So I’m typing this as a frustrated, tired, red-eyed Stephanie, so bear with me. It’s 2:55AM, and I should be sleeping, but I’m a firm believer in Unilocaling soon after an experience with a restaurant, business, etc. Anyway, after a night out at the casino, I returned to my residence. I’ve been having some problems getting in due to the cold weather screwing with the lock on the door, but I had managed thus far. Until tonight. I couldn’t for the life of me get the door open. I fiddled with the key in the door for over 5 minutes, and I guess my little key had had enough, because it snapped off in the door. Shit. I was cold, tired, and it was 1:45AM. I called AAA. They do home lockouts, but only at the Platinum level(I was one level below that). Fuckers. Desperate, I called the first locksmith my iPhone pulled up. ‘A Master Locksmith’. Hmm. I called, and they promised to send a tech out within 20 minutes. Well, 35 minutes later, someone showed up. In an unmarked vehicle. Nice. I’m a young woman, it’s after 2AM, I’m by myself, and you send a young male tech over to my condo in an UNMARKED vehicle. This could have been the beginning of a tragic event. But then again, maybe I watch too much Dateline. Anyway, the guy was nice enough, and told me it would be $ 75 to get me in, plus a $ 35 charge just for him to come out. $ 110 total. Well, damn. Having NO past experience with locksmiths, I didn’t know if this was standard or not, but what was I going to do? It was 2:30AM, I was dead tired, and I needed to get into my house. I didn’t really have time to call around and price check. Cut me some slack, here! After 15 minutes worth of fiddling(and me holding my breath the entire time), he got the door open. Of course, this didn’t solve my problem of having my key stuck in the lock(I wasn’t going to pay another $ 95 for him to replace my locks when I can do it myself for the cost of a new lock from Home Depot*), but at least I was in. I did pretty well at the casino, so I happened to have the $ 110 he was charging me in cash. They do accept checks and credit cards, FYI. Typically I would rate this experience as 4 stars, but I just can’t. I don’t know if I was overcharged or not. The tech arrived well after the estimated 20 minute timeframe(if you look at their website, they actually guarantee a 15 minute timeframe). He came in an unmarked vehicle. If I find out that my charge was typical, I might bump this up to a 4 star rating. I’m just happy to be home. *by ‘do it MYSELF’, I really mean that I’m going to have my boyfriend do it, but who’s keeping track?
