If you get the hibachi then there’s no way you’re going home hungry. Good presentation and great flavor. I was there with four other guys after work on a Wednesday and none of us had anything bad to say.
I had steak and shrimp. I asked for medium rare and it was perfect! Some of the other guys got lobster tail or fish filet and it all looked delicious.
If I’m in the area again I will make a point to stop by again.

Eat here a fair amount — usually good — but tonight my veggies were WAY over cooked and the soup tasted like my sons sweaty socks smell– salad had a dressing with too much horseradish — waitress seemed unhappy to be there — always have a good meal here something was wrong tonight!

Umi is always quite good, dine in or carry out. I can’t speak for the sushi, but I love the chicken fried rice with yum-​yum sauce. The rice is quite flavorful, both sweet and salty, and the chicken is good and not stringy or fatty. I wish it were a little bit more tender, but that can be hard to achieve with such small, thin strips of meat. Umi is always good about catering to special requests (e.g. «No onions») and the service is fast and polite. The hibachi is always entertaining.

Good food but pricey. I always go for the hibachi just for the fun of it. When the place first opened the chefs were great; very entertaining and engaging. Recently though, the chefs seem to lack energy and are bored with the same old routine. Go for the food and don’t expect much of a show.

Food is always delicious! I always get the chicken fried rice and my friend that always goes with me get the steak hibachi. Both are great! Service is always fast, and I’ve been so many times that the servers remember my order (I probably shouldn’t admit that). It’s a great place with a great atmosphere, and the sushi is great as well! My favorite server is Zach

When I want good sushi or hibachi, I definitely choose Umi’s. They’re located on Hwy12 next to the Lost Pizza. The inside is nice and has a hibachi side and regular seating.
Even on a friday night you will only wait about 15 minutes, which really isn’t bad at all. The wait staff have always been lovely and very attentive. I think one time our server brought us the wrong drinks so she gave us a free appetizer. They definitely take service seriously.
I can’t remember what all is in it, but I usually choose one of the bento boxes. They are so yum and my eyes are always bigger than my stomach so I’m not usually able to finish it!

I always enjoy coming to umi. They have a wide variety of sushi rolls so you’re sure to find one with a protein suitable for you. The entrees are reasonably priced but getting the hibachi will add 3 – 5 $ per entrée. The hibachi is a good experience for a time or two but other than that, I’d save several dollars and go out in the dining room.

Your typical hibachi restaurant! Over here in Cali they come a dime a dozen but in Starkville this is the only one, at least that’s what I was told back in July 2012. Good food & entertaining on the hibachi side

I have been here a few times, the food has always been very good as has the service. They have a decent beer selection and a good wine selection that is relatively affordable.
Good place to take a date, or of you just want to go out for a decent dinner and it won’t break the bank.

The sushi here was surprisingly good considering it’s in a small Alabama town. There were a good amount that didn’t have it smothered in cream cheese, mayo or tempura flakes (which I think distracts from the other more authentic flavors), A few of the rolls were also very cheaply priced. Didn’t see much in terms of the specials of the day for rare sashimi items, but I wouldn’t be afraid to recommend this place if you’re craving some pretty tasty sushi.

I have been to many Hibachi places and this is one the best yet. The chef was very entertaining, server was prompt and the food was delicious! So glad we choose Umi to have dinner!

I went there with a co-​worker, and we opted the hibachi over the sushi. I have only had hibachi once before so I can only compare it to that, and it was so-​so. I had the chicken and shrimp meal. The rice was very mushy when the chef had finished cooking it, the vegetables kinda tasted like grease, but the meat was flavored and cooked perfectly. I definitely want to go back and try the sushi for sure.

Great place to eat at. Ordered 2 boats full of sushi rolls and it was really good. The sushi chef also gave in a complimentary roll. The manager also bought us a round of sake when we were taking sake bombs. Overall, if you want to have a good time in a great environment then I highly recommend this place.

Sushi are great. But prefere different texture in different rolls. Love their shrimp tempura. Tempura udon soup. Shrimp dumplings are great but had a lot better one in bigger cities. Lunch menu is a little bit expensive for me consider the quantities and qualities. Atmosphere is gorgeous. Habachi food is pretty plain but I guess it’s fun to watch.
They have a lot of sushi chef so compare to other sushi bar in town, umi is pretty fast if u order sushi.
Recommend it for nice date.

One of my favorite restaurants in Starkville. They have great Merry rolls. All the food is incredibly fresh and the hibachi is fun. My husband and I do the add-​a-​plate every time and always end up with too much food anyway. Best clear soup.
Don’t order the squid salad if you’re used to the raw kind. Tried the Unagi too and wasn’t thrilled, I’m normally a huge fan. They need to add mango with it (sounds weird but tastes awesome).
The ginger dressing is super fresh and tasty. Order it light though, sometimes it comes a little heavy.
The Sake is awesome. ALWAYS order it and never disappointed.

As a couple people here have noted, make sure you go to their new location, in the shopping center on Hwy 12 & Louisville (near Sportsplex). They’ve got a really nice new, elegant location, and they keep pretty late hours — always a plus in a college town!
They have a huge selection of specialty sushi rolls (my favorite so far is the alligator roll), as well as sashimi and bento boxes. However, if you are a vegetarian, I would personally recommend Sushi on Main instead of Umi because they have more veggie friendly options.

This place is awesome. We’ve come here on many occasions, often with a group of up to 15 – 20, and have never left unhappy. The owner has often treated us to a round or appetizers on the house, and the service is generally very good.
I’m hesitant to leave any restaurant 5 stars, but for this area (Columbus-​Starkville) you won’t find a better sushi/​hibachi place. The hibachi is entertaining and very good in general, and the white sauce is amazing (I always ask for two dishes of it).
As you can tell, umi is one of my favorite restaurants in this area. Definitely would recommend it to a couple or a group of 15 (sake bombs!).
