His appearance was unassuming as he slipped into our high school’s 10 year reunion(full disclosure: Mike and I went to the same local high school, but aren’t acquainted beyond name recognition). The craft takes very little equipment, so Mike travels with little more than a small briefcase filled mostly with balloons. Setting the case down on the edge of a table, he struck up a conversation and I turned to continue catching up with some others. Perhaps half an hour went by and I noticed a 2′ or 3′ balloon monkey, climbing a balloon palm tree, with balloon bananas, being carried around the room. Then, a balloon Spiderman(…with a balloon web) appeared. After that came a balloon Cookie Monster(complete with a balloon chocolate chip cookie in one hand). A balloon Cardinals player. A balloon Mario… As the night went on, a host of animals, aliens and other sculptures appeared. Most were completely kid-friendly, but the repertoire included a few adult-themed items too including balloon steins overflowing with balloon suds. Watching him twist, break and sculpt, creating with only balloons and a marker, is entertaining and the results are unique, whimsical and fun. It’s low-key and immensely impressive at the same time. Who wouldn’t be entertained? Note: The business also goes by the name Way Cool Balloons and makes regular appearances around town.
