long-term tenants & moved around the corner in2 the rooming houses), &… in a way, I miss it. I miss it, because I had to appreciate everything I got, & had. I worked my butt off to make my room look like MY ‘palace.‘ But now — I’m more complacent, & that’s not good. Right now — just thinking back to those days and nights at The Richmond, makes me wanna go for a visit. Stay over — just a night or so — to ‘kick me’ in the ass. People are so caught up with ‘luxury.’ Without really appreciating something as(most people would find The Richmond) ‘awful’ as here, I can’t appreciate how fortunate I am. Ths is kinda weird, I know. So’s my life.
