Yum! My risotto last weekend was one of the best risottos I have had. The wait staff was great, atmosphere was perfect for an enjoyable, full conversation with friends and the beer selection was local mixed with unique imports — just the way I like it! The dessert we ordered to share, lemon sponge cake with fresh blueberries, was the size of a Hostess Donette and had about the same disappointing taste for $ 8. For how magnificent the risotto was I can overlook the dessert epic fail!

Came here while in St. Louis, and had some deeeelish gnocchi. Soft, pillowy, and topped with just the right amount of cheese. It was an excellent choice. Its a small and cozy restaurant, with knowledgeable staff. The only thing that kept me from rating this higher was the price point, which was honestly a little steep and I think that the $$ rating on Unilocal was a little off. I see now that it has closed which is a bit of a shame as it was quite tasty but not exactly economical for me.

Really disappointed with menu less Monday. They got our orders confused with other diners, and completely disregarded our preferences. The chef was rude and patronizing when we stated that our food was incorrect. They brought out the wrong wine pairings with all of our courses. For how expensive it was, I was really unsatisfied.

The food here was wonderful. Reservations are recommended but we sat at the bar by choice. All very fresh ingredients… Watching the bartenders make drinks from fresh fruit juices obviously fresh-made. The coffee is great — try the vanilla sugar! I had the hash and Adam had the poached eggs with crab; both were heavenly. They have done a good job transforming this little storefront space to a warm and cozy interior. The service was GREAT, too. Everyone was very nice and personable but still professional. Sitting at the bar I could hear the manager dictating who to seat first and what tables needed what and supporting the staff, which I liked to see. I will definitely come back and bring friends!

Cute place with an intimate atmosphere and good service, but overpriced for what we got. Stopped in after browsing the art fair outside of the Schlafley taproom. My $ 8 warm seasonal vegetable salad consisted of only arugula and some pieces of slightly cooked carrots. I was hoping for more vegetables in a vegetable salad. Veal meatballs were dense and dry although the tomato sauce over creamy polenta were delicious. Chocolate panna cotta had a strange watery consistency and lacked in flavor. Left full, but not satisfied

We were super excited to try No Menu Monday and did last night. After describing our love for veggies and heat, and our dislike for fried or creamy sauce, you can imagine we were shocked when my fiancées first dish was fried rice balls in a white sauce. My main entrée had a bland bean purée and he had fried potatoes. No vegetable was served all night and no spice. Bummer. Service was great. Wine recommendation and wine price was good.

This place. So, you’re going to look at most of these reviews and feel like this place must be pretty good. Which is exactly what we did when we found ourselves in Maplewood and hungry. But. An $ 8 «vegetable» salad consisted of arugula and carrots(barely heated up and basically raw) with an über salty brown butter«dressing». And it was on a side salad plate. Not good. We continued to the veal meatballs which were completely dried out and dense. They didn’t even really taste like veal — you expect a little gaminess with some sort of aggressive spice. We got nothing. The polenta on the plate and the sauce was pretty good though(and it’s a lot of food, definitely shareable if the meatballs themselves were better). Then, it was on to dessert. We love dessert. Especially panna cotta. And even more if it’s chocolate. Which is what was advertised. What we got though? Some sort of watery, jello-y concoction … I wish I would have taken video. It was so weird. Like it was made from a box with water instead of cream, or milk even. Tasteless and boring. And damn, expensive to boot. I can’t imagine a scenario where I would want to go back here — unless I just wanted to sit down for a while with a glass of wine, cause it is a nice looking place with nice people working there and what appears to be a good, extensive wine list(we did not partake). Just, the food. Yikes.

Great brunch and even greater wine selection! All the wines bottles and glasses are a set rate… so there’s no using prices to decide which wine to order! Food is delicious as well! The burgers are AWESOME! Love this place, another hidden gem in Maplewood. :)

This review is a hard one for me because I really do love the food and atmosphere of this place and have previously recommended to several friends. Unfortunately, when we went recently it was for our anniversary and it happened to fall on the hottest day of 2014 in St. Louis. The place was a sauna. I could barely concentrate on our date and the tasty food because I was so unbelievably uncomfortable. Alex and I took breaks from the meal by washing our hands in the bathrooms which seemed to have a working air vent. We opted for the four course dinner and by the end of our entrees alerted our server we would not be staying for dessert because we needed air conditioning. I felt like such a jerk but we both agreed we couldn’t sit in the restaurant any longer. On a positive note, the warm vegetable salad tasted delicious with chopped asparagus, red onion and zucchini over greens. If it had been a November evening I would have enjoyed it even more since I presume it would be colder. The lardo appetizer was a miss for us. Too much oil on an already fatty protein but the black pepper soda bread was delightful. I wanted more this morning for breakfast. It was dense and salty and came served with cultured butter. Both the entrees tasted excellent but again would have been better served in colder temps as the dishes were hearty. Alex had the ancho and tequila pork loin, yum, and I had braised short ribs with cheesy polenta, double yum. The food overall was tasty but maybe better suited for colder weather as everything seemed hearty and heavy. I really do like this place but think they have drastic improvements to make in air circulation before I can revisit. Otherwise, I may just need to dine at Home during the holidays!

