Sappington Garden Shop

I like going here because I’m an avid gardener and bird lover, for one reason, but also because I grew up so close to it and I’m kind of nostalgic about that stretch of Gravois, near Sappington. It’s on or close to the site where a tiny farmers market had been that had one aisle which spiraled inward to the center where the cash register was. And it’s close enough to Kirkwood, where I live now. I don’t go here frequently, but at least a couple of times a year.
Anyway, I go to many nurseries and plant stores every spring, and SGS is one of them. It’s great for gardeners as well as bird and nature lovers. Lots of garden décor items and items for birds, such as houses, nesting boxes and feeders. Lots of religious/​christian décor items inside in the gift shop, too, if that’s your cup of tea. Parking is aplenty and easy.
Sappington Garden Shop has good plant stock and it always feels like enough selection to me. And it’s not overwhelmingly large, which is a plus, to me. They have a good selection of native perennials, as well as shrubs and trees and vegetables and annuals. Various mulches and rock mulch are available in bags as well, with prices posted clearly on a large sign board. Prices seem fair. I purchased a very nice small clematis late in the season last year for a mere 6.00, and it’s going gang-​busters this season.
I also have received good help from staff who seem to know the products well. For example, I had questions about amending clay soil, and the young man who assisted me explained what products would be best and why. It was really helpful. so, yes, I’m a fan:)

Such a strange, quirky place. They have a garden shop with the normal plants you can buy anywhere-​nothing special. Do go inside, they have a gift shop. You will find odd Christmas ornaments and decorations. You will find yourself wondering where the heck they ordered this stuff. Not that its bad, just different. I just purchased some weird ornaments for Xmas gifts. They have many other items for the home. There is also a green house in the basement level. That too I found a bit unusual. Hey, if you are looking for a big cement statue to put in your yard, or perhaps a gigantic fountain, this is the place for you. Well, if you don’t feel like leaving South County to get one anyway.
Every summer when my mom starts her garden up again, I end up at Sappington lugging the mulch for her and piling the boxes of perenials into the trunk of my car. (the joy of not having any sons and being the high school jock of the three girls… awesome). They really do have a great selection here, and everyone that works here is super nice. And if you get a plant home and it dies on the spot, they are great about replacing them, or sometimes just helping you nurse it back.
