I don’t like to spend a lot of money on my clothing. I’ll be honest with you. I’m currently wearing pajama pants from Costco and a shirt I bought from a resale shop. It’s all about the Hamiltons, baby. I’m not a fashionista, and despite occasionally shopping at T.J. Maxx, I wouldn’t even call myself a Maxxinista. I’m more of a thriftinista. I might not keep up with the latest trends, but I make my clothing purchases at the corner of Cute and Reasonably Priced. Unfortunately, Upscale Resale is not located at that address. The word upscale means«toward or relating to the more expensive or affluent sector of the market.» I really could not care less about wearing designer clothes, but when I go to a resale or consignment shop with a designer section or to one that purportedly focuses on high-end items, I expect to see some nice pieces at decent prices. I’m not expecting Goodwill prices, just good prices. If you look at the pictures posted in 2012, you’ll see what appears to be a shop that sells fun, trendy, and perhaps«upscale» clothing. That was what I was expecting during my recent visit to Upscale Resale, but that was not how I’d describe the store I visited. The majority of the clothing seemed dated. Yes, I know this is a resale shop. As Paige pointed out, you probably won’t find the«hottest, hippest» things here – or at any store of this type, for that matter. Let me try a different adjective. The majority of the clothing seemed. .. mature. I’m 32, which probably seems ancient to those under 20, and even I felt too young to be shopping here. After browsing my first rack of clothes and not finding a single thing I liked, I began to notice the prices. Holy F. The price was the only upscale thing about some of the clothing. I wouldn’t pay the asking price for some of their items even if the items were new. For some pieces, I had to take a second look at the price tag. Is this an unworn item being sold with its original price tag? No, that’s really what they’re asking for it. I know I said most of the items were«mature,» but the final straw for me was a Decree t-shirt being sold for $ 12. Decree is a juniors’ brand, and that shirt probably was $ 12 when it was new at JCPenney. The only reason I’m giving them two stars is because the lady at the counter was pleasant and helpful. But something’s gotta give here. Nicer clothing needs to be sold at the current prices, or the prices need to drop. I’m not trying to discourage you from checking them out. Please, by all means, pay them a visit. Let me know if something has changed.

I’ve been to Upscale Resale at least a couple of times since this designer consignment shop opened, but it’s been continuously disappointing. While I understand that’s it’s consignment(and therefore, not the hottest, hippest thing right now), Upscale Resales doesn’t seem to. For one thing, they’ve taken some items that make wonder when they were ever in fashion(seriously, some of the stuff is just hideous and wasn’t a good idea in any era). Another thing is the prices: they’re just not that great of a deal. Yes, something might be discounted, but it’s not a steep one. And a lot of times, I could pay the same for a brand new, on trend item in a regular store instead of this previously worn, out of fashion now, and generally not so great consignment item. I mean, you’re a consignment shop Upscale Resale! I know you didn’t pay $ 200 for that Chrome Hearts leather skirt form its owner, so don’t try to charge me $ 200 for it. Seriously. And my final beef: the term«upscale» is used quite loosely. I’ve seen labels that barely qualify like Ann Taylor, The Limited and New York & Co. Really? Those are upscale? No, no, no. I think we need to reevaluate and get a wee bit more picky about what qualifies and what doesn’t. Frankly, Upscale Resale is not usually going to yield many results. Their prices have inched up over time and the pickings have inched down.

Disclaimer: I’m writing this review from the viewpoint of a consigner, not as a shopper. I have consigned a lot of nice, designer items at several consignment shops in the St. Louis area. I have never experienced such attitude or been treated so rudely by an employee of a consignment shop in my entire life. I understand that they operate a business based upon the quality of the items brought into their stores, but assuming that everything that walks through the door is complete crap is the antithesis of how a consignment store should operate. I was lectured on the rules of consigning and I was told the array of rules that I had already broken even though I’d never consigned there before. Annoying. The woman who evaluated the items that I wished to consign acted like I was creating a problem for her by bringing in my items. Oh, I’m sorry, I guess you don’t want or need very nice, high end, designer items in your store. It’s not like you turn around and try and sell them or anything…

I stopped by here while I was in the area the other day and I really liked this store. The staff was friendly and they had a pretty good selection and everything was in very good condition. Some of the clothes they had looked like they hadn’t even been worn. I found some 7 jeans on sale for a pretty good price. I was curious about the consignment policy and found out that they are non profit. 50% goes to the consignor and 50% goes to Willow’s Way. I would recommend checking them out and if you have some nice things to sell, I would put this place at the top of my list.