We came in on 7⁄28 for their no menu Monday and had such a wonderful evening! This was so much fun and a change of pace from our usual dining experience. The food was great and our server was nice and helpful. Most are familiar with this concept, but essentially your server gets info on what you like, hate, make at home and if you like pork belly. We were clear on these items — I love pork belly whereas my wife isn’t as fond. First course was a braised belly of wild boar and wife had seated scallops. These dishes were awesome — even the wife who never gravitates toward pork belly loved my first course! Her scallops were excellent as well. Entre course was brazier beef shoulder with roasted carrots potatoes and a pepper cream sauce for myself and yellow tomato risotto for the wife. My heart sank a little bit getting this as I just smoked 14 lbs of pork shoulder a few days earlier however as soon as I dug in, I was relieved and overjoyed as it was unique from my BBQ preparation of the other shoulder. Desert was a cherry cola came for me and a popcorn custard for her. Both very good in my opinion but wife didn’t care for the custard. A bit soupy so I can understand. Overall experience was excellent and food was great too. Only letdown(rationale for 4* i.o. 5*) was that when making my reservation, I mentioned to the woman that we would be in on my wife’s birthday and she assured me they would do something special for it but no mention of even a happy birthday occurred. Have had a lot of really special treatments at restaurants when celebrating birthdays so was a little bummed on this. Aside from this, everything else was superb!

Uh… yum. And support friendly staff during lunchtime. Not many places in town compare to Harvest or 1111 in our book. HWK fits the bill and the décor is just awesome to boot. Prices are up there though so don’t expect a free lunch.

I really mean this to be 3.5 stars. To make it short and sweet: we came for brunch. The service was fantastic. The watermelon mimosa was delicious, but the bloody mary was pretty disappointing: it was watery and didn’t feel like it has enough substance/flavor. The steak and eggs was great — medium rare steak perfectly cooked. The shrimp and grits looked awfully greasy. But the real problem was everything was REALLY salty!

Absolutely everything people raved about, and probably one of the best STL dining options. No Menu Monday is a steal. The restaurant is relatively small, but it’s comfortable and homey. We were presented with three courses: Appetizer: Flank steak salad– medium rare, tender, filling for an appetizer, with frisee and fresh figs Chicken and arugula– thigh meat, tender, well seasoned Entrees: Fish with haricot verts and an orange butter topping Huge portion of pork with mashed potatoes Sorry the entrée description is vague, maybe I should have written it down… The entrees were both demolished anyway Dessert: Doughnuts Marscapone cheese, fresh figs, and chocolate These desserts actually complemented each other quite nicely. Share and mix. Came here for a dining experience, and they certainly exceeded expectations. I’ll be back another Monday.

Food(3⁄5) For the 2012 St Louis restaurant of the year, I found the food pretty disappointing. Saturated with salt, I could barely discern the flavors within the duck confit other than salt. My friends found their potatoes and pork chop charred, and completely burnt. The chicken with pumpkin mash was the favorite in the group. The portions were all larger than typical fancy fare, however for the price the quality and quantity was inadequate. Ambiance(4⁄5) The restaurant is cozy, small, dark with a lazy hipster feel that matches the vibe of the street with quirky shops of typewriter stores and other vintage goods. A huge chalkboard flanks the wall behind the bar. It seats about 35 people. It is a clean space, with quirkily decorated bathroom(brother=M and sister=F) Service(4⁄5) We were the first ones who came into the restaurant, yet an hour later we STILL didn’t have our food! After a complaint to our server, we were given an apology and we accepted their maple cake– which was delish. If not for this peace offering, the service points would probably be a 3. I would be interested in giving this restaurant a second chance for their menu-less Mondays, but otherwise much improvement is desired.

One of the better kept secrets in St. Louis if you ask me. We found this place through Unilocal( Unilocal comes through again in the clutch). Looking for a burger place, we found it on Unilocal and wandered in asking them about burgers and what options they offered. They promised us that we wouldn’t be disappointed if we came in and ate there. By far one of the top 2 burgers I’ve ever had at any restaurant in any city, but they have so much more. I’m definitely going to come back one day to try the No menu Monday.
